CHARLOTTETOWN – Everything was going pretty well for the Saint
John Sea Dogs. Then Saturday’s game happened.
The Sea Dogs, coming off a hard fought 4-3 loss to the
Halifax Mooseheads on home ice the night before, were throttled by the Herd.
Saint John fired just 17 shots on goal in the 11-2 loss. Halifax led 4-0 after
one and 7-0 after two.
Nothing went right for the Sea Dogs on Saturday. Tonight,
they will try to get the train back on the tracks when they face the PEI Islanders
Rocket at 7pm at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
The Rocket are off to a solid start this season,
currently sitting sixth overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with a
5-2-0-0 record. They’ve outscored opponents 30-25 and are coming off
back-to-back road wins.
PEI is led by veterans Josh Currie and Ben Duffy who each
have 12 points. Currie leads the squad in goals with eight while Duffy leads
the team in assists with nine.
The Sea Dogs are coming off back-to-back loses. They
currently sit 10th overall in the league with a 4-3-0-0 record. They’ve
allowed 15 goals over the past two games and have been outscored 24-21 on the
season.
Jonathan Huberdeau leads the Dogs in scoring with 12
points in seven games. Rocket head coach Gordie Dwyer told The Guardian newspaper today that the Florida Panthers prospect is “the best player in our
league.”
PEI and Saint John have not met yet this season but they
did meet twice during the pre-season. Each team won one game apiece.
This is the first game of a busy stretch for Saint John.
They host Rouyn-Noranda and Val-d’Or on the weekend before hitting the road for
Quebec where they will play three games in four nights beginning next Wednesday
in Quebec City.

LAST GAMES
The Sea Dogs are coming off a disastrous 11-2 loss in
Halifax on Saturday night. Jonathan Huberdeau scored both Saint John goals.
Sebastien Auger was pulled after the first period, allowing four goals on 12
shots. Alex Fournier played the rest of the game in net, allowing seven goals
on 26 shots.
The Rocket are coming off a 5-4 shootout win over the
Phoenix in Sherbrooke on Sunday. Jimmy Oligny, Victor Provencher, Matej Beran,
and Alexis Pepin scored for PEI in regulation time. Pepin and Ben Duffy each scored in the
shootout. Maxime Lagace allowed four goals on 17 shots before getting yanked
and replaced by Antoine Bibeau. Bibeau made 10 saves in relief.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
These teams met twice during the pre-season with each
squad winning one game.
The Sea Dogs went 7-0-0-1 against PEI last season while
the Rocket went 1-7-0-0 against Saint John.
Their last regular season meeting was on March 2 at Harbour Station when
the Rocket fired just 15 shots on net in an 8-1 loss. Jonathan Huberdeau had
four goals, Stephen MacAulay two, and Zack Phillips and Stanislav Galiev each
had one marker. Mathieu Corbeil made 14 saves for the win while Maxime Lagace
allowed eight goals on 41 shots. Louick Marcotte scored PEI’s goal.

- Josh Currie and Huberdeau are third in the league in goals with eight.
