Charlie Coyle Coming To Saint John?

Has Christmas come early for the Saint John Sea Dogs?

Just days before the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League trade deadline opens, reports are saying that the Sea Dogs may have a landed a big time American forward.

According to CollegeHockeyNews.com, “Charlie Coyle has left Boston University and will likely sign with the Saint John Sea Dogs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, according to U.S. Hockey Report. The article says Coyle's departure is ‘supposedly due to academic issues.’”

A number of other legit news sources on Twitter are reporting the same thing.

Sources told College Hockey News on Thursday that Coyle has had ongoing academic issues and was in danger of being ruled academically ineligible for the second semester. The sources offered conflicting reports over whether or not Coyle was leaving, however. Some said nothing had been decided yet. One source indicated that all parties involved were hoping to wait until after the World Junior Championship to announce anything.

Boston Hockey Blog tweeted, “just spoke to Charlie Coyle via phone. Said as of right now he's still with #BU. ‘That's all I can say right now,’ he said.”

The Hockey News' Ryan Kennedy tweeted, "I just talked to Minnesota GM Chuck Fletcher about Charlie Coyle leaving BU: 'I'm aware of the speculation. I've heard nothing first-hand.'"

Coyle, 19, is on his way to Alberta to take part in Team USA’s world junior camp which begins tomorrow. The USA’s final roster for the tournament will be named on December 22.

A first round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2010 National Hockey League Entry Draft but later had his rights traded to the Minnesota Wild, he is tied for third in BU scoring with three goals and 11 assist for 14 points. He was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year last season.
