Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-4

SAINT JOHN - A night after surviving a five-minute major penalty called against them, the Saint John Sea Dogs couldn't do the same on Saturday in Bathurst.

With the Sea Dogs up 4-3 on the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Sam-Luca Thifault was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing at 9:38 of the third period. At 11:57, Alexandre Lallier tied the game and then, on a five-on-three advantage, Joseph Henneberry scored at 13:57 to put Bathurst in front 5-4.

The Titan would hold on to the lead and defeat the Sea Dogs 5-4, ending a five-game losing streak.

Donovan Arsenault netted a first period hat trick for Bathurst and that would be the Titan's only goals until midway through the third. Antoine Keller made 24 saves in the win.

Pavel Simek scored a pair of goals for Saint John while Noah Reinhart and Jacob Beaulieu added singles. Justin Robinson made 33 saves in the loss.

Arsenault scored twice in the first 8:28 of the first period to put Bathurst up 2-0 early. Shots were 10-0 Titan at the midway point of the period.

Simek got Saint John on the board at 12:44 of the first, putting in the rebound of a Vince Elie shot. Arsenault completed his first period hat trick at 19:15, flying around Robinson to put the Titan 3-1 after one.

Reinhart scored midway through the second and then Beaulieu netted his first of the season early in the third to make it a 3-3 game. Simek scored his second of the day at 7:58 of the third to give the Sea Dogs their first and only lead of the game.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without forwards Peter Reynolds (injury), Francis Woods (healthy) and Luka Benoit (injury) along with defensemen Joseph Ianniello (injury) and Benjamin Amyot (healthy).

WELCOME BACK: Forward Sam-Luca Thifault returned from injury, making his season debut. His last game was Feb. 8. Thifault had an assist, one shot and a +1 rating before being ejected from the game for kneeing in the third period.
NOTES: The Titan held a Remembrance Day ceremony before the game... Saint John went back to 12 forwards and six defensemen... with Peter Reynolds out of the lineup, Vince Elie slid up to the top line between Pavel Simek and Eriks Mateiko... it took until 10:23 of the first period for Saint John to record a shot on goal. Shots were 10-0 Bathurst at the time... Nicolas Bilodeau had two assists... Pavel Simek has two goals and three assists over his past two games... Simek had six shots... attendance was 1,385.
