Jack Parker Isn't Impressed

Boston University head coach Jack Parker isn’t exactly Charlie Coyle’s biggest fan.

On the Daily Free Press’ hockey blog, Parker seemed less than impressed with Coyle’s performance in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League thus far. The 19-year old had 14 points with BU in 16 games before departing. Since joining the Sea Dogs, he has recorded 24 in 16 contests.

"The quality of play can be shown by somebody that you see come here and barely gets a point and then he goes up there and gets 20," Parker said Thursday. "It’s a lot easier and it’s not as good a competition. Charlie was an 18-year-old as a freshman and a 19-year-old here and playing 22-, 23-, 24- and sometimes 25-year-olds. Now he is a 19-year-old playing against 17-year-olds. There is no way that’s as good for him. But it looks better on his stat sheet."

Parker added that, "unless you’re real dumb or you don’t want to go to school at all and want nothing to do with school, or you're an 18 year-old phenom that is going to be in the NHL at 19, college hockey is the way to go.”

The coach also said that he hasn’t kept in touch with Coyle at all and “would presume he would be able to score easier in that league against 16- or 17-year-olds.”  Check out the full blog post for more.

Coyle, who turns 20 on Friday, signed a three-year, entry level contract with the Minnesota Wild today and is expected to turn pro next year.

Judging by some of the comments we’ve seen on the interweb, a lot of Terriers fans basically feel the same way as Parker. There's been a whole lot of drama at BU this year.

If there’s anything we are completely sick of, it’s the NCAA vs CHL debate. We enjoy both products. So let’s leave it at that.

  2. Wow. It's well known that Major Junior hockey better prepares you for the rigours of the NHL schedule than college hockey. And this is coming from a Minnesota Gophers fanatic. Love watching college hockey, but major junior is much better.

  3. if coyle isnt so good then how is he a 1st round draft pick, an i would love to see these college boys play the dogs. take a look at how many kids make the NHL out of CHL vs. NCAA, Chl way above the Q has gotten better. Just a typical coach whos sour that his star has left to play with the best kids in the world. GDG
