Notebook: Sea Dogs visit Islanders Friday

The Saint John Sea Dogs will be the first visiting team to hit the Eastlink Centre ice on Friday.

The Sea Dogs will take on the Charlottetown Islanders in the PEI club's home opener. The Islanders held their training camp at UPEI and have played all pre-season and regular season games on the road so far this season due to the Eastlink Centre's lengthy conversion from a COVID-19 testing site back into a hockey rink.
It'll be the second meeting of the season between the two. Charlottetown defeated the Sea Dogs 6-5 in Saint John on Oct. 3 - which was the Dogs' home opener.

The Islanders are 4-1-0-0 while the Sea Dogs are 1-1-1-1.

Following Friday's game, the Sea Dogs host the surprising Acadie-Bathurst Titan, who are 5-0-0-1, on Saturday at TD Station.

DESROCHES RECOGNIZED
Sea Dogs defenseman Charlie DesRoches has been named to the QMJHL's Team of the Week.

DesRoches recorded two assists and was a +3 in Saint John's 5-4 shootout loss in Halifax on Saturday night. He also recorded three shots on goal in the game.

The third-year defenseman has three assists in four games this season.

ROY STAYING HOT
Joshua Roy has been impressive so far this season, recording at least a point in each of the Sea Dogs' four games. Roy has registered three goals and two assists to lead the team in scoring.

Going back to last season, Roy now has points in seven straight regular season games and 13 of his past 14.

DROVER IMPRESSING
If there's anyone on the Sea Dogs that could use a good start to the year, it's Alex Drover.

Drover recorded just three goals and nine points in 59 games last season as he fell down the team's depth chart and fought for playing time. The former first-round pick of the Cape Breton Eagles has shown noticeable improvement early on this year, registering two goals in four games to go along with a lovely shootout marker on Saturday.
"Drover’s resurgence shouldn’t come as a surprise," wrote Rogers TV's Craig Eagles in a blog post this week. "He is one of the most intrinsically motivated and driven players in the entire QMJHL.

"He has a natural ability and knack at finding the back of the net and will do just about anything to help his team have success.

"As they say, 'things happen for a reason.'"

DEAKIN-POOT FEATURED
Former Sea Dogs forward Nicholas Deakin-Poot, who is now a member of the Acadia Axemen, was featured in the QMJHL's alumni spotlight this week.
ORG RANKINGS
Over at The Athletic, one current and two former Sea Dogs were among the players listed in Corey Pronman's organizational rankings of young talent following the NHL Draft.

Here's where the three Sea Dogs were ranked within their organization.

Julien Gauthier - #8 New York Rangers
Jeremie Poirier - #6 Calgary Flames
Joe Veleno - #5 Detroit Red Wings

Of note, Poirier was slotted one spot ahead of former Moncton Wildcat and current Val-d'Or Foreurs forward Jakob Pelletier.
