Two Dogs Prospects Among MHL's Best

A couple of Saint John Sea Dogs prospects have been honoured by the Maritime Junior Hockey League. Forward Colin Campbell was named a 1st Team All-Star while forward Stephen Anderson was named Rookie of the Year.

Campbell led the Yarmouth Mariners in scoring this season with 83 points in 48 games. He also had a team high 50 assists. Campbell’s 83 points placed him second in the league scoring race, just four behind league leader Mike Szmatula.

Campbell, a ninth round pick of the Sea Dogs in 2010, played in six games with Saint John this season, registering two assists, four penalty minutes, and a -4 rating.

The Mariners finished first in the Bent Division with a record of 35-14-1-2. They’ll face the winner of a mini-series between the Weeks Crushers and the Metro Marauders in the opening round of the playoffs.

Anderson took Rookie of the Year honours after recording 19 goals and 17 assists in 31 games this season. His 36 points placed him third in Summerside Western Capitals scoring. He was also solid offensively in the 26 games he played with the Sea Dogs, scoring six times and adding 10 helpers.

“Stephen Anderson is mature beyond his years and was a great surprise to us this season”, said Capitals head coach Billy McGuigan in a MHL release.

“Stephen is a player that can play a skill game or can play a very physical style when needed. He has extremely quick hands and a very quick cross over that makes him very hard to defend.  He never backs down from a challenge and wins puck battles and makes room for himself and his teammates.

“He’s a very tough kid that stands up for teammates and himself”.

The Charlottetown native was selected  by Saint John in the sixth round of last year’s QMJHL Entry Draft.

Summerside finished second in the Meek Division behind the powerhouse Woodstock Slammers with a 26-21-1-4 record. They’ll face the Dieppe Commandos in the opening round of the playoffs.
