Sea Dogs Notebook

JURCO
Via the Grand Rapids Griffins YouTube page, here’s Tomas Jurco talking about the Slovakian Olympic team.

THIS WEEKEND
The Sea Dogs have a tough weekend ahead of them with a game in Quebec City tomorrow night and a Sunday afternoon match in Blainville-Boisbriand.

The Remparts sit ninth overall in the league with a 23-11-3-5 record while the Armada sit first overall with a 27-8-4-3 record.

Saint John kicked off their Quebec road trip last night, losing 5-0 in Rimouski. They are 1-11-0-1 against Quebec based teams this season.

MACAULAY
Former Sea Dogs forward Stephen MacAulay is off to a good start with the Saint Mary’s Huskies. In three Atlantic University Sport games, MacAulay has a goal and an assist.

Heading into action tonight the Huskies sit fifth in the AUS men's hockey standings with an 8-9-0 record.

HOFFMAN
Former Sea Dogs forward Mike Hoffman has been named to the 2014 AHL All-Star Team that will compete against Färjestad BK, one of the top professional teams in the Swedish Hockey League, in an internationally televised two-day event including a Skills Competition on Tuesday, Feb. 11 and the All-Star Game on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The event is taking place in St. John’s.

Hoffman has 16 goals and 24 assists in 33 AHL games with the Binghamton Senators. He was held pointless in the three NHL games he has appeared in this season.

#CrowdPricing
This is pretty cool. The Sea Dogs announced today that they will be using #CrowdPricing for their home game on January 21st against Halifax. From the Sea Dogs release:

This promotion is being administered in conjunction with Spinzo Corporation, a Saint John-based company that offers a demand-based pricing option for its customers.
With each ticket purchased through the Spinzo #CrowdPricing offer, the price drops. At the close of the promotion, each person will receive tickets for the final low price.
Lower Bowl seats could drop below $12 per ticket while Upper Bowl seats could dip below $10 per ticket. When purchasing any adult ticket, fans also have the option of buying fixed-price youth tickets for $5.
Visit http://seadogs.spinzo.com to book your seats. Some restrictions apply. See website for details.
Fans will be asked to provide a credit card number at the time of purchase, but the card will only be charged the final, lower price on game day, January 21st.

On a side note, Jonathan Drouin and the Mooseheads only visit Saint John two more times this year.

HARDIE
If you missed it this past week, Halifax’s Austyn Hardie has been suspended four games for his hit on Joey Richard last Saturday at Harbour Station.

The reasoning for the suspension:

  • The opponent was on a two on one.
  • He was in control of the puck on the right side of the ice.
  • At the face off level, he took a shot towards the net.
  • The player at fault skated towards him and gave him a body check at the red goal line.
  • Both players had speed.
  • The goaltender froze the puck and the play was over.
  • The time between the shot and the body check was over the permitted time.
  • Despite the fact that he tried to protect himself and that the hit was to the shoulder, the opponent lost control and fell heavily on the boards.
  • The opponent was injured on the play.
  • This is the first offense for the player at fault.

There is a video explaining the suspension on the QMJHL website.

PHILLIPS
Here’s a nice shootout goal Zack Phillips scored last week.

In 32 games with the AHL’s Iowa Wild this season, Phillips has six goals and nine assists.
