DOGS DAILY: Remembering The Streak

On Saturday, Dec. 12 the Golden State Warriors’ 28-game winning streak came to an end. It was six years ago Sunday, Dec. 13 that the Saint John Sea Dogs’ 22-game winning streak came to a close.

Six years later, the streak that got the glory days of the Sea Dogs franchise rolling is often forgotten about thanks to all the championships that followed. It’s too bad, really – because the streak was a whole lot of fun.

From a QMJHL press release in 2009:

During their streak, which extended from October 17th until December 12th, Saint John scored 107 goals while allowing a mere 44. The offence was led mainly by Mike Hoffman (36 points and 8 game-winning goals), Nicholas Petersen (31), Michael Kirkpatrick (30) and rookie Stanislav Galiev (25 points). The strong defensive brigade saw its veteran, Yann Sauvé, register a solid +24 differential in addition to gathering 16 points. In nets, veteran Marc-Antoine Gélinas won 15 games, allowing a meagre 1.83 goals per game along with a .933 save percentage. Karel St-Laurent posted the other seven wins.

The streak began on Oct. 17, 2009 with a 3-2 overtime victory over Kirill Kabanov and the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station. It ended on Dec. 13 with a 7-3 loss to the Wildcats at the Moncton Coliseum.

Chabot Survives First Cuts

Thomas Chabot has survived the first round of cuts at Team Canada world junior camp.

Cape Breton Screaming Eagles forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, who is a 2016 draft eligible, was among the first players released by Team Canada today. Forwards Michael Dal Colle, Spenser Watson and defenceman Jakob Chychrun were also cut.

It was also announced that Jake Virtanen has been added to the team’s roster on a loan from the Vancouver Canucks.

Canada plays Belarus on Saturday, the Czech Republic Sunday and Sweden on Dec. 23 in pre-tournament action.

VIDEO: Marsh Scores Unreal Goal

Adam Marsh scored quite a goal in last night's 4-3 Sea Dogs win in Cape Breton. Video of the goal is above, via the Red Wings blog Winging It In Motown.

The Red Wings prospect has 13 goals and 11 assists in 29 games with the Sea Dogs this season.

Imama, Bent Suspensions Announced

Bokondji Imama has played his final game of 2015.

The QMJHL announced this morning that the Sea Dogs forward has been suspended a total of 15 games. The suspension comes “in response to actions taken during the December 11^th game against the Halifax Mooseheads,” says a league press release.

During Friday’s game, Imama left the Sea Dogs bench to try and fight Mooseheads forward Kelly Bent.

The Tampa Bay Lightning prospect has been suspended multiple times throughout his QMJHL career, including a four-game ban last season for abuse of officials.

Imama's suspension is the longest to be handed out this season.

SYDNEY, NS – Following a wild 8-5 loss in Halifax on Friday, the Saint John Sea Dogs bounced back with a 4-3 road victory over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday night.

The first period got off to a great start for Saint John as they carried most of the play. After the Sea Dogs took a penalty at 5:47, it was Mathieu Joseph scoring shorthanded at 6:05 to open the scoring. Phelix Martineau of the Screaming Eagles then took it upon himself to return the favour by scoring a shorthanded marker of his own to even the game at 1-1 at 18:09. Saint John held a decided shot advantage after the opening period, peppering 14 shots at Alexandre Belanger while surrendering just four.

Sam Povorozniouk would get the lead back for the Sea Dogs at the 7:40 mark of the middle frame by tucking one past Belanger. The Dogs got penalized later in the period at 13:58 for taking too long to complete a line change and Michael Joly ,made them pay by tying the game at 2-2 at 14:27. Saint John retook the lead though when Matthew Highmore sent a nice stretch pass to Adam Marsh who scored a highlight reel goal, going between his legs and flipping one past Belanger and giving the Sea Dogs a 3-2 lead after two.

The final frame got off to a great start for the Sea Dogs. After Povorozniouk’s failed wraparound attempt, Joe Veleno jumped on the loose puck and doubled the Sea Dogs’ lead to 4-2 just 1:45 in. Martineau would tally his second of the game during a 5-on-3 power play chance at 8:25 to get the Eagles back within a goal. The Screaming Eagles went all out by pulling Belanger late but the Sea Dogs were able to weather the storm and hang on for the 4-3 victory.
