RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 10-4

FINAL: Charlottetown 10, Saint John 4
SAINT JOHN - For a third straight home game, the Saint John Sea Dogs got smoked.

After falling 5-0 and 9-2 to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Harbour Station last weekend, the team returned home only to get hammered again - this time by score of 10-4 to the Charlottetown Islanders on Sunday afternoon.

As has been the case for much of the season, the Sea Dogs were in a close battle up until the third period but then let things slip away. On Sunday, the Dogs gave up five goals and were outshot 17-7.

Former Sea Dogs Daniel Hardie and Kevin Gursoy had great days against their old team. Hardie was named first star with two goals and three assists while Gursoy recorded four assists in a third star performance. Hunter Drew and Keith Getson also recorded two goals each while singles came from Brett Budgell, Nikita Alexandrov, Thomas Casey and Derek Gentile. Matthew Welsh made 28 stops in the win.

Anthony Boucher, Nicholas Deakin-Poot, Yohan Plamondon and Brady Burns all scored for Saint John. Alex D'Orio allowed all 10 goals on 39 shots.

If there was any positive, it's that Saint John was able to record three power play goals on five attempts and did not give Charlottetown a single man advantage.

Saint John now carries a seven-game losing streak into their six-game Quebec road trip. The Dogs, who are the lone team in the QMJHL without a road victory this season, will play their next seven matches away from Harbour Station due to the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Things are going to get harder before they get any easier.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 4-3

FINAL: Saint John 3, Charlottetown 4
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - A terrific goaltending performance by Alex D'Orio wasn't enough to push the Saint John Sea Dogs past the Charlottetown Islanders on Friday night at Eastlink Centre.

D'Orio faced 58 shots - an Islanders franchise record - in a 4-3 Sea Dogs loss. His night included 21 shots in both the first and third periods.

Former Sea Dogs Kevin Gursoy and Daniel Hardie once again hurt their old team. Gursoy had a goal and two assists while Hardie had a goal and an assist. Nikita Alexandrov and Keith Getson also scored for the Islanders while Dakota Lund-Cornish made 20 stops in the win.

James White, Maxim Cajkovic and Yohan Plamondon all scored for Saint John.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 9-2

FINAL: Cape Breton 9, Saint John 2
SAINT JOHN - It was a weekend to forget for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

After suffering a 5-0 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday, things went even worse for the team on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-2 to the same Eagles squad at Harbour Station.

Saint John was down just 2-1 after the first, but three goals by the Eagles in the opening 10 minutes of the third guided the visitors to an easy victory. Cape Breton is now 4-0-0-1 in their past five games.

The Eagles had nine different goal scorers on Sunday: Leon Gawanke, Mitchell Balmas, Mathias Laferriere, Felix Lafrance, Egor Sokolov, Gabriel Proulx, Brooklyn Kalmikov, Declan Smith and Alex Drover. Kevin Mandolese, who also started Saturday night's game, made 30 saves in the win.

Saint John goals came from Yohan Plamondon and Charlie DesRoches. Tommy DaSilva had another rough start, allowing nine goals on 33 shots.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 5-0

FINAL: Cape Breton 5, Saint John 0
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs let a close game get away from them on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored four times in the third period to edge the Sea Dogs 5-0. It was anybodies game heading into the final period - especially given how both teams were struggling to produce much of anything on the power play - but a couple quick goals set up a dominant final 20 minutes for the Eagles.

The Sea Dogs have had their struggles in third periods this season, now being outscored by a total of 25-9. Last Sunday's performance in Charlottetown was hopefully going to be a sign of the team turning things around - but apparently not.

Egor Sokolov scored twice for Cape Breton while singles came from Wilson Forest, Ryan Francis and Liam Kidney. Kevin Mandolese made 15 saves in the win.

Alex D'Orio made 36 saves in the loss.

The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.

Game Day 12: vs Screaming Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs return to action tonight, hosting the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

These two teams met a couple weeks ago at Harbour Station in a game that saw the Sea Dogs end their six-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Screaming Eagles.

Game time tonight for "Pink in the Rink" is 7 p.m.

TV/Radio/Webcast: Rogers TV/Sea Dogs Radio/QMJHL Live

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 6-5 (SO)

FINAL: Saint John 5, Charlottetown 6 (SO)
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - Two teams that have struggled to score this season had no problem finding the back of the net on Sunday afternoon at Eastlink Centre.

The Saint John Sea Dogs and Charlottetown Islanders, who entered the game as the league's two worst offensive teams (based on average goals per game), skated to a 5-5 tie through 65 minutes of hockey. The Islanders picked up the 6-5 victory thanks to Daniel Hardie's shootout goal.

The Islanders led 4-1 after 40 minutes and, given Saint John's third period struggles this season (they entered the game with five third period goals all year), looked like they would cruise to victory. But two quick goals by the Sea Dogs early in the third turned the tides. The Isles restored their two-goal lead, only to have it evaporate by a confident looking Saint John team.

The Sea Dogs had a number of chances to win the game in overtime, but Islanders goaltender Matthew Welsh made several tremendous saves. Welsh made 18 stops in the win (although the shot clock in the building had a lot more shots recorded by both teams).

Hunter Drew, Liam Peyton, Kevin Gursoy, Derek Gentile and Nikita Alexandrov all scored for Charlottetown. Gentile also had a pair of assists.

Saint John had a pair of goals from Robbie Burt and singles from Josh Lawrence, Charlie DesRoches and William Poirier. Alex D'Orio made 43 stops in the loss.

Game Day 11: at Charlottetown

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - The Saint John Sea Dogs are back in action this afternoon, visiting the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Sea Dogs will look to rebound from a 4-0 home loss to the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday, a loss that saw the club hang with the Maritimes Division leaders for 40 minutes only to let things slip away early in the third.

Game time this afternoon is 3 p.m. at Eastlink Centre.

TV/Radio/Webcast: None/Sea Dogs Radio/QMJHL Live

Records: The Sea Dogs are 2-6-2-0 for six points (sixth Maritimes, 17th QMJHL) while the Islanders are 4-5-1-0 for nine points (third Maritimes, 12th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 4-0 home loss to the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday. Alex D'Orio made 34 stops in the loss. RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 4-0

FINAL: Halifax 4, Saint John 0
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs contained the Memorial Cup hosts for 40 minutes on Friday at Harbour Station, but a rough third period did them in once again.

The Halifax Mooseheads scored three third period goals in a 4-0 win over the Sea Dogs in front of a light Friday crowd. It was 1-0 Halifax through 40 minutes with shots 22-18 in favour of the Moose - but the wheels fell off for the Dogs in the third, allowing three goals in a 2:43 span.

Halifax showed off its depth with goals from Brock McLeod, Raphael Lavoie, Xavier Parent and Samuel Asselin. Backup goaltender Cole McLaren made 28 saves for his first career shutout.

Alex D'Orio made 34 saves for Saint John in the loss.

Third periods have been an issue for Saint John for much of the season - as is the case for most young teams. Even in Tuesday's win the team did not have a pretty final 20 minutes. Saint John has now been outscored 20-5 in third periods this year.

Game Day 10: vs Mooseheads

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to make it back-to-back wins tonight at Harbour Station.

The Sea Dogs picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday, ending a six-game losing streak with a 5-3 victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Saint John will look to build off that win this evening when they host the Maritimes Division leading Halifax Mooseheads.

Game time tonight is 7 p.m.

TV/Radio/Webcast: Rogers TV/Sea Dogs Radio/QMJHL Live

Records: The Sea Dogs are 2-5-2-0 for six points (sixth Maritimes, 16th QMJHL) while the Mooseheads are 6-2-0-0 for 12 points (first Maritimes, third QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 5-3 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Tuesday at Harbour Station. Anthony Boucher and Yohan Plamondon both scored twice for Saint John while Maxim Cajkovic added a solo marker. Alex D'Orio made 36 stops in the win. The Mooseheads are coming off an 8-2 win over the Charlottetown Islanders last night on PEI. Arnaud Durandeau scored twice for the Moose while singles came from Gavin Hart, Justin Barron and Patrick Kyte. Saint John goals came from Brady Burns, Robbie Burt, Josh Lawrence and William Poirier. Alexis Gravel made 34 stops in the win. Alex D'Orio made 31 stops in the loss.

RECAP: Sea Dogs win 5-3

FINAL: Cape Breton 3, Saint John 5
SAINT JOHN - The streak is over.

The Saint John Sea Dogs ended a six-game losing skid on Tuesday night at Harbour Station, defeating the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-3. It was the club's second win of the season and first since Sept. 23.

In the victory, the Sea Dogs did a couple things they had not done this season: lead after a first period and score on the power play. Saint John did both in this game: leading after 20 minutes for the first time and scoring their first man advantage goal of the year to break a 0/30 slump.

Saint John adjusted their top line, replacing William Poirier on the wing with Anthony Boucher. The move seemed to work as Boucher scored a pair of goals while playing with linemates Josh Lawrence and Maxim Cajkovic. Saint John's top line has struggled to produce over the past few games, but the adjustment seemed to spark them. Cajkovic also had a goal to go along with six shots.

The suddenly hot Yohan Plamondon scored Saint John's other two goals (one being an empty netter). Plamondon now has points in four straight games and goals in three.

Alex D'Orio had one of his best starts of the season, making 36 stops. All in all, it was a good night for the Sea Dogs - a night the team no doubt hopes to replicate moving forward.

Mitchell Balmas, Brooklyn Kalmikov and Ryan Francis scored for Cape Breton. Kevin Mandolese was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots 21:13 of play. William Grimard made 16 stops in relief.

The Sea Dogs website has a more in-depth game recap.

Game Day 9: vs Screaming Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to put an end to their losing streak again today.

The Sea Dogs have lost six straight games heading into tonight's 7 p.m. matchup with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Harbour Station. Their last - and only - victory this season came in their second game of the year.

The Screaming Eagles, meanwhile, have lost back-to-back games heading into this evening's match.

TV/Radio/Webcast: None/Sea Dogs Radio/QMJHL Live

Records: The Sea Dogs are 1-5-2-0 for four points (sixth Maritimes, 17th QMJHL) while the Screaming Eagles are 3-4-0-0 for six points (fourth Maritimes, 13th QMJHL).

Phelix Martineau had a hat trick for Cape Breton while singles came from Egor Sokolov, Isiah Campbell, Ian Smallwood, Brooklyn Kalmikov and Ryan Francis. Robbie Burt, Brendan Sibley and Cole Reginato scored for Saint John. Kevin Mandolese and Ryan Miller each recorded seven saves in the win. Tommy DaSilva made 32 stops in the loss.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 7-2

FINAL: Saint John 2, Blainville-Boisbriand 7
SAINT JOHN - Second periods have been kind to the Saint John Sea Dogs this season - but that changed on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.

The Sea Dogs allowed three second period goals and were outshot 13-6 en route to a 7-2 home loss to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.

Saint John looked good at times - especially early in the first - but, like Friday in Bathurst, couldn't recover once things started to slip away.

Sea Dogs backup goaltender Tommy DaSilva continues to struggle, allowing seven goals on 43 shots in the loss. He has allowed six goals in both of his starts this season. Saint John goals came from Yohan Plamondon and Jeremy Poirier. The team once again failed to score on a power play (eight chances) and is now 0/30 on the season.

The Armada - playing their third road game in four days - had a pair of goals from Thomas Ethier and solo markers from Remy Anglehart, Luke Henman, Jasper Rannisto, Charles-Antoine Giguere and Peyton Hoyt. Mikhail Denisov made 27 saves in the win.

The loss was Saint John's sixth straight. They have not won since Sept. 23.

Game Day 8: vs Armada

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to end a five-game losing streak this afternoon at Harbour Station.

The Sea Dogs have had a fairly decent past two games if you subtract Friday's third period. The Dogs will look to get back on the winning track today when they take on a well travelled St. John's Fog Devils Montreal Junior Blainville-Boisbriand Armada squad.

Game time today is 3 p.m.

TV/Radio/Webcast: None/Sea Dogs Radio/QMJHL Live

Records: The Sea Dogs are 1-4-2-0 for four points (sixth Maritimes, 17th QMJHL) while the Armada are 3-2-0-0 for six points (third West, 10th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 7-1 loss in Bathurst on Friday night - a game that saw the club allow all seven goals in the third period. Yohan Plamondon scored Saint John's lone goal. Alex D'Orio made 23 stops in the loss. The Armada are coming off a 3-1 loss in Moncton last night. Alexander Katerinakis scored the Armada's only goal. Emile Samson made 35 stops in the loss.

2018-19 head-to-head: This is the first meeting of the season between the two.

2017-18 head-to-head: The Sea Dogs were 0-2-0-0 against the Armada last season while Blainville-Boisbriand went 2-0-0-0 against Saint John.

Last meeting: January 12 in Boisbriand where the Armada defeated the Sea Dogs 5-1. Maxime Collin had a hat trick for the Armada while Alex Barre-Boulet scored twice. Nicholas Deakin-Poot scored Saint John's only goal. Emile Samson only had to make 11 saves in the win. Alex D'Orio made 36 stops in the loss.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 7-1

FINAL: Saint John 1, Bathurst 7
BATHURST - The Saint John Sea Dogs could only play with fire for so long before getting burned on Friday night at the KC Irving Regional Centre.

The Sea Dogs were able to kill off the first five Acadie-Bathurst Titan power plays but couldn't contain them all - and it proved costly in a 7-1 loss to the Memorial Cup champions. The Titan scored the game-winner and an insurance marker on the same man advantage in what proved to be a goal heavy third for the Titan.

Bathurst entered the game with a solid 25% rating on the power play, but the Dogs struggled to stay out of the box at key times - and it burned them.

Saint John played a fairly solid game until a disastrous third period, which saw the club allow seven goals. The team continue to have better starts and the squad finally scored the opening goal of a game on Friday - but the wheels completely fell off in the third. The Sea Dogs have not won a game since opening weekend.

Cole Rafuse continues to be a Sea Dogs killer, scoring two on Friday to add to the four goals he scored against Saint John earlier this season. Noah Dobson also scored twice while solo markers came from Alexandre David, Charles-Andre Cypihot, Brandon Cianflone. Mark Grametbauer made 31 saves in the win.

Yohan Plamondon scored Saint John's lone goal. Alex D'Orio made 23 saves in the loss.

Game Day 7: at Bathurst

BATHURST – The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to build off last night’s overtime loss this evening in Bathurst.

The Sea Dogs lost 2-1 in overtime to the Gatineau Olympiques last night at Harbour Station. Despite being outshot quite badly, the game was even at times, which should help build some confidence moving forward.

Game time tonight is 7 p.m. at the KC Irving Regional Centre.

TV/Radio/Webcast: RogersTV/Sea Dogs Radio Live/QMJHL Live

Records: The Sea Dogs are 1-3-2-0 for four points (sixth Maritimes, 16th QMJHL) while the Titan are 2-3-0-0 for four points (fourth Maritimes, 14th QMJHL).

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 2-1 (OT)

FINAL: Gatineau 2, Saint John 1 (OT)
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs played one of their better games of the season on Thursday night at Harbour Station but were unable to skate away with a victory.

The Sea Dogs dropped a close and hard fought 2-1 overtime contest to the Gatineau Olympiques. Maxim Trepanier scored at 2:31 of overtime to give the visitors the extra point.

Charlie DesRoches scored his first QMJHL goal in the loss. Alex D'Orio looked like the Alex D'Orio of old, making 27 stops in the loss. He was spectacular at times - which was good to see after a rough start to the season.

Saint John got into some penalty trouble once again. Both Robbie Burt and Anthony Boucher - who both play on the team's second line - were ejected for illegal hits. Saint John's penalty kill was pretty good, at least.

Creed Jones made 14 stops in the win while Pier-Olivier Lacombe scored in regulation time. The Olympiques are now 4-0 on the road this season.
