The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League pre-season officially got underway this past weekend with a pair of games between the Victoriaville Tigres and Sherbrooke Phoenix.
Things really get going this coming weekend with lots of games. For the Saint John Sea Dogs, though, they will have to wait just over a week until they open up pre-season play.
The Sea Dogs play their first of five exhibition games on Wednesday, Aug. 26 against the Moncton Wildcats. They'll play two other games later that week as well.
At the time of this writing, Saint John has not released any training camp schedule details. The team has not released its full camp roster yet either but has announced several free agent invites.
The Sea Dogs begin the regular season in just over a month. They'll visit the Newfoundland Regiment on Sept. 18 in what will be the first game of the 2026-27 QMJHL season.
MAGNUSSON NOT AT UCONN
The UConn Huskies men's hockey team unveiled its freshman class last week with a notable omission.
Defenseman Carl-Otto Magnusson, who had previously committed to UConn and was expected to enroll this season, was not listed as part of the class.
It's unclear where Magnusson will play this coming season. The 20-year-old could return to the Sea Dogs but that seems unlikely given that he would take up both an overage and import spot.
The Swede was traded to the Sea Dogs mid-season from the Moncton Wildcats. The defensive defenseman was held pointless in 25 regular season games with Saint John and in three playoff games. He was listed as a healthy scratch for one of the Sea Dogs' post-season matches.
BUS DRIVER WANTED
The Sea Dogs and Coach Atlantic are looking for a bus driver.
"Our partners at Coach Atlantic Group are currently hiring a Motorcoach Driver for our team bus," the Sea Dogs write in a Facebook post, noting that a valid Class 1 or Class 2 driver's licence with air brake endorsement is required.
The full job description has been posted through Career Beacon.
"This is more than just a driving position-it's an opportunity to become an important part of a team's success by ensuring players, coaches, and staff travel safely and comfortably throughout the season," states the posting. "You'll represent Coach Atlantic on every trip while delivering the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and customer service."
JOSEPH DRAFT TALK
On last week's episode of FloHockey's Called Up: The Hockey Prospects Podcast, there was a lengthy discussion about Alexis Joseph and his recent struggles at the international level. It will be interesting to see how Joseph starts this season in Saint John.
The conversation starts at 26:00.
FRANCIS SIGNS
Former Sea Dogs forward Ryan Francis has signed with the ECHL's Maine Mariners, the team announced this past week.
The Mariners are affiliated with the Boston Bruins.
The 24-year-old spent last season with the ECHL's Atlanta Gladiators where he posted seven goals and 23 assists in 68 games.
Francis has now appeared in 192 career ECHL games, playing with the Gladiators, Trois-Rivieres Lions, Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Adirondack Thunders. He's also played 27 AHL games in his professional career.
Francis spent parts of two seasons with Saint John and helped the team win the Memorial Cup in 2022.
MURPHY TO BOUCTOUCHE
Former Sea Dogs defenseman and long-time professional player Matt Murphy is returning to his home province.
The Bouctouche JC's of the Beausejour Senior Hockey League have announced that Murphy has signed with the club for the 2026-27 season.
The 31-year-old appeared in 32 games with the ECHL's Fort Wayne Komets last season, posting two goals and nine assists.
Murphy turned pro in 2020-21 and has spent much of his time in the AHL and ECHL. He's had a few stops overseas as well.
The Fredericton native played in 37 games with Saint John during the second half of the 2015-16 season and appeared in another 17 playoff contests.
