Notebook: More draft details released

The QMJHL's first virtual Entry Draft is less than a week away.

Next Friday night, the QMJHL will hold its first round which will feature 20 picks. The remainder of the draft will be held the following day.

This year's Entry Draft won't feature the "miniature NHL Draft" pageantry, but a few more details on what the event will look like have come out. Here's what Le Droit reported this past week:
  • There have been some worries about the draft's broadcast after the problems that came about during the Draft Lottery. That shouldn't be a problem this time: the broadcast will be headquartered from a studio in Granby rather than the league's office.
  • Commissioner Gilles Courteau will announce all the picks and trades. Typically team officials announce picks from the stage.
  • League communications manager Maxime Blouin said they are expecting the first round to last around two hours. Obviously that could change depending on how many trades take place.
  • Teams will have three minutes to make a selection.
Also of note: the league considered moving its draft later into June if the NHL had decided to hold its draft the same weekend.

DOGS PICKS
The QMJHL posted the draft order for all rounds this past week. Here's where Saint John is currently picking:

Round 1, 3rd overall (via Baie-Comeau)
Round 1, 15th overall (via Drummondville)
Round 2, 34th overall (via Rimouski)
Round 4, 70th overall (via Charlottetown)
Round 5, 88th overall (via Charlottetown)
Round 7, 120th overall
Round 9, 156th overall
Round 11, 192nd overall
Round 13, 228th overall
Round 14, 246th overall

The first round begins Friday night at 7:30 p.m. and rounds 2-14 will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. The trade period is believed to be beginning on Wednesday.

TUESDAY TAKEOVER
Ahead of the trading period opening, the Sea Dogs will be holding a special Tuesday night Facebook Live, which will include president and general manager Trevor Georgie and head scout Anthony Stella.
Could we see some big news announced during this? Rogers TV's Craig Eagles thinks it's a possibility.

GURSOY TO RYERSON
Former Sea Dogs forward Kevin Gursoy has committed to Ryerson University in Toronto for the 2020-21 season.
Gursoy spent the 2017-18 campaign with Saint John, recording 11 goals and seven assists in 60 games. This past season, the overager registered 24 goals and 32 assists in 65 games split between Charlottetown and Halifax.

The Sea Dogs should be happy he's no longer playing against them: Gursoy had seven goals and five assists in six games against Saint John this past season and seven goals and nine assists in eight games in 2018-19.

DRAFT RANKINGS
The Athletic unveiled its list of the top 122 prospects available for this year's NHL Draft - whenever that takes place.

Sea Dogs defensemen Jeremie Poirier was ranked 19th and William Villeneuve 79th, respectably.

Poirier, as we all know, is an intriguing prospect given his high-end offensive abilities and regular struggles on the defensive side.

"He was one of the most divisive prospects this season in discussions among scouts, with some saying he’s a certain first-round pick and others saying they wouldn’t use a second-round pick on him," writes Corey Pronman.

REMEMBERING AUGER
Sebastian Auger's U Sports career came to an end this year. His numbers during his five-year run with UQTR are pretty remarkable.
Auger played with the Sea Dogs from 2011 to 2015. He was named to the Sea Dogs' 15th Anniversary Team in March, joining Alex D'Orio.
