SAINT JOHN – Two struggling teams meet tonight at Harbour
Station.
The Saint John Sea Dogs, losers of four straight, host
the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, who are just 1-8-0-1 in their last 10 games, this evening at 7pm. It’s Toonie Night, meaning all youth upper bowl
tickets are just $2.00 ($1.00 Harbour Station service charge also applies).
The Sea Dogs are coming off a tough weekend where they
faced two of the teams in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, losing 4-2 to
the Quebec Remparts on Saturday and 4-2 to the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday. They
haven’t won a game since a 5-1 victory in Rouyn-Noranda on November 28.
Saint John is currently 14-16-0-0 and sit fifth in the
Telus Maritimes Division and 14th overall in the QMJHL with 28 points.
They are six points ahead of the Screaming Eagles who sit in the division
basement and hold the final playoff spot.
Tonight’s game is the likely beginning of the
post-Huberdeau era. The Sea Dogs captain is in Calgary for Team Canada world
junior selection camp and very likely played his final game with Saint John on
Sunday. The Florida Panthers prospect leads the Dogs in scoring with 45 points,
so his departure obviously leaves a big hole in the lineup. It’ll be
interesting to see who takes his spot on the top line.
Cape Breton has an 8-19-2-4 record heading into action
tonight. They have just one win over their past 10 games and that came on
Sunday in Chicoutimi. Tonight’s game ends a strange three-game road trip that
saw the Eagles play in Baie-Comeau on Saturday, Chicoutimi on Sunday, and Saint
John this evening.
Alexandre Lavoie leads the Eagles in scoring with 47
points in 33 games. William Carrier is second with 42 points in 32 contests.
This will be the first time the Sea Dogs play the Eagles
since they fired Ron Choules on December 3. They’ve since hired Marc-Andre
Dumont to take over head coaching and general manager duties.

LAST GAMES
The Sea Dogs are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Halifax
Mooseheads on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station. Kevin Gagne and Noah Zilbert
scored for Saint John. Sebastien Auger made 37 saves in the loss.
The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 3-0 victory over
the Sagueneens in Chicoutimi on Sunday. Blake Millman, William Carrier, and
Alexandre Lavoie scored for the Eagles. David Honzik stopped all 31 shots he
faced for the shutout win.
HEAD-TO-HEAD
The Sea Dogs are 2-1-0-0 against the Screaming Eagles this season while Cape Breton is 1-2-0-0 against Saint John.
Their last meeting was on November 24 at Harbour Station
when the Dogs beat the Eagles 4-1. Stephen MacAulay had two goals while singles
came from Jonathan Huberdeau and Kevin Gagne. Jakub Culek scored Cape Breton’s
lone goal. Sebastien Auger made 25 saves in the win. David Honzik made 20 stops
for the Eagles.
