The Saint John Sea Dogs announced this afternoon that
they had traded the 20-year old Cole Harbour native to the first-place Mooseheads
in exchange for a 2013 fourth-round Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft
choice and a 2014 second-round pick.
MacAulay has been with Saint John since the 2008-09
season.
“Stephen MacAulay has represented the Sea Dogs
organization on the ice, the very same way he handles himself off the ice,”
said Sea Dogs head coach and General Manager Mike Kelly. “His selfless nature,
commitment to others and willingness to do anything required of him as long as
it is in the best interest of the team, seems to be instinctive.”
“Everything he gave our organization over the past 3 ½
years is something that will always be appreciated,” Kelly added. “We know
Stephen has a bright future ahead of him and we will certainly miss both him
and his family as we have shared some memorable experiences. We wish Stephen
and his family all the best in the future.”
The two-way forward has played a key role on the Sea Dogs
over the past few seasons, helping the club win three regular season titles,
two President Cups, and a Memorial Cup.
MacAulay was selected by Saint John in the third-round of
the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft. He was also a sixth round pick of the NHL’s St.
Louis Blues in 2010 but never signed with the club. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound
forward turned down a 25-game professional tryout with the AHL’s Hamilton
Bulldogs this past fall.
He has 18 goals and 18 assists in 34 games this season.
Ironically, he recorded three points against the Mooseheads last night in a 3-2
Sea Dogs overtime win.
Halifax’s next game is tomorrow afternoon at 3pm in Charlottetown.
They face the Sea Dogs in Saint John on February 20.
The Moose currently sit first overall in the QMJHL and
are the top-ranked team in the CHL with a 32-3-2-1 record.
