Notebook: Chabot to be inducted into Sea Dogs Hall of Fame

It was announced this past week that defenseman Thomas Chabot will be inducted into the Sea Dogs Hall of Fame in June.

“It’s an honour for me because Saint John is where it all started,” said the Ottawa Senators d-man. “I loved every minute that I spent playing and living there, I met great people along the way and created friendships that will last a lifetime.”

The Sea Dogs surprised Chabot with the news during a stop at the Bell Centre this week.

Chabot, along with former Sea Dogs coaches Gerard Gallant and Mike Kelly, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame June 23-25.

Jonathan Huberdeau and Mike Thomas have previously been inducted. According to a news release, "the 2024 Sea Dogs Hall of Fame class will be announced at this year’s ceremony."

Game Day 48: at Gatineau

GATINEAU, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs play their final Quebec road game of the regular season tonight, visiting the Gatineau Olympiques.

The Sea Dogs will be in for quite a challenge this evening. The Olympiques loaded up at the trade deadline and have been playing great hockey of late, winning four straight and going 8-2 in their last 10 contests.

Saint John is 1-1-0-0 on this three-game road trip so far. They had a solid 5-4 win in Val-d'Or on Wednesday before falling 4-2 to the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Thursday.

Game time today at the Slush Puppie Centre is 5 p.m. Atlantic.

ROUYN-NORNADA, QC - A big middle frame pushed the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to a victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Thursday at Glencore Arena.

The Huskies scored three times and outshot the Sea Dogs 25-11 in the second period en route to a 4-2 win, stopping Saint John's winning streak at three games.

Saint John had another strong road period in the first and led 2-1. But the Huskies turned it up a notch in the second, scoring three times in the first 9:17 to take a 4-2 advantage - which included a five-on-three power play goal.

Saint John had a couple power play chances in an uneventful third period but could not cut Rouyn-Noranda's lead.

Benjamin Brunelle, Leighton Carruthers, Tristan Allard and Louis-Philippe Fontaine had Rouyn-Noranda goals. Former Sea Dogs netminder Thomas Couture made 33 stops in the loss.

Pavel Simek and Cole Burbidge scored for Saint John. Olivier Brideau was busy in net, making 44 saves in the loss. The rookie netminder was named the game's first star.

Game Day 47: at Rouyn-Noranda

ROUYN-NORANDA, QC - It's pretty much always cold in Rouyn-Noranda, but it will be especially chilly tonight.

Evening temperatures are expected to drop to -37, perfect weather for the Saint John Sea Dogs and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies to play inside the cozy confines of the Glencore Arena. Game time is 8 p.m. Atlantic.

The temperatures are cold, but the Sea Dogs have been anything but. Saint John won their fourth straight road game on Wednesday, defeating the Val-d'Or Foreurs 5-4.

These final two games of Saint John's three-game Quebec road trip will be the most challenging. The Huskies sit sixth overall in the QMJHL standings while the Gatineau Olympiques are fourth.

Thomas Verdon scored twice for Rouyn-Noranda while Bill Zonnon added a single. Kyle Hagen made 19 stops in the loss.

FINAL: Saint John 5, Val-d'Or 4

VAL-D'OR, QC - Pavel Simek scored with 2:30 remaining in regulation time to lift the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 5-4 win over the Val-d'Or Foreurs on Wednesday.

Simek, on a breakaway, beat Foreurs netminder William Blackburn with a vintage Jonathan Huberdeau deke to his forehand to break a 4-4 tie. Val-d'Or pressed for a tying goal in the final couple minutes but could not connect.

Saint John led 3-0 and 4-2 at times but allowed Val-d'Or to get back in the game. The Foreurs scored two goals in the first 6:25 of the third period to tie things up - a tie that was ultimately broken by Simek's game-winner.

Saint John's import players had quite a performance in this content. Along with a goal and three assists from Simek, Eriks Mateiko netted a hat trick. Noah Reinhart scored Saint John's other goal while Ventsislav Shingarov made 32 saves in the win.

Vincent Fredette, David Doucet, Nathan Drapeau and Thomas Larouche scored for Val-d'Or. Blackburn made 24 saves in the loss.

Saint John has now won four straight games. They continue their three-game Quebec road trip tomorrow night in Rouyn-Noranda.

Game Day 46: at Val-d'Or

VAL-D'OR, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to keep on rolling this week in Quebec.

The Sea Dogs begin their final three-game Quebec road trip tonight, visiting the Val-d'Or Foreurs. They visit Rouyn-Noranda tomorrow before heading south to close out the trip on Saturday in Gatineau.

The Sea Dogs have won three straight road games, which includes back-to-back 7-3 wins this past weekend - one in Bathurst and the other in Moncton. With 34 points, Saint John is in the mix for the final playoff spots, making every game meaningful.

The Foreurs sit just six points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the overall standings.

Game time tonight is 8 p.m.
