POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 1, Wildcats 6

Our recap. The Moncton Wildcats won the all-important Brunswick News Rivalry Cup on Wednesday night as a sell-out crowd watched the ‘Cats thump the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-1.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without defensemen David Weckworth (healthy) and Michael Abbott (defenseman) along with forward Connor Donaghey on Wednesday night.

PENALTIES: Moncton went 4/11 on the power play last night. Penalties pretty much cost Saint John any chance they had in this game. Ian Saab ended up finishing the game with 14 minutes in penalties, Oliver Cooper had four, and Jurij Repe six.

There were unlimited calls in the second period. Between the two teams there were 16 infractions.

VEILLEUX: The Wildcats were missing Dmitrij Jaskin and Allain Saulnier but it didn’t matter too much on Wednesday night. Yannick Veilleux stepped up, scoring a hat trick and adding an assist as well. He has 34 goals on the season.

POINTS: It was good night offensively for some other Wildcats as well. Christophe Lalonde had two goals and an assist, Alex Saulnier had four assists, and Phillip Danault had three helpers.

PENALTY SHOT: Christophe Lalonde scored on a penalty shot in the second period, giving Moncton a 4-0 lead at the time. It was just the eighth penalty shot goal scored in the league this season. It was also a rare shorthanded penalty shot goal.

MALONE: Former Wildcat Brett Malone scored Saint John’s only goal in the game. It was his fifth of the season and second in 20 games with the Sea Dogs. He played seven games with Moncton earlier this season.

RIVALRY CUP: With a sold-out Coliseum and a win, the Moncton Wildcats clinched their third Rivalry Cup victory and first since 2010. Saint John had won it the past two seasons. Moncton won this year’s season long event 19-17. The full results can be found here.

STREAK: The Wildcats ended a four-game losing streak (0-2-1-1) with the win. Saint John has now lost back-to-back games.

HOME: This was Moncton’s final home game of the regular season. They finished with a solid 26-6-1-1 record and outscored opponents 168-91.

VS WILDCATS: The Sea Dogs lost the Rivalry Cup but they did win the season series. Saint John had a 5-3-0-0 record against Moncton this season while the Wildcats went 3-4-1-0 against the Sea Dogs. This was the final meeting of the regular season between the two.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs are still one-point back of the Sherbrooke Phoenix for 15^th overall. Each team has two games left in the regular season. The Phoenix are in Rouyn-Noranda tomorrow night and Val-d’Or on Saturday. Saint John plays in Halifax tomorrow and in Charlottetown on Sunday.

NOTES: There was a pre-game ceremony to honour Moncton’s three graduating 20-year old players… the faceoff dots at the Moncton Coliseum are Circle K logos. Cool… the Sea Dogs had six shots in each period… only nine of Saint John’s 18 shots were listed as dangerous. Even that might be a bit generous… Phillip Danault had eight shots… Kyle Haas had two hits… the Mill Rats clinched a playoff spot last night.
