Oil Kings Are Kings Of The CHL
The Edmonton Oil Kings are Memorial Cup champions.
The Oil Kings, who booked their ticket to the championship game with a triple-overtime victory in Friday’s semi-final, defeated
the well-rested Guelph Storm 6-3 on Sunday to win the first Canadian Hockey League title
in the franchise’s modern history.
Guelph opened the scoring and had a 2-1 lead after one
but could not contain the determined Oil Kings. Edmonton scored three times in
the second period, added another two in the third, and goaltender Tristan Jarry
did a solid job at keeping the Western Hockey League champs in front.
Jarry made 32 saves in the win while Justin Nichols made
39 in the loss. Henrik Samuelsson was named the game’s first star with two
goals and three assists.
The win was impressive on several fronts, most notably
because of how little rest the Oil Kings had compared to the Storm. Guelph was
also playing in a familiar building in front of plenty of their fans - but it
was not meant to be this year for the OHL champs.
It’s the first Memorial Cup title for the WHL since the
2008 Spokane Chiefs, ending the drought/curse that started after the Chiefs
dropped the trophy and broke it during on-ice celebrations.
Some other notes…
- Val-d’Or goaltender Antoine Bibeau was named the tournament’s top goaltender. He was also the only QMJHL player on the tournament all-star team.
- The Memorial Cup all-star team: Antoine Bibeau, Cody Corbett, Matt Finn, Edgars Kulda, Kerby Rychel, and Henrik Samuelsson.
- The OHL has not won the Memorial Cup since the 2010 Windsor Spitfires. It’s been a rough few years for the league.
- No “Shoot for a Million” contest this year. Worst Memorial Cup ever.
- Not a lot of off-ice drama at this year’s Memorial Cup. That will surely return when the Quebec Remparts host next season.
- And so ends the 2013-14 CHL season. It was okay. Here’s to a better 2014-15.

Oil Kings Eliminate Foreurs
The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s reign as Memorial
Cup champions has come to an end.
Curtis Lazar ended the longest Memorial Cup game in history
with a goal at 2:42 of triple overtime last night, giving the Edmonton Oil Kings a 4-3
victory over the Val-d’Or Foreurs in the national semi-final. The win advances the Western Hockey League champs
to Sunday’s final where they will face the Guelph Storm.
The fact that the Foreurs got this game into overtime was
impressive. The Oil Kings were up 3-1 in the second but a late Randy Gazzola
goal made it 3-2 heading into the third. With 36 seconds left in regulation time, a
Guillaume Gelinas shot from the point got through all kinds in traffic and
Tristan Jarry in the Edmonton net to tie things at 3-3.
Both teams had their chances in overtime. In the second
overtime frame, Val-d’Or had a power play but could not capitalize.
Antoine Bibeau made 50 saves in the loss while Jarry made
46 in the win.
It was a good run for the Foreurs who upset the Halifax
Mooseheads in the QMJHL semi-finals and then the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the
final. The fact that they were a goal away from reaching Sunday’s championship
game has be hard to swallow.
It was also a good run for the QMJHL who, for the first
time since 2010, will not be the home of the national champions. Saint John won
in 2011, Shawinigan in 2012, and Halifax in 2013.
The Storm will be looking to become the first Memorial
Cup champions from Ontario since the 2010 Windsor Spitfires. The Oil Kings will
be looking to bring the trophy back to the WHL for the first time since the 2008 Spokane
Chiefs.

Canada Done; Foreurs In Semis
Canada’s quest for Gold at the IIHF World Championships
came to an end yesterday.
Canada lost 3-2 to Finland in yesterday’s quarter-final,
eliminating them from the tournament. The red and white had a 2-1 lead heading
into the third but could not hang on.
Jonathan Huberdeau didn’t record a shot in 10:09 of ice
time in the loss. He played 5:51 in the third period alone. Huberdeau finished
his first World Championship with one goal and four assists in eight games.
Finland will play the Czech Republic in one semi-final
while Russia will face Sweden in the other.
In other news…
- Felix Schutz ended the World Championships with one assist in five games with Team Germany. The Germans had a 2-5 record at the tournament.
- The Val-d’Or Foreurs take on the Edmonton Oil Kings in the Memorial Cup semi-final tonight at 8pm on Sportsnet. The winner of this game will go on to play the Guelph Storm in Sunday’s championship game. The Foreurs defeated the Oil Kings 4-3 in double-overtime on Tuesday.
- The 2014 London Knights could not replicate what the 2012 Shawinigan Cataractes did a couple years ago – win the Memorial Cup on home ice after a second-round playoff elimination. The Knights’ tournament came to an end on Wednesday with a 7-2 loss to Guelph. They finished with an 0-3 record at this year’s event.
- Nathan Beaulieu had 8:53 of ice time - including 1:11 on the power play - in Montreal's 3-2 overtime win in New York last night
- Simon Despres and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are off to Newfoundland today. They begin their Calder Cup semi-final series against the St. John’s IceCaps on Saturday at Mile One. The Penguins reached the semis after eliminating the Providence Bruins in seven games.

Huberdeau Named Player Of The Game
Jonathan Huberdeau was named Team Canada’s player of the
game in a comeback win over Sweden yesterday.
Canada came back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Sweden 3-2
in overtime at the IIHF World Championships. Huberdeau had an assist and two
shots in 13:02 of ice time. He also had a penalty shot in the first period and
nearly scored a beauty (pictured above).
Huberdeau has a goal and three assists in six games at
the tournament.
Canada, 5-0-1, plays their final preliminary game
tomorrow against Norway.
In other news…
- Former Sea Dogs forward Felix Schutz is also taking part in this year’s tournament. He has an assist in five games with Germany. The IIHF website has an article on him.
- Tomas Jurco’s season came to an end last night as the Grand Rapids Griffins lost 7-1 to the Texas Stars, dropping the series 4-2. Jurco had four shots in the game and ends the playoffs with five goals and two assists in eight games.
- On Saturday, Simon Despres and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defeated the Providence Bruins 3-2. Despres had two shots in the game. The Pens lead the series 3-2 heading into Game 6 tonight in WB/S.
- At the Memorial Cup, the Val-d’Or Foreurs are back in action tonight at 8pm on Sportsnet when they take on the Guelph Storm. The Storm beat Edmonton 5-2 on Saturday and then the Oil Kings defeated London 5-2 last night.

Foreurs Win Memorial Cup Opener
In the opening game of the 2014 Memorial Cup, Antoine Bibeau showed everyone why he was named the QMJHL’s
playoff MVP.
The Val-d’Or Foreurs netminder made 51 saves in a 1-0
shutout victory over the host London Knights. It was a great start to the
tournament for the Foreurs who were the last team to book their ticket to the
CHL’s championship tournament.
Not surprisingly, Anthony Mantha scored Val-d’Or’s only
goal and it proved to be enough for the win. Mantha’s goal came at 16:20 of the
first after be beat the Knights defense and cut through the top of the crease.
London, who hadn’t played in 34 games, had a 27-save
performance from Antony Stolarz in the loss.
Tomorrow, the Edmonton Oil Kings take on the Guelph
Storm. Val-d’Or returns to action on Monday against the Storm.
In other Friday night action…
- The Providence Bruins evened their AHL playoff series at 2-2 with a 3-2 overtime win over Simon Despres and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins tonight. Despres had three shots in the loss.
- The St. John’s IceCaps eliminated Kevin Gagne and the Norfolk Admirals with a 5-2 victory in Game 6 tonight at Mile One. Gagne was a -1 in the loss. He finishes his first full pro season with 22 points in 71 regular season games and an assist in eight playoff games.
- The Texas Stars took a 3-2 series lead over Tomas Jurco and the Grand Rapids Griffins with a 3-2 overtime victory. Jurco had an assist and three shots in the loss. "This series isn't over yet...we just gotta go there and win the next two," Jurco told the Red Wings Twitter after the game.
Notebook: Memorial Cup Begins Tonight
London has not played in 34 days. Val-d’Or clinched the
President’s Cup on Tuesday night in Baie-Comeau. It’s going to a battle between
the rested and the fresh.
Tonight’s game starts at 8pm and can be seen on
Sportsnet.
Over at Yahoo Sports, former Sea Dogs forward and
Memorial Cup veteran Stephen MacAulay offered his advice for those playing in
this year’s tournament.
LEBLANC
Sea Dogs defenseman Olivier LeBlanc was among the players invited to the annual NHL Draft Combine.
According to NHL.com, “Dan Marr, the director of NHL
Central Scouting, is anticipating the attendance of 119 players, including 101
North Americans, at the Combine from May 26-31.”
LeBlanc had seven goals and 26 assists in 56 games this
past season. Saint John has not had a player selected in the NHL Draft since
five were picked in 2011.
THE HABS
Nathan Beaulieu, Gerard Gallant, and the Montreal
Canadiens are off to the Eastern Conference Final after eliminating the Boston Bruins
in Game 7 on Wednesday night. The Habs will face the New York Rangers in the
third-round.
Beaulieu registered his second assist of the playoffs in
Game 7, helping setup Daniel Briere’s goal late in the third period to secure
the win. As you’d expect, Beaulieu didn’t play a whole lot in the game, seeing
just 7:57 of ice time. Milan Lucic did not appear to threaten his life in the
hand shake line, which is great.
Premier David Alward watched at Rocky’s Sports Bar and was
sporting a Beaulieu jersey.
