Notebook: Jones died in motorcycle accident

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
Creed Jones died in a motorcycle accident on Friday, CBC News has confirmed.

The death of the former Saint John Sea Dogs goaltender was announced over the weekend. The 24-year-old was one of two people killed in the crash late Friday in the Ottawa area.

The Sea Dogs have released the below statement.
Jones also played with the Rimouski Oceanic and Gatineau Olympiques during his time in the QMJHL. The Olympiques announced Monday that they will honour Jones during their game against the Oceanic on Sept. 28.

ST. STEPHEN TICKETS
Tickets are now on sale for Saint John's pre-season opener, which will take place Aug. 20 at St. Stephen's Garcelon Civic Centre.

Tickets cost $15 for adults and $10 for youths and seniors. Tickets can be purchased here.

This will be Saint John's first game of the 2024 pre-season. They'll be facing the Charlottetown Islanders in the first of back-to-back games between the two. The Sea Dogs travel to Pownal, PEI the next night to face the Islanders again.

BASKETBALL IS BACK
Another attempt to get professional basketball back in Saint John is well underway.

Last week, it was announced that The Basketball League (TBL) will expand to Saint John for the 2025 season. The team will be called the "Port City Power" and, most notably, will play their home games at the Lord Beaverbrook Rink rather than TD Station.

In a throwback move, Rob Spon, the former head coach of the National Basketball League's Saint John Riptide, will be the Power's head coach and general manager. Former Riptide and Mill Rats star Anthony Anderson was announced as the club's first player signing.

Saint John is currently the league's only Canadian team. The schedule is expected to be released in October.

MIDGLEY TO PWHL
Former Sea Dogs assistant coach Jim Midgley has joined the PWHL Toronto coaching staff.

“I am extremely humbled and honoured to become part of the PWHL Toronto coaching staff,” Midgley said in a news release. “It will be an immense privilege to witness these athletes make history in the hockey industry and pioneer opportunities for future female athletes.”

Midgley was the head coach of the Halifax Mooseheads last season. Prior to that he spent two seasons as an assistant coach with Gerard Gallant's New York Rangers.

Midgley was an assistant coach with the Sea Dogs during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons.

Toronto is coached by Troy Ryan of Spryfield, NS. The two worked together with Team Canada at the 2021 IIHF Women's World Championship.

JURCO TO CHINA
Tomas Jurco will play with Kunlun Red Star of the KHL this coming season.

The former Sea Dogs forward joins the Beijing based club after splitting last season with the Swiss National League's HC Davos and KHL's Avangard Omsk. It'll be Jurco's second stint with Red Star after spending the 2022-23 season with the team.
The 31-year-old has spent the past three seasons overseas. His last appearence at the NHL level came during the 2020-21 season with the Vegas Golden Knights.

Jurco is one of the winningest Sea Dogs of all-time, earning two QMJHL titles, a Memorial Cup, two Calder Cups and an Olympic bronze medal.
