Notebook: Let's talk ECHL playoffs

The Florida Everblades are one win away from hoisting the ECHL's Kelly Cup.

While he's only appeared in one playoff game, the Everblades' roster does include former Sea Dogs defenseman Olivier LeBlanc. The 27-year-old, who also spent three seasons at UNB before turning pro, appeared in 10 regular season games with Florida, recording one assist.

This past season, LeBlanc also played 39 games with the ECHL's Kalamazoo Wings and seven matches with the AHL's Cleveland Monsters.

Florida currently leads the Idaho Steelheads 3-0 in the best-of-seven final heading into Friday night's Game 4. The Steelheads finished first in the ECHL's regular season standings with 58 wins and 119 points. Florida finished with 85 points.

The AHL's Calder Cup final will not feature any former Sea Dogs. That series, which begins Thursday night, will see the Hershey Bears take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

WHERE'D THEY COME FROM?
The Sea Dogs, at this time, will select three times in the second round of Saturday's QMJHL Entry Draft. None of those picks, however, are their own.

Here's where each came from:

  • Round 2, 30th overall — originally Baie-Comeau's, the Sea Dogs acquired the pick in the deal that sent Marshall Lessard to the Drakkar last fall.
  • Round 2, 33rd overall — originally Moncton's, the Sea Dogs acquired the pick in the deal that sent Connor Trenholm to the Wildcats during this past season's holiday trade period.
  • Round 2, 40th overall — originally Quebec's, the Sea Dogs acquired this pick from the Gatineau Olympiques on Wednesday to wrap up the Cam MacDonald deal that was made during the holiday trade period.

Saint John's first round pick (fourth overall) in this year's draft is currently in the hands of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, who acquired the selection in a major trade with the Val-d'Or Foreurs on Wednesday. Saint John's original second round pick (24th overall) is currently owned by the Cape Breton Eagles.

PARE SIGNS AHL DEAL
Former Sea Dogs forward Cedric Pare has signed an AHL deal with the Colorado Eagles for the 2023-24 season, the club announced Wednesday.

Pare has jumped between the AHL and ECHL since turning pro but spent the majority of this past season in the AHL. In 42 games with the Eagles, the 24-year-old recorded eight goals and 13 assists and added another four goals and two assists in seven playoff games.

Pare also appeared in four games with the AHL's Belleville Senators and nine matches with the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers in 2022-23.

Former Sea Dogs captain Spencer Smallman also spent this past season with the Eagles. Smallman and Pare won a President Cup together in Saint John in 2017.

BIG MAD
A lot of people (mostly OHL and WHL followers) weren't too happy with the QMJHL's tweet following Sunday's Memorial Cup final.
Some people simply can't handle the QMJHL's dominance. Sad!

BIG NUMBERS
Again, I'm not really sure what to make of TV numbers anymore, but these numbers for the Memorial Cup final on RDS seem very good.
THE OTHER POIRIER
A defenseman named Jeremy Poirier — not Jeremie Poirier — is eligible for this year's QMJHL Entry Draft.
The Sea Dogs will select fourth and 22nd overall, respectively, in this year's American draft.

OTHER THINGS
  • There is another QMJHL trade period Friday morning. Trades will also be allowed throughout Saturday's Entry Draft.
  • As is the norm on draft weekend, the QMJHL commissioner will hold a press conference on Friday at 1:30 p.m. Atlantic in Sherbrooke. This is Mario Cecchini's first draft as commissioner.
  • Some of the new benefits for Halifax Mooseheads season ticket holders include the "ability to exchange tickets online" and the "ability to resell tickets on a verified market." This comes after a wild year of resale demand during the world juniors and Mooseheads playoffs.
  • Patrick Roy will not be the next head coach of the New York Rangers.
  • It's been a busy few days for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. The team announced a new ownership structure and fired head coach Bruce Richardson. The Armada are scheduled to pick third overall on Saturday.
  • There is once again speculation that the WHL's Winnipeg Ice could be on the move to Chilliwack, BC. The latest report has the owners of the Vancouver Canucks purchasing the club and relocating the team back to BC. Chilliwack lost the WHL's Bruins to Victoria in 2011.
