Game Day 60: vs Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs are back home this afternoon, hosting the Cape Breton Eagles at 3 p.m.

The Sea Dogs are coming off an overtime loss in Bathurst yesterday afternoon and have now dropped four straight games. Saint John is still alive in the playoff race but, with nine games remaining, their chances are getting slimmer. The Sea Dogs are five points out of the final playoff spot(s) heading into action today.

This is the first of back-to-back games between the Sea Dogs and Eagles at TD Station. In an odd scheduling quirk, the two meet this afternoon and then again on Tuesday night.

2022-23 regular season records: The Sea Dogs are 20-36-2-1 for 43 points (fifth Maritimes/ninth Eastern/17th QMJHL) while the Eagles are 24-30-3-1 for 52 points (fourth Maritimes/eighth Eastern/14th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 6-5 overtime loss in Bathurst yesterday afternoon. Noah Reinhart, Cole Burbidge, Peter Reynolds, Brady Burns and Jacob Beaulieu scored for Saint John. Ventsislav Shingarov made 31 stops in the loss. The Eagles are coming off a 6-1 loss in Halifax last night. Cam Squires scored Cape Breton's lone goal. Nicolas Ruccia (four goals on 19 shots) and Oliver Satny (two goals on 15 shots) took the loss in net.

2022-23 head-to-head: The Sea Dogs are 3-3-1-0 against the Eagles this season while Cape Breton is 4-3-0-0 against Saint John.

Last meeting: Feb. 26 at Centre 200 where the Eagles edged the Sea Dogs 9-8. Angelo Fullerton, William Shields and Ivan Ivan all scored a pair of goals for Cape Breton while singles came from Cam Squires, Samuel Johnson and Trevor Thurston. Saint John had a pair of goals from Eriks Mateiko and singles from Vince Elie, Luka Benoit, Brady Burns, Jospeh Ianniello, Alexis Cournoyer and Noah Reinhart. Oliver Satny allowed eight goals on 37 shots in the win. Olivier Brideau (five goals on 23 shots) and Ventsislav Shingarov (four goals on 23 shots) took the loss in goal.

Ex-Sea Dogs on the Eagles: None.

Eagle to watch: Ivan Ivan had two goals and five assists in Cape Breton's recent 9-8 win over the Sea Dogs. The Cape Breton captain has four goals and 10 assists in seven games against Saint John this season.

Random stat: Cape Breton's Cam Squires has goals in four straight games - which includes goals against Saint John on Feb. 25 and Feb. 26.

Notes: Brady Burns continues to lead Saint John in points (59), goals (30) and assists (29)... Ivan Ivan leads Cape Breton in points with 74 and assists with 48... Samuel Johnson has a team high 31 goals... Saint John is 10-19-0-0 at home...
