Huberdeau Named Team QMJHL Captain

No surprise here.

Huberdeau has captained the Saint John Sea Dogs for over a year, has world junior experience, and wore the ‘C’ a few times this summer in the Canada-Russia Challenge, so it’s not a surprise to see him awarded this honour.

The Florida Panthers prospect could not participate in last year’s Subway Super Series because of a broken foot. He currently leads the Sea Dogs in scoring with 11 goals and 12 assists in 18 games.

According to another Canadian Hockey League tweet, Xavier Ouellet, Phillip Danault, and Charles Hudon will be alternate captains.

Game 1 of the Subway Super Series between Team QMJHL and Team Russia is tonight at 8pm in Blainville-Boisbriand. Watch it on Sportsnet.

MISSING IN ACTION: The Sea Dogs were without Olivier LeBlanc, Benjamin Hade, Matthew Highmore, Mackenzie Brown, Pierre Durepos, Spencer Smallman, and Andreas Tsogkas on Sunday afternoon.

Devon Oliver-Dares returned to the Saint John lineup after missing the past two.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs took on The Shawinigan Cataractes on Sunday afternoon for the annual Support The Troops game. The two teams played in front of a crowd of 3,780.

Alex Fournier started in net for Saint John while Marvin Cupper went in for the Cataractes.

FIRST PERIOD

Noah Zilbert took the first penalty of the game as he was sent off for a face off violation at 6:06.

Peter Sakaris went to the box for hooking at 6:50.

The call was cross checking as Stephen MacAulay headed off the ice at 9:16, sending the Dogs back on the penalty kill.

15:06 brought the first goal of the game as Olivier Jodoin of the Cataractes scored.

Seconds later at 15:47, Frederick Gaudreau followed suit and brought the Cataractes score to 2-0.

The Sea Dogs went on the power play as Phil Pietroniro went off to the box for holding at18:56.

SECOND PERIOD

Sebastien Auger replaced Fournier in net as the teams took the ice.

The Cataractes took the first penalty of the period as Zachary Taylor went off for holding at 5:39.

Michael Mastrangelo and Yan Dumontier spent some time in the box for roughing at 10:22.

Jonathan Huberdeau put the Sea Dogs on the board 2-1 as he scored from a sharp angle. Assists went to Ryan Tesink and Jurij Repe. The goal was scored at 10:56.

Jurij Repe headed to the box for tripping at 12:07.

Aidan Kelly had an amazing breakaway but was unfortunately could not connect.

VIDEO: Phillips Has Big Night For Aeros

Quite a game in Oklahoma City last night as Charlie Coyle, Zack Phillips, and the Houston Aeros took on Jordan Eberle, Justin Shultz, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and the rest of the Barons.

The Barons led 3-0 in the third period but the Areos would score three unanswered goals to send it to overtime and eventually a shootout. Phillips assisted on the Aeros final two goals in the third and then scored this beauty in the shootout.

Houston would win the shootout, giving them a come-from-behind 4-3 victory. Full game highlights:

SAINT JOHN – A few months sure can change things in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

It was just last May that the Saint John Sea Dogs and Shawinigan Cataractes were playing in the MasterCard Memorial Cup semi-final. Now, both teams are sitting in the lower half of the standings and have drastically different rosters.

Saint John and Shawinigan meet for the first time this season today at 3pm at Harbour Station.

These two franchises hated each other last year thanks to all the off-ice drama and the fact that they were battling for first place for most of the season. Only a few players remain on each team from last year so it’s hard to say how much hate will carry over. But, it’s probably safe to say neither fan base has forgotten the events on 2011-12.

Both teams now find themselves rebuilding (or “transitioning” as Mike Kelly calls it). Shawinigan’s rebuild is off to a much rougher start than Saint John’s. The Cats enter action today with a 2-13-1-1 record and sit dead last in the overall standings. They are 0-11-1-0 over their past 12 games. They’ve scored just 30 goals this season.

The Cats are on a big time road through the Maritimes. They played Tuesday in Cape Breton, Thursday in PEI, Friday in Moncton, and today in Saint John.

Shawinigan has only a few returning players thanks to trades at the draft and graduation. Frederick Gaudreau leads the team in scoring with 14 points in 17 games.

Saint John sits fourth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 12^th overall in the QMJHL with a record of 9-8-0-0. They are 5-5-0-0 in their last 10 games.

Jonathan Huberdeau still leads the Sea Dogs in scoring with 22 points in 17 games.

Saint John hits the road next weekend for a three-in-three in Quebec.

Sea Dogs Notebook

SUNDAY

The Sea Dogs are back in action on Sunday afternoon at 3pm at Harbour Station. It’s Support Our Troops Day and CAA Family Fun Day. Sunday’s game will also be the last Sea Dogs home game until November 24.

Saint John will take on the Shawinigan Cataractes tomorrow for the first time since the Memorial Cup semi-final. Both teams have dramatically different rosters this season as they both enter the opening stages of a rebuild.

The Sea Dogs are having a much better start to the season than Shawinigan. The Cataractes will enter action tomorrow with a 2-13-1-1 record and sit dead last in the QMJHL.

GALIEV

Former Sea Dog Stanislav Galiev netted the shootout winner in the Hershey Bears 3-2 win over the Springfield Falcons on Friday night. From the Bears blog Sweetest Hockey on Earth:

Into the shootout, both teams scored in the first round of the skills competition to make it 1-1. Jeff Taffe for Hershey tallied in the top of the round, as Matt Calvert answered moments later. It stayed 1-1 into round seven when Stanislav Galiev in his first AHL shootout attempt bombed a slap shot to the top-shelf of the cage.

Galiev has yet to score a goal in regulation time in his AHL career. His has one assist in eight games this season.

HIGHMORE

The Sea Dogs newsletter had a brief article on Matthew Highmore. The forward, who the Sea Dogs selected eighth overall in June’s QMJHL Entry Draft, is still recovering from off-season shoulder surgery.

The Dogs Bytes Newsletter reports that he “has recently started taking part in non-contact drills at practice.”

"It was exciting," said Highmore. "Anytime you can get back onto the ice after a period of time that you haven't been there is always exciting. It felt nice."

There was no mention about when he may make his QMJHL debut.
