Notebook: Talking tacos

SAINT JOHN - There was a nice little surprise for fans at TD Station this weekend.

"Taco Boyz Express" has opened beside the Moosehead Lounge (where Tim Hortons used to be located) on the TD Station concourse. The menu includes tacos, burritos and a few dessert options like churros and deep fired cheesecake.

It's a nice addition to the building's very ordinary concession lineup.

NEW PARTNERSHIP
The Sea Dogs and the Saint John Firefighters announced a new partnership on Friday. From Facebook:

Your Saint John Firefighters were on Saint John's beautiful boardwalk today to announce our new partnership with the Saint John Sea Dogs. President Tyler Embree had the honor of announcing the first annual "Battle of The Badges" hockey tournament. This event will take place on February 6th, 7th, and 8th at TD Station!

This tournament will consist of 8 teams. 4 teams of firefighters, and 4 teams of police officers.

Your Saint John Firefighters are excited to take the new trophy home! With many of our players having been drafted to, or played in leagues such as the QMJHL, CHL, AUS, Senior A, Prep School Hockey, and Vito's "AAA", you know that the action will be intense!

We would like to thank the Saint John Sea Dogs for continuing to be an excellent partner in both our charity endeavours, and the Battle of the Badges.

A special thanks to Andy Childs and Trevor Georgie for their unwavering support.

The Sea Dogs will play home games the nights of Feb. 6-7.

NEW TECH COMING
Streams of Sea Dogs games from TD Station are expected to be upgraded soon.

The Sea Dogs have new cameras and production equipment on the way. The new gear has not yet arrived, so the team's games this past weekend looked the same as previous years. That should change soon.

The Sea Dogs – and all QMJHL teams – are now being streamed through FloHockey. It's the first of a seven year deal between the streaming service and the league.

BACK AT IT
The Sea Dogs will play their next three games on the road.

This weekend, the Sea Dogs will take on the Halifax Mooseheads on Friday and Saturday at Scotiabank Centre. Both games have 7 p.m. starts.

The Mooseheads opened the season with a home-and-home with the Charlottetown Islanders this past weekend. The Moose fell 4-1 at Eastlink Centre on Friday before rebounding with a 5-4 shootout win on home ice Saturday.

After this weekend's games, the Sea Dogs will be the opponent for the Moncton Wildcats' home opener on Oct. 4, which will include a championship banner raising ceremony.

The Sea Dogs return to TD Station on Sunday, Oct. 5 when they host the Chicoutimi Sagueneens.

HENRY ON SLAMMERS
Joshua Henry has joined the Woodstock Slammers of the NCDC.

Henry, who played one game with the Sea Dogs last season, registered an assist in two games with the Slammers this weekend. Woodstock is winless in five games.

The 17-year-old, a sixth-round pick of Saint John in the 2024 QMJHL Entry Draft, spent most of last season with the MHL's Fredericton Red Wings. Henry is committed to Lindenwood University of the NCAA in 2027.

The St. Stephen County Moose, meanwhile, won their NCDC opener on Friday, defeating the CT Chiefs North 5-2 at the Garcelon Civic Center. The Moose fell to the Chiefs, 6-5, in Biddeford, Maine on Saturday.

SIGN
I didn't drive by, but the City said it was turning the Saint John sign blue this past Friday, the night of the Sea Dogs' home opener.

OTHER THINGS
  • Sea Dogs rookie forward Alexis Joseph was named one of the players to watch in the QMJHL this season by the league website.
  • The IIHF website has a story on Gardiner MacDougall, which mentions his Memorial Cup title with the Sea Dogs. “It was one of those whirlwind moments,” MacDougall said of his short time with the Sea Dogs. “We had to push hard, work fast, and find ways to get better every day.”
  • 16 officials are joining the QMJHL this season, according to the league.
  • Sunset Grill is the Sea Dogs' helmet sponsor this season. It's just the second helmet sponsor ever for the Sea Dogs, with the first being local tech company Procedureflow.
  • Another former Sea Dog has landed in the BCHL. 18-year-old defenseman John Lumsden, who appeared in 26 games with Saint John last season, has joined the Salmon Arm Silverbacks where he's posted a goal in two games.
  • Speaking of the BCHL, former Sea Dogs forward Dylan Krayer scored the first goal of the season for the West Kelowna Warriors on Friday. The Warriors defeated the Blackfalds Bulldogs 4-2.
  • Former Sea Dogs forward Coen Miller currently sits in a tie for fifth in MHL scoring with eight points (three goals and five assists) in four games with the Summerside Western Capitals. Ben Cross, meanwhile, sits in a tie for eighth with seven points (four goals and three assists) in four games with the Chaleur Lightning.
    • The Bathurst-based Lightning played their first home game on Friday, defeating the Edmundston Blizzard 6-3 in front of 2,147 fans at the KC Irving Regional Centre.
  • We're inching closer to college hockey season which means some pre-season rankings are coming out. Providence (Kale McCallum) and Quinnipiac (Nate Tivey) both made USCHO.com's pre-season top-20.
  • The Sea Dogs were 0/7 on the power play this weekend. The Quebec Remparts and Val-d'Or Foreurs are the only other QMJHL teams to not score on the man advantage yet.
  • Only three QMJHL teams didn't collect a point on opening weekend: the Remparts, Baie-Comeau Drakkar and Victoriaville Tigres.
  • This was crazy.
