RECAP: Goals For Everyone. Dogs Lose 9-6.

SAINT JOHN – It was bizarre night at Harbour Station.

A total of 15 goals were scored – including eight in the second period – in the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles’ 9-6 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday evening at Harbour Station.

After a fairly mild first period where Cape Breton scored twice to lead 2-0, things exploded in the second period. The Eagles were up 6-1 at one point in the second but the Sea Dogs didn’t pack it in. They chipped away at Cape Breton’s lead and came within one early in the third. But that would be as close as the Dogs would get.

It was a rough night for Saint John’s defense. They didn’t provide much help to Sebastien Auger who was pulled after allowing six goals on 27 shots. The Dogs also had a very tough time containing Cape Breton’s power play which scored on its first three opportunities.

One of the bright spots was that Saint John’s offense showed some life after a miserable performance on Friday night. They didn’t get a ton of shots on net but at least they were generating some scoring opportunities.

Sea Dogs goals came from Spencer Smallman, Jurij Repe, Stephen Anderson, Nathan Noel, Oliver Cooper, and Jason Cameron. Antoine Landry made 17 saves in relief.

Cameron Darcy had a hat trick for Cape Breton, Raphael Corriveau had two goals, and singles came from Kyle Farrell, Bradley Lalonde, Justin Hache, and Michael Lyle. Chase Marchand allowed five goals on 19 shots before getting the hook. Alex Bureau only made two stops in relief.

SAINT JOHN - The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 9-6 in a wild one on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

Cameron Darcy had a hat trick for the Eagles and Raphael Corriveau had two goals while solo markers came from Kyle Farrell, Bradley Lalonde, Justin Hache, and Michael Lyle.

Sea Dogs goals came from Spencer Smallman, Nathan Noel, Oliver Cooper, Jurij Repe, Stephen Anderson, and Jason Cameron. Sebastien Auger was pulled after allowing six goals on 28 shots. Antoine Landry made 19 saves in relief.

SAINT JOHN – The good news for the Saint John Sea Dogs is that they won’t have much time to dwell on one of their worst performances of the season.

The Sea Dogs lost 5-0 on home ice to the Victoriaville Tigres – who sit 13^th overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League – last night. Saint John’s struggling offense was the main story as it hard a difficult time getting anything going.

But the Sea Dogs will have an opportunity to make up for last night’s game as they host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles this evening at 7pm at Harbour Station. It is Saint John’s final home game of the first half.

Saint John enters action tonight with a 7-21-0-3 record and are last in the Telus Maritimes Division and 17^th overall. Not that it matters a ton, but the 18^th overall Shawinigan Cataractes are slowly gaining ground on the Dogs. With a win last night, the Cataractes are four points back and have played one less game.

Oliver Cooper leads the Sea Dogs in scoring with nine goals and 17 assists for 26 points in 31 games.

Meanwhile, the Screaming Eagles enter play today on a three-game winning streak. They sit second in the Maritimes Division and 10^th overall with a 16-11-0-3 record. They are also a solid 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games.

American Cameron Darcy continues to lead the Eagles in scoring with 16 goals and 24 assists for 40 points in 30 games.

News & Notes From Friday's Game

Some stuff from last night’s game…

• This was definitely one of the Saint John’s worst games of the year. The Dogs couldn’t get much of anything going offensively.
• Only four of the Sea Dogs’ 28 shots were considered dangerous by the league. Victoriaville had six more shots on goal and 22 of those shots were considered dangerous. It was a bad night.
• Saint John was awarded a full two-minute five-on-three advantage at 18:38 of the first as Mark Tremaine was called for cross checking and Ross Johnston was given a four-minute penalty for spearing. The Dogs were passing the puck around and stuff but were unable to hit the net with many shots. Lost opportunity for sure.
• Tigres goaltender Brandon Whitney made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season.
• After getting just 17 shots on goal on Thursday night in Halifax, Victoriaville had 15 on net in the first period.
• This was the final meeting of the regular season between the two. Victoriaville won both games and outscored Saint John 9-2.
• The good news about Teddy Bear Toss night: lots of bears were thrown onto the ice and will go to local charities.
• The bad news about Teddy Bear Toss night: fans threw the bears following Jonathan Diaby’s goal at 3:41 of the third. This kind of thing has happened before elsewhere, but to do it with over 16 minutes left in the third is odd. Even though Saint John was having a bad night offensively, they still had plenty of time to get a goal.
• Weird atmosphere for the toss, too. It’s usually party time when the Teddy Bear Toss goal is scored. It was just kind of awkward last night.
• The Sea Dogs players didn’t look too impressed when the bears started flying after the Tigres’ goal.
• Speaking of Diaby, he had two goals in this game. This was just his second game of the year.
• As expected, Jurij Repe took Michael Abbott’s spot on the top power play unit and ran the point with Oliver LeBlanc.
• Fredericton native and Tigres rookie Luc Deschenes took warmup but was scratched in this game. This was Victoriaville’s only visit to Saint John this year. They are in Moncton on Sunday.
• The Sea Dogs were without forwards Connor Donaghey (healthy) and Kelly Bent (healthy) along with defensemen Michael Abbott (hand) and Alexander McQuaid (healthy).

SAINT JOHN – Well, Teddy Bear Toss night was a rough one for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

In what has to be one of the low points of the season, the Sea Dogs were shutout on home ice on Teddy Bear Toss night against the Victoriaville Tigres - who certainly are not a powerhouse this year. The Tigres scored twice in the first and three times in the third to win 5-0 on Friday night at Harbour Station.

Despite there being lots of time left in the third for Saint John to score, Jonathan Diaby’s goal at 3:41 triggered a few fans to start tossing the teddies. Once they started, of course, they did not stop. Any hopes that it may inspire the Dogs to start to turn it up offensively didn’t happen.

Saint John couldn’t get much of anything going offensively in this game. Just four of their 28 shots were considered dangerous. The Dogs also had seven power play opportunities but struggled to get the puck on net.

It was a pretty solid road game by the Tigres who had a pair of goals from Diaby and singles from Philippe Hudon, Angelo Miceli, and Tommy Veilleux. Brandon Whitney made 28 saves for the shutout victory.

Sea Dogs netminder Sebastien Auger made 29 saves in the loss.

The good news for Saint John is that they can quickly forget about this game with Cape Breton in town on Saturday night. Also, although the Teddy Bear Toss was awkward, there were plenty of bears thrown onto the ice which will go to local charities. So that's good.

Jonathan Diaby scored twice while Tigres singles came from Philippe Hudon, Angelo Miceli, and Tommy Veilleux.

Sebastien Auger made 29 saves in the loss.
