Two ex-Dogs traded in NHL

Two former Saint John Sea Dogs were dealt prior to the NHL's trade deadline on Monday.

On Sunday night, the Tampa Bay Lightning traded former Sea Dogs forward Mathieu Joseph and a draft pick to the Ottawa Senators for Nick Paul. Jospeh, 25, has spent his entire professional career with the Lightning organization, winning back-to-back Stanley Cup championships.

Joseph remains the only former Sea Dog to win a Stanley Cup title.

Joseph, who played with the Sea Dogs from 2013-14 to 2016-17, has eight goals and 10 assists in 58 games this season. While his chances of winning a third straight Stanley Cup are gone, Joseph will likely have a much more prominent role with the rebuilding Sens.

Mathieu Joseph’s arb case this summer was going to be an issue for cap-challenged Tampa Bay. Probably would not have qualified him, making him UFA. So really in Tampa’s eyes, a pending UFA for a pending UFA.

The Sens, of course, feature former Sea Dogs defenseman Thomas Chabot, who played with Joseph in Saint John and on Canada's world junior team. Chabot is out for the rest of the season with a broken hand.

Former Sea Dogs defenseman Nathan Beaulieu, meanwhile, was traded by the Winnipeg Jets to the Pittsburgh Penguins early Monday.

The Penguins have acquired defenseman Nathan Beaulieu from the Jets in exchange for a conditional 2022 seventh-round draft pick.

Beaulieu is signed through the 2021.22 season and his contract carries an AAV of $1.25 million.

Beaulieu is in the final year of a contract that carries a $1.25 million cap hit, and will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has been on LTIR with an unspecified lower-body retroactive to March 4 after a collision with the Stars' Ryan Suter in a game. He's not eligible to come off of LTIR until the Penguins' game against the Rangers on March 29 at the very earliest.

The 29-year-old has been with the Jets since being dealt to the squad in 2018-19. He recorded four assists in 24 games with the club this season. This will be Beaulieu's fourth NHL team following stops in Montreal, Buffalo and Winnipeg.
