MONCTON – The Moncton Wildcats won the all-important
Brunswick News Rivalry Cup on Wednesday night as a sell-out crowd watched the ‘Cats
thump the Saint John Sea Dogs 6-1.
Moncton picked up three points for a regulation win and
another three for a crowd over 6,000, winning their third Rivalry Cup title
19-17 over the Sea Dogs.
As for things that actually mattered in this game, the
Sea Dogs were simply stomped by one of the top teams in the Quebec Major Junior
Hockey League. Even without Allain Saulnier, Dmitrij Jaskin, and Alex Dubeau,
Moncton held control for the majority of Wednesday’s match.
Yannick Veilleux had a hat trick, Christophe Lalonde
netted a pair, and Stephen Johnson added a single for the ‘Cats. With Dubeau
still injured, Cole Holowenko only had to make 17 saves for the win in goal.
Former Wildcat Brett Malone scored Saint John’s only
goal. Sebastien Auger made his usual 40 saves in the loss.
The game got off to a fairly slow start but the first
period would end with Moncton up 3-0. Johnson opened the scoring while Veilleux
scored twice. Despite the lopsided score, shots were only 14-6 in favour of
Moncton.
Lalonde scored on a penalty shot at 3:16 of a penalty
filled second period, giving the ‘Cats a 4-0 advantage. Malone scored on the
power play at 4:44, making it a 4-1 match. Lalonde got that goal back at 14:51
of the frame and Veilleux finished off his hat trick at 3:17 of the third to
make it a 6-1 final.
Final shots were 46-18 in favour of Moncton.
The Wildcats went 4-for-11 (!) on the power play while
the Sea Dogs went 1-for-4.
