The Sea Dogs officially announced this afternoon that
16-year old forward Mathieu Joseph will remain with the club for the remainder
of the season.
Saint John called up Joseph on December 27th
to replace Nathan Noel who was taking part in the World Under-17 Hockey
Challenge. In four games, Joseph had an assist, four shots, and a +3 rating.
Joseph, drafted 51st overall by the Dogs in
the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft, was also impressive
during training camp. He probably would have made the team if not for the
league rule that teams can only carry four 16-year olds, which the Dogs had with
Noel, Samuel Dove-McFalls, Thomas Chabot, and Will Thompson. There is no
mention in the Sea Dogs release on the rule, but like most QMJHL rules, there
is probably a way around it.
"We have been impressed with Mathieu's play since
he's been with us," said Sea Dogs Head Coach and Co-General Manager Ross
Yates. "We believe he will see long-term benefits by gaining valuable
experience with our team for the rest of this year."
Joseph had 11 goals and 36 points in 32 games for the
College Antoine-Girouard Gaulois of the Quebec Midget AAA Hockey League prior
to joining the Sea Dogs.
In other news, the Sea Dogs announced via Twitter that rookie forward
Joey Richard is expected to miss the remainder of the season with a dislocated
shoulder. Richard was hurt last Saturday by Halifax’s Austyn Hardie.
Richard, a third-round pick of Saint John in last year’s
draft, had three goals and two assists in 25 games.
