Chartrand named to Canada's Hlinka roster

Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Cameron Chartrand has been named to Team Canada's roster for the upcoming 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

Chartrand was one of 25 players named to the team that will take part in the under-18 tournament from Aug. 11-16 in Czechia and Slovakia.

The 17-year-old is heading into his first season with the Sea Dogs. In 54 games with the Bishop Kearney Selects under-16 squad last year, Chartrand posted six goals and 46 assists. He also appeared in two games with the USHL's Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Chartrand and Sherbrooke Phoenix forward Thomas Rousseau were the only QMJHL players named to the team. Muskegon Lumberjacks forward and Fredericton native Tynan Lawrence, the younger brother for former Sea Dogs forward Josh Lawrence, was also named to the team.

Sea Dogs forward William Yared took part in the team's camp this week in Oakville, ON but did not crack the roster.

There will be one other Sea Dogs connection on this year's team: head coach and general manager Travis Crickard will be an assistant coach.

Canada's first game will be Aug. 11 against Finland. Czechia, Switzerland, Sweden, United States, Slovakia and Germany will also be taking part.

Hockey is getting closer

Folks, we're almost there.

The calendar flipping to August means that hockey is near. The Saint John Sea Dogs will play their first game of the QMJHL's pre-season in less than three weeks, visiting the Moncton Wildcats on Aug. 19.

A few news and notes...

• The QMJHL's pre-season trade period opens Aug. 1 and runs until Aug. 24.
• A new college hockey recruiting window opens on Aug. 1. While not a strict ranking, the Grand Forks Herald had Sea Dogs forward Alexis Joseph as the No. 2 player available behind Everett's Landon Dupont, who earned exceptional player status into the WHL.
• Sea Dogs forward William Yared and defenseman Cameron Chartrand are both taking part in Team Canada's under-18 camp in Oakville. They both suited up for Team Red on Thursday.
• Former Sea Dogs forward Oliver Cooper is returning to North America, signing with the ECHL's Florida Everblades. The 30-year-old has spent the past couple seasons in Europe. Cooper won an ECHL championship with the Fort Wayne Komets in 2021.
• Former Sea Dogs forward Matt Green will have a new home this season. According to Elite Prospects, the 27-year-old hasn't played since his final season at Dalhousie University in 2022-23.

• Some bad news for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens (and the QMJHL): Tynan Lawrence, the younger brother of former Sea Dogs forward Josh Lawrence, plans to return to the USHL's Muskegon Lumberjacks this season, reports Le Quotidien. Lawrence is a top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft.
• The Maritime Hockey League announced Thursday that it will adopt the IIHF's facial protection rule along with adopting the QMJHL's rule book. The move is part of a Hockey Canada pilot project.

Season ticket prices, info released

At long last, the Saint John Sea Dogs have released some details on season ticket memberships for the 2025-26 season.

In an email sent to fans on July 30, the Sea Dogs announced that season tickets would go on sale to the general public on Aug. 6. 

Below are the all-in prices – which the team hasn't listed in the past – for 2025-26 season ticket memberships.

Adult — $575 

Senior (60+) — $495 

25U — $300

Prices for the last two seasons were $500 for adult; $430 for senior and $260 for under-25 – but those prices did NOT include taxes and fees.

Below are a few of this year's season ticket member benefits, which include a couple new features.

Single game ticket prices have not yet been released. TD Station has made the switch to Ticketmaster and it will be interesting to see what kind of added fees are put on Sea Dogs tickets, which the platform is famous for.

As has been discussed several times, the Sea Dogs are one of the few teams that have not seen their attendance bounce back from the pandemic. The team averaged 2,811 fans per game last season, falling to 10th in the league.

With the on-ice product expected to start its upswing this season, hopefully there will be more fans in the building.

Notebook: Nathan Beaulieu retires

One of the all-time great Saint John Sea Dogs defensemen has hung up his skates.

32-year-old Nathan Beaulieu announced his retirement from professional hockey last week. He appeared in just eight games last season, all in the KHL.

Beaulieu hasn't played an NHL game since the 2022-23 season when he appeared in 52 contests with the Anaheim Ducks. He has spent the past two seasons overseas.

It was a solid pro hockey career for Beaulieu, appearing in 471 career NHL games split between the Ducks, Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was a first-round pick of the Habs in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Beaulieu spent four seasons with the Sea Dogs and was part of the group that played in three straight league finals and back-to-back Memorial Cups, winning two QMJHL championships and a national title.

He is the son of former Sea Dogs head coach and general manager Jacques Beaulieu, who selected his son in the fourth-round of the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft.

TRADE PERIOD OPENING

The QMJHL's summer trade period opens Aug. 1 and will run for a few weeks.

The Sea Dogs haven't been overly active on the trade front in recent years, but with such a large camp roster, perhaps we'll see some moves to make space for others. But also: maybe not. This is great analysis.

Fullerton loaned to Sea Dogs

The Saint John Sea Dogs have added another overager to their training camp roster.

The team confirmed Monday that Quispamsis native Angelo Fullerton will attend Sea Dogs camp on loan from the Cape Breton Eagles. In an unusually (but much appreciated) transparent news release, the Eagles stated that the Sea Dogs would send a 2027 sixth-round pick to Cape Breton if Fullerton makes Saint John's roster.

The forward, who will turn 20 next month, posted six goals and 10 assists in 46 games with the Eagles last season. He added two goals in six playoff games.

In 156 career QMJHL games, Fullerton has recorded 19 goals and 21 assists.

“Angelo has been great for our organization over the past three years, I am happy that he has a chance to go back home for his 20-year-old season,” said Eagles general manager Sylvain Couturier. “He deserves the chance to keep playing in this league after being such a good Eagle for these last few years.”

Fullerton – like a lot of Saint John's other camp invites – brings some size. He is listed at 6'3" and 198 lbs.

Fullerton is the second overage forward to join Sea Dogs camp on a loan. 20-year-old Natan Éthier, who has spent parts of the last four seasons with the Shawinigan Cataractes, will be attending as well.

Other overagers on Saint John's pre-season roster include forwards Tyler Peddle, Mitchell Wagner and Ben Cross; defenseman Nicolas Bilodeau; and goaltender Eric Young. Bilodeau has committed to the University of Ottawa for this season.

The Sea Dogs are expected to have a very large group of players attending training camp next month. Camp will presumably begin the weekend of Aug. 16 ahead of their first pre-season game on Aug. 19.

Keeping track of NCAA commits

The Saint John Sea Dogs are poised to have several NCAA committed players on their roster this season.

Forwards Zachary Morin (Boston University), Dylan Krayer (Arizona State) and Alexander Donovan (Denver) along with defensemen Cameron Chartrand (Boston College) and Everett Baldwin (Providence) could all return to Saint John's lineup or have officially signed on to join.

That list doesn't include other NCAA committed who could make or join the team. Below is a list of all the NCAA committed players currently on Saint John's pre-season roster, which includes two players – Will Felicio (Union College) and JJ Monteiro (Providence) – who appear set to play college hockey this season.

It's worth noting that these commitments could always change. Players could change schools, defer or decommit from college hockey entirely, which makes for an even more chaotic new world we've entered.

There's also the possibility (it's a strong likelihood at this point) that other players on Saint John's roster will commit to US colleges in the future.

There will be a number of former Sea Dogs playing NCAA hockey this season, which will, of course, be a first. Here's the list:
