Notebook: Sea Dogs returning to St. Stephen

The Saint John Sea Dogs are returning to St. Stephen it appears.

St. Stephen's Garcelon Civic Center has shared on Facebook that the venue will host the Sea Dogs and Moncton Wildcats in a QMJHL pre-season game on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The Sea Dogs and Wildcats faced off in St. Stephen last year as well. Moncton won the game 4-1.

The Sea Dogs are 1-2-0-0 in pre-season play at the Garcelon Civic Center.

TRADE PERIODS
From Jeremy Fraser of the Cape Breton Post, here's when you could see player movement this week.
LATVIA DONE IN QUARTERS
Olivers Murnieks and Team Latvia had their IIHF World Championship come to an end in the quarterfinals on Thursday, falling 2-0 to Norway.

Murnieks did not play in the game.

The Sea Dogs forward appeared in five of Latvia's eight games and was held pointless.

Finland will take on Switzerland in the gold medal game while Canada will play Norway for bronze.

VELENO'S SEASON OVER
There will not be any former Sea Dogs playing in this year's Stanley Cup Final.

Joe Veleno – the only remaining Sea Dogs alumnus in the playoffs – and the Montreal Canadiens had their season come to a close on Friday when they were eliminated by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Veleno played just 6:33 in the game and finished a -1 with no shots on goal.

The 26-year-old appeared in nine playoff games with the Habs, registering one assist and a -3 rating. This was the first time Veleno had played games in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Stanley Cup Final between the Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights begins Tuesday.

EXPRESS SIGNINGS
The Fredericton Express of the Beausejour Senior Hockey League announced the signings of a couple former Sea Dogs recently.

The first to be announced was Dawson Stairs, who spent last season with the league champion Dalhousie Marauders and finished third in BSHL scoring with 51 points in 20 games.

Stairs, a Fredericton native, spent parts of two seasons with the Sea Dogs.

The Express have also re-signed former Dog Ryan Tesink, who finished second in league scoring with 53 points in 20 games. The Saint John native spent parts of three seasons with the Sea Dogs, helping the club win back-to-back QMJHL championships in 2011 and 2012.

The BSHL season typically begins in October.

USHL HAPPENINGS
The Sioux Falls Stampede are USHL Clark Cup champions, defeating the Muskegon Lumberjacks 4-3 in double overtime last Saturday to win the series 3-1.

Forward JJ Monteiro, a 12th-round pick of Saint John in the 2022 QMJHL Entry Draft, led the Stampede in playoff scoring, posting eight goals and four assists in 14 games.

Monteiro, who turned 20 in January, is expected to play at Providence College in the fall.

Latvian goaltender and world junior star Linards Feldbergs was named USHL playoff MVP, finishing "the Clark Cup Playoffs with a 1.91 goals-against average, .939 save percentage, and two shutouts. He had a 1.66 goals-against average, .952 save percentage, and a shutout in the Clark Cup Final series."

Feldbergs spent the 2024-25 season with the Sherbrooke Phoenix. He is expected to play at Merrimack College in the fall.

REMPARTS/MEYER
It looks like the Quebec Remparts are close to adding American forward Carter Meyer, one of the top prospects for the 2027 NHL Draft. This would be a huge add for the Remparts and the QMJHL.
Meyer is a Boston University commit.
