Philip Fife scored at 15:41 of double-overtime to give
the Bearcats a 3-2 victory over the Summerside Western Capitals to win the
Eastern Canadian Championship. Because Summerside is hosting the RBC Cup, both
teams will appear in the national junior ‘A’ championship tournament.
Dylan McGuigan (pictured), who has played 14 career games with the
Saint John Sea Dogs, scored both Truro regulation time goals. The Bearcats also
feature former Dogs Grant West and David Mosher.
Summerside also has three former Sea Dogs – Danny
Chiasson, Spencer MacDonald, and Jason Seed. Chiasson had an assist in this
game.
The Capitals defeated the Bearcats last month to win the
Maritime Junior Hockey League’s Kent Cup.
The RBC Cup begins next Saturday in Summerside.
Elsewhere on Sunday…
- Simon Despres appeared in his first NHL playoff game of the year. He was a -2 and saw just 6:12 of ice time as his Pittsburgh Penguins edged the New York Islanders 5-4 in overtime. Despres played in three playoff games with the Pens last year.
- In the ECHL, former Sea Dogs defensemen Charles-Olivier Roussel and David MacDonald were held pointless as their Cincinnati Cyclones lost 3-2 in overtime to the Reading Royals. Stanislav Galiev did not play for the Royals again. The Royals now lead the Eastern Conference Final 2-0.
