Sea Dogs Win Big At Saltys

The Saint John Sea Dogs were big winners at tonight’s Salty awards held at the Saint John Ale House.

The Sea Dogs swept all three categories they were nominated for. Team captain Jonathan Huberdeau was named Twitter Person of the Year, SeaDogsTV picked up Hottest YouTube honours, and some website called Station Nation was named Coolest Blog.

“I’d like to thank all the Sea Dogs fans and followers that voted and supported us this year,” said SN creator Jamie Tozer. “Obviously, this award would not have been possible without the help of Bert, Marc, Cameron and Andrew. Also, a big thanks to the Sea Dogs for their support.

“I’d also like to say thank you to the 2012 Memorial Cup selection committee, Martin Mondou and the Cataractes organization, and QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau for giving us unlimited amounts of material to write about.”

Tozer was nominated for Twitter Person of the Year last year. This is SN’s first Salty award.

“Actually, does this blog post make this site uncool? What do you think? Maybe you shouldn’t include this quote in the post.”

There was some controversy on the interweb as nobody that writes for SN showed up at the awards. Rumors began to swirl that Tozer refused to show because of human rights issues or some other political reason that Tim Thomas told him about. I figured he was spending the evening getting himself mentally prepared for the Rob Faulds show tomorrow tonight. We may never know the real answer.

According to documents obtained by SN, Tozer did not sign his nominee card before The Saltys began tonight. The Saltys Committee is currently investigating the matter and SN could be stripped of the award, giving the win to the runner-up. All individual statistics would remain intact, however.

“I feel comfortable with the situation,” said Tozer, speaking as if this was all made up. “So what if I didn’t sign a piece of paper. As if that would actually get a win removed from someone. Ha!”

Huberdeau, SeaDogsTV, & SN Nominated For Salty Awards

Jonathan Huberdeau, SeaDogsTV, and the website you are currently reading have all been nominated for Salty awards. The Saltys are Saint John’s annual social media awards.

Huberdeau has been nominated for “Twitter Person of the Year.” The Saint John Sea Dogs captain currently has 15,451 followers under the handle @JonnyHuby11.

SeaDogsTV has been nominated for “Hottest YouTube.” We can’t say enough about SeaDogsTV. If the rest of the CHL had pages like this, the world would be a better place.

Lastly, your favourite Sea Dogs blog has been nominated for “Coolest Blog.”

“When we started this blog three years ago, we had no idea what we were doing,” said Station Nation creater Jamie Tozer in an emotional text message this morning. “Three years later we still have no clue what we are doing but it seems to be working.”

“Our most popular blog post was about a Kijiji ad. That’s probably all you need to know about this site.”

Station Nation was nominated for a Twitter award last year. This is Huberdeau’s and SeaDogsTV’s first nominations.

You can vote for your favourite social media sites/personalities on The Saltys website. Voting closes at noon on February 15. The winners will be announced on February 17^th at the Saint John Ale House.

SALTYS

GORMLEY

More details about Brandon Gormley’s injury at the end of Saturday’s game have come out. According to The Guardian, “Gormley dove to knock the puck away from Sea Dogs' star Charlie Coyle.

“In the process, the heel of Coyle's skate came up and struck him in the throat.

“The skate just missed Gormley's jugular, leaving a two-and-a-half inch cut on the left side of his neck.”

Gormley was taken to a hospital and received two stiches. He apparently had to wait six hours in the hospital because of other emergency incidents. He also suffered a bruised left foot in the game but hopes to play on Wednesday against Bathurst at the Bionest Centre.

Also according to The Gurdian, Kirill Kabanov, who got smoked by Jason Cameron in the third period, suffered a concussion.

The Saltys are the first ever celebration of the Saint John social media community. On the evening of February 17th, 2011 a diverse group of tweeps, facebookers and bloggers will gather at the Saint John Ale House from 5pm to 7pm to honor just a few standouts from the past year (Feb. 1st 2010 - Feb. 1st 2011) who have used social media to achieve personal, business and community related goals. Awards will be given out for Twitter Person of the Year, Best Facebook Page, Coolest Blog and Best Use of Social Media in a Campaign. This fun & festive event is free to attend.

Station Nation creator Jamie Tozer is up for the ‘Twitter Person of the Year’ award and we need your help in the voting. Simply go to The Saltys website list of nominees and select the correct Twitter person. Instructions can be found below:

“It’s an honour to be nominated,” said Tozer, somehow peeling his eyes off TweetDeck for a five-minute interview this morning. “Nearly every game has been live tweeted over the past two years as well as most Sea Dogs related events.”

“People don’t want to wait until the next day or even later in the day to receive news now; they want to get it as it is happening,” Tozer stated before the massive media scrum.

“Times are a changing. You know what I’m saying, man?”
