The Gatineau Olympiques looked much more like their usual selves on Wednesday at TD Station, defeating the Sea Dogs 6-0 to take a 3-1 lead in the first round best-of-seven series. Gatineau can book a trip to the second round with a victory over the Sea Dogs in Friday's Game 5 at TD Station.
Alexis Gendron netted a hat trick for Gatineau while singles came from Cam MacDonald, Riley Kidney and Zach Dean. Dean and Antonin Verreault each had two assists.
Francesco Lapenna wasn't tested too much, making 26 saves in the shutout victory.
Similar to Game 1, Ventsislav Shingarov kept the Sea Dogs in the game for as long as he could but, eventually, the Olympiques were too much. Gatineau scored just once on 21 shots in the opening frame but blew things open in the second, scoring four times to take a 5-0 lead.
Penalties were a big problem for Saint John in this one. While there may have been a few questionable calls, the team was far too undisciplined against a loaded team like the Olympiques. Gatineau finished the game 3/8 on the man advantage.
Shingarov allowed five goals on 37 shots through the first two periods. Olivier Brideau played the third and allowed a goal on 10 shots.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without defenseman Jeremie Richard (injury) along with forwards Harrison Ballard (heathy), Luka Benoit (healthy), Nathan Casey (injury) and Sam-Luca Thifault (injury).
GENDRON: Not long after being robbed by Ventsislav Shingarov, Alexis Gendron scored his sixth goal of the series to put Gatineau up 1-0 late in the first. He also scored in the second and third periods to complete the hat trick. Gendron had six shots in the opening frame and 10 in the game.

SMALL CROWD: It was another small crowd at TD Station. Announced attendance was 1,568, only slightly better than the 1,487 that attended Tuesday's game - the smallest playoff crowd in team history (excluding the 2021 COVID playoffs). The team is offering $7 tickets for Friday's Game 5.
NOTES: The Sea Dogs went with the same lineup as Tuesday... Gatineau forward Cole Cormier was suspended for this game after receiving a match penalty for a slew foot on Peter Reynolds in Tuesday's contest... an Antonin Verreault goal with 5:14 remaining in the first period was called back after review due to goaltender interference... Gatineau native Olivier Brideau made his second appearance of the series, playing the third period just like he did in Game 2... Jacob Beaulieu had another eventful game, earning three separate unsportsmanlike conduct misconducts. The rookie forward also had seven hits... this was Francesco Lapenna's second shutout of the series... Nicolas Bilodeau, Saint John's other Gatineau native, had four shots... Saint John won just 26 of 64 faceoffs... dangerous shots were 26-11 in favour of Gatineau... here's the Ventsislav Shingarov save off of Alexis Gendron in the first period.
Shingarov is on another planet right now for the Sea Dogs.
