The Saint John Sea Dogs were apparently very busy yesterday prior to the 1:00 pm roster submission deadline.Director of Hockey Operations Mike Kelly announced today on saintjohnseadogs.com several roster moves including one call-up and affiliate player movement.
The biggest move was the call-up of Sea Dogs 2009 second round draft pick Aiden Kelly from the Saint John Vito’s. The local player has played in five games with the Sea Dogs this season and has yet to register a point. He was recently called up over the holidays to help fill the void for Jonathan Huberdeau and a suspended Mike Thomas left.
To make room for Kelly, the Dogs demoted the recently called up Will Johnston. He joined the club last Wednesday and played his first and only game Friday against Cape Breton. He made an instant impression on the team when he took down Kalin Paul in an epic tilt.
Johnston returns to the MJAHL’s Summerside Western Capitals as a Sea Dog affiliate player.
Forwards Chuckie Shembri (Dieppe Commandos, MJAHL), Jason Gallant (Summerside Western Capitals), and defenseman Martin Joyal (Collège Antoine-Girouard Gaulois, QCMAAA) and Jordan Thomas (Halifax Lions, MJAHL) were all added to the Sea Dogs 50-man roster today.
The most interesting is the addition of Chuckie Shembri. The 19-year-old has only played six games in the QMJHL and has only point in those games.
He recently participated in the Halifax Mooseheads’ training camp after a stint with the Moncton Wildcats. That’s when things went a wrong.
On September 16 of this year, Shembri was sent home by the Mooseheads for disciplinary reasons. It was later revealed that it was due to incident on a road trip to Cape Breton.
"I was treated fairly," Schembri said to Metro Halifax. "I made a mistake that at that level you just can't do. And being 19, I don't get second chances. It's too bad I didn't really even get a chance to prove anything on the ice. But that is no one's fault but my own and I have only great things to say about the coaching staff and the organization."
In other roster moves, Vincent Fournier and Robert McEwan have been released of their rights as a Sea Dog affiliate.
McEwan has played in 37 career games with Saint John over the last two seasons. He has only two assists in that span along with 35 penalty minutes.
The 18-year-old is an Ontario native and could go back home to join an Ontario Hockey League team.
Hey, love the blog. Just wanted to point out that Galiev is not projected to go in the first round. He is 23rd in North American skaters. This is a draft with some great goalies, as well as European skaters. He is more likely to go around 35-45. Keep up the good work.
