SYDNEY, NS - A three-goal first period pushed the Cape Breton Eagles past the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday at Centre 200.

The Eagles opened the scoring just 1:39 into the first and added two more later in the period en route to defeating the Sea Dogs 5-1.

Jamie Glance made it a 3-1 game at 5:54 of the middle frame but just about any chance of a comeback ended when Elias Schneider scored at 16:22 to make it 4-1. Cole Chandler then scored less than a minute later to give the Eagles a commanding 5-1 advantage heading into the third.

The Sea Dogs outshot the Eagles 33-25 – including 15-5 in the final frame – but once again just couldn't come up with enough finish. Saint John was without top line forward Alexis Joseph for a second straight game.

Samuel Meloche, who also started Saturday's game in Saint John, made 20 stops in the loss. The big pre-game storyline was how the Sea Dogs would perform in this game after playing in Saint John the day before – obviously, things could have gone better.

The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Saint John. The Eagles, meanwhile, have now won five straight.

Along with Schneider and Chandler, (who had two goals), Noah Jettelson and Reece Peitzsche scored for Cape Breton. Lucas Beckman made 32 stops and was named the game's first star.

Cape Breton has now won three of the four meetings with Saint John this season.
