Recap: Sea Dogs lose 4-1

FINAL: Cape Breton 4, Saint John 1
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - It wasn't a pretty end to the Saint John Sea Dogs' five-game winning streak on Saturday.

The Sea Dogs were bettered in all areas by the Cape Breton Eagles, falling 4-1 at TD Station. It was Saint John's first loss in five games and the first time in seven matches they failed to earn at least a point.

Maxim Schafer scored twice for Cape Breton while Aiden McCullough and Noah Jettelson added singles. Lucas Beckman made 16 stops in the win.

Saint John struggled at both ends of the ice, giving the Eagles a number of odd-man rushes and quality chances while also being unable to generate a lot in terms of offense. The Sea Dogs were outshot 19-5 and 8-5 in the second and third periods, respectively.

Saint John's only significant amount of offensive zone pressure came late in the first period, allowing Olivier Groulx to open the scoring and give the Dogs a 1-0 lead after one. Cape Breton took control in the final two periods though, scoring twice in each.

Even the Sea Dogs' power play, which has been so good all year, couldn't solve the Eagles, going 0/4.

Samuel Meloche made 28 stops in the loss.

Saint John won't have much time to think about this loss. They host the Val-d'Or Foreurs tomorrow at TD Station – which will not be an easy battle.

Game Day 10: vs Eagles

SAINT JOHN - Two teams that have been heading in opposite directions of late collide today at TD Station.

The Saint John Sea Dogs, who have won five straight, host the Cape Breton Eagles, losers of three straight, this afternoon at 4 p.m. Both teams were expected to be amongst the best in the QMJHL this season but have gotten off to very different starts.

This will already be the third meeting of the season between the Sea Dogs and Eagles. Both of the previous two games required extra time.

Both teams should be rested and ready for this big tilt. The Eagles haven't played since Monday in Sherbrooke while the Sea Dogs have been off since hosting the Drummondville Voltigeurs on Monday.

Winning (streak) ways are back

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The vibes are high around the Saint John Sea Dogs right now.

The Sea Dogs won a fifth straight game on Monday afternoon, defeating the Drummondville Voltigeurs 4-3 in a shootout. The team has also collected at least a point in each of their past seven games and have suffered just one regulation loss this year.

Saint John is 6-1-1-1, placing them third overall in the QMJHL standings.

Sea Dogs fans are understandably excited about the start – and with good reason. This five-game winning streak is the longest the team has had since 2021-22, the year Saint John hosted the Memorial Cup.

If you remove that 2021-22 season, it's been a rough decade in terms of consistency for the Sea Dogs. Here's a look at the team's longest winning streaks in each of the past 10 seasons.

2025-26: 3
2024-25: 4
2023-24: 3
2022-23: 3 (done 3 times)
2021-22: 15
2020-21: 3 (done 3 times)
2019-20: 3 (done 6 times)
2018-19: 3
2017-18: 3
2016-17: 9

The Sea Dogs also had a 10-game and five-game winning streak in 2021-22. In 2016-17, they also had eight-game and five-game streaks.

Saint John won the Memorial Cup in 2022 and the QMJHL championship in 2017. The franchise is certainly hoping that cycle of championships continues in 2027.

Something else worth noting: Saint John is 4-0-1-1 on home ice this season. The Sea Dogs had one of the league's worst home records last season (11-19-2-0) and had more road wins (12) than home. This is a positive start to the year – and certainly another reason for Sea Dogs fans to be happy right now.

Saint John concludes a stretch of six straight home games with a tough back-to-back at TD Station this weekend. On Saturday at 4 p.m., the Sea Dogs host the struggling Cape Breton Eagles, who will try and turn their season around with a big road win in Saint John. Then on Sunday, the Dogs welcome the Val-d'Or Foreurs who currently sit first overall in the QMJHL.

According to a Hockey Canada press release, "the 2026 U17 World Challenge kicks off Nov. 1 with Canada White taking on Czechia and Canada Red matching up against Finland. Sea Dogs move up to No. 5

Saint John Sea Dogs
A three-win weekend has pushed the Saint John Sea Dogs up two spots in the latest CHL Top-10.

The Sea Dogs moved up to the No. 5 spot in the week four rankings. Saint John had a perfect long weekend, posting wins over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, Charlottetown Islanders and Drummondville Voltigeurs.

Saint John has now won five straight games and collected points in seven straight. They sit second overall in the QMJHL standings with only the Quebec Remparts – who were ranked second nationally – sitting ahead of them.

The Memorial Cup host Guelph Storm remain in the No. 1 spot.

A five-game winning streak, including three victories last week, has launched the Sea Dogs (6-1-1-1) up to the number five spot in this week’s rankings. Jamie Glance (2G-4A) opened Friday’s game against Rouyn-Noranda with two goals that the Sea Dogs never looked back from in a 6-3 win. The next day, three unanswered second-period goals put Saint John up 4-1, before they held off a third-period Charlottetown push to hold on for a 4-3 win. And finally, Glance played hero in the shootout for the Sea Dogs as they overcame a late tying goal from Drummondville that forced overtime. Zachary Morin (2G-2A) and Dylan Rozzi (3A) each had points in all three games, while Alexis Joseph (2G-1A), Thomas Charbonneau (3A) and Jabez Seymour (1G-2A) had three-point weekends. Samuel Meloche stopped 56 of 62 shots, and all three shooters in Monday’s shootout, in two wins over the weekend, and 2010-born Lawrence Williams scored his first QMJHL goal in Monday’s win against Drummondville. The Sea Dogs remain at home this weekend for the final two games of a six-game home stretch, with their third game of the season against Cape Breton on Saturday and then Val-d’Or on Sunday.

The Sea Dogs have a tough back-to-back on home ice this weekend. On Saturday they'll host the Cape Breton Eagles, who were predicted to be a top team in the league this season but are off to a disappointing 2-3-1-3 start. Then on Sunday, the Dogs will host the Val-d'Or Foreurs, who currently sit second in the Western Conference.
