Notebook: Mateiko done for season

Hershey Bears
Some brutal news for former Saint John Sea Dogs captain Eriks Mateiko.

Mateiko will miss the rest of his rookie American Hockey League season and the upcoming Winter Olympic Games after having surgery this week.

"Hershey Bears forward Eriks Mateiko underwent a surgical procedure to repair his right Achilles tendon yesterday afternoon following a skate blade laceration during Sunday’s game in Hershey," the team tweeted on Tuesday. "Based on the nature of the procedure, Mateiko will miss the remainder of the season."

You can the see incident below.
The 20-year-old has posted a goal and five assists in 27 AHL games. He was recently named to Latvia's Olympic roster.

STRUGGLES IN R-N
The Sea Dogs ended a long drought on Wednesday.

The Sea Dogs hadn't won in Rouyn-Noranda since Oct. 14, 2016. They had dropped seven straight games at Glencore Arena, collecting just one point over that span.

Here's a look at the results of Saint John's last nine games in Rouyn-Noranda.

Jan. 14, 2026: 4-3 OTW
Jan. 31, 2025: 6-1 loss
Oct. 15, 2023: 4-0 loss
Feb. 2, 2023: 4-2 loss
Nov. 20, 2021: 6-5 SOL
Nov. 15, 2019: 6-3 loss
Jan. 20, 2019: 8-4 loss
Feb. 17, 2018: 5-3 loss
Oct. 14, 2016: 4-2 win

The Sea Dogs will finish the regular season with a 2-0 record against the Huskies this season, winning at home and on the road.

BALDWIN STILL HOT
It feels like every week we're talking about Everett Baldwin's offensive output.
The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect scored his 10th goal of the season on Thursday, moving him into a tie for third in QMJHL defensemen goal scoring.

Baldwin has now scored six goals in nine games since the Christmas break. With two assists on Thursday as well, he has 13 points during that span.

TALKING PRACTICE
The Sea Dogs practiced at Montreal's Bell Centre on Tuesday as they made their way to northern Quebec.
BLACHMAN SUSPENDED
Former Sea Dogs forward Nico Blachman has been suspended 12 games by the ECHL for a boarding major on Jan. 11. Blachman was also fined by the ECHL and released by the Fort Wayne Komets.
According to the ECHL, "Blachman is fined and suspended for five games under Rule #28 – Supplementary Discipline as the result of his major penalty and game misconduct for boarding at 17:02 of the first period and for an additional seven games based on his previous supplemental discipline history."

Blachman had appeared in just four games with the Komets this season, recording 38 penalty minutes.

OTHER THINGS
  • Former Sea Dogs goaltender Justin Robinson dressed as the Summerside Western Capitals' backup on Thursday. It was the first time he dressed for the team since being signed by the Capitals.
  • Josh Lawrence is off to Slovakia.
  • 17-year-old forward Jamie Glance, a sixth-round pick of Saint John in the 2024 QMJHL Entry Draft, scored the game-winner in Thursday's USA Hockey All-American game. The game featured players from the USNTDP squad and other players from the USHL.
  • The Chicoutimi Sagueneens were once again ranked first in the CHL Top-10 rankings. The Moncton Wildcats were sixth. And how about the expansion Penticton Vees coming in at No. 10?
  • Along with the Gatineau Olympiques and the OHL's Ottawa 67's playing back-to-back games this weekend, the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies are visiting the OHL's Sudbury Wolves on Sunday.
  • A couple of big losses are coming for the Huskies: star forward Lars Steiner, a 2026 NHL Draft prospect, and defenseman Guus Van der Kaaijhas have signed with HC Davos for next season.
  • Miramichi native Charlie Morrison has committed to UConn.
  • Overage defenseman Jordan Tourigny, now with the Sagueneens, has committed to play at Northeastern University next season. The fact that Northeastern won't have a home rink for the next few seasons – the school is tearing down historic Matthews Arena to make room for a replacement – doesn't seem to be hurting recruitment.
  • Another Chicoutimi commit.
  • CHCO reports that the County Moose are staying in St. Stephen for at least three more seasons. The Moose are 7-20-1-4 in their first season in the National Collegiate Development Conference.
  • Trenton, New Jersey's new ECHL team will be called the Trenton Ironhawks, it was announced Tuesday. The Utah Grizzlies will be relocating to Trenton for the 2026-27 season.
