POSTSCRIPT: Eagles 1, Sea Dogs 9

A collection of recaps from yesterday’s 9-1 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles…

Our recap. A six-goal second period propelled the Saint John Sea Dogs past the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in front of a packed house at Harbour Station on Sunday afternoon.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Ryan Tesink had a goal and three assists, Maxime Villemaire scored twice and added a helper and Jonathan Huberdeau also tallied a pair as the Dogs rode a six-goal second-period to the win.

MISSING IN ACTION: Forward Devon Oliver-Dares missed the game due to a broken collarbone while Ian Saab was out with a minor lower body injury, according to News 88.9. Forward Jason Cameron was a healthy scratch.

STREAK: The Sea Dogs extended their winning streak to 14 games with the victory. It is the longest streak in the Canadian Hockey League this season. They have not lost since January 12.

SECEOND PERIOD: The Sea Dogs exploded in the second period on Sunday, scoring six goals to lead 7-0 after 40 minutes. The Dogs outshot the Eagles 20-5 in the frame.

VS CB: Saint John improved to 5-1-0-0 against Cape Breton with the victory. They two will meet two more times this season as the Dogs travel to Sydney to play the Eagles on March 16 and 17. It will be the final two games of the regular season for both clubs.

HUBERDEAU: With two goals in yesterday’s game, Jonathan Huberdeau now has 22 markers and 36 assists in just 29 games this year. He is averaging two points per game.

In his past eight games, Huberdeau has 10 goals and 10 assists.

VILLEMAIRE: Maxime Villemaire also had a pair of goals on Sunday, giving him seven goals in 10 games with Saint John. Five of Villemaire’s seven goals have come at Harbour Station.

THE BLUES: Solid game for two St. Louis Blues prospects. Both Ryan Tesink and Stephen MacAulay recorded three assists in the game. Tesink also had a goal.

Since returning from injury on January 26, Tesink has two goals and six assists in eight games. He has 10 goals and 23 helpers in 28 matches this season.

COYLE: Charlie Coyle had a big game, recording a goal and two assists. He now has 11 goals and 23 points in 15 games with Saint John.

AUGER: Cape Breton fired just 16 shots on net, making life pretty easy for Sebastien Auger. The backup goaltender improved to 12-2-0-2 with the victory to go with a 2.88 goals against average and a 0.888 save percentage.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs have a one-point lead on the Shawinigan Cataractes for first overall in the league and have a game in hand. The Dogs, who have 90 points, still have eight games to play while the Cataractes have 89 with seven games remaining.

89: The win gave Saint John 90 points on the season. It is the fourth time in five years that the Sea Dogs have gotten 89 points or more.

NOTES: Sell-out crowd of 6,488 watched the game… this was the first of four straight home games for Saint John… Jonathan Huberdeau had a Sea Dogs high seven shots… Stephen MacAulay, Kevin Gagne, and Aidan Kelly were the only Sea Dogs without shots… Denis Kindl had three shots for the Eagles… Kyle Campbell had four hits… Cory MacIntosh, Denis Kindl, Dany Potvin, and Jean-Simon Deslauriers were all a -4… Kelly and Grant West were the only Saint John players without a plus rating. They each had a zero rating… Cole Murphy, Bronson Beaton, and Blake Millman all had a zero rating, making them the only Cape Breton players without minus ratings.

NEXT GAME: The Dogs take on the Moncton Wildcats on Tuesday night at 7pm at Harbour Station. It is the final Rivalry Cup match of the year.
