Five Hole for Food Returns Saturday

Five Hole for Food is returning to Saint John on Saturday. Last year’s event was a huge success and hopefully this year’s will be even better.

This year’s event will take place on Smythe Street (beside Harbour Passage Trail) from 3pm to 7pm.

Five Hole for Food is an annual coast to coast tour playing hockey to support food banks across Canada. 

We set up a rink in the heart of each city and invite anyone and everyone to come out to play hockey to fight hunger. Bring your stick, bring a can of food, and have fun. 100% of the proceeds go to the local food bank in each city. 

We're playing road hockey in Saint John to benefit the Community Food Basket of Saint John and we hope you'll join us! 

Things to bring:
1. A food or money donation
2. A hockey stick

THE ICE CAPS
It’s looking more and more likely that Michael Kirkpatrick’s new team will be called the Ice Caps.

The St. John’s Telegram newspaper has been speculating about the new American Hockey League team name for a few weeks now and it’s looking like ‘Ice Caps’ will be the name of the Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate.

As you can see in The Telegram comments section, there are plenty of negative opinions about the name choice. As they point out, there is no escaping the connection between the name and Tim Hortons.

It was announced a few weeks ago that Kirkpatrick, the Saint John Sea Dogs’ all-time leading scorer, had signed a two-year deal with the team formerly known as the Manitoba Moose. On July 1, the Cape Breton Post had article on the North Sydney native signing with the AHL team.

“It was a good deal and to play in St. John’s, it’s pretty close to home and I know some people over there, so it’s going to be a great experience for me,” he said. “I played over there when they had the Fog Devils and it’s a great hockey city.”

NEW MASCOT PERSON
Sea Dogs mascot Fleaburn posted this on his Facebook page yesterday:

Hello all, want to thank everyone for adding me as a friend and for all the pictures and messages you posted over the last 2 years, just wanted to let you know I will be closing this page by next weekend, so once again thanks to you all.

Fleaburn clarified in the comments section that the mascot will be staying but the person inside will be changing.

The fury beast replaced Splash as Sea Dogs mascot at the beginning of the 2009-10 season. Fleaburn quickly became one of the top mascots in the league and was a massive improvement over Splash.

Thanks for your hard work. You will be missed.

DRAFT STUFF
The Chronicle Herald’s Willy Palov was quite impressed with the Sea Dogs showing at the NHL Entry Draft.

Having Nathan Beaulieu (17th, Montreal) and Zack Phillips (28th, Minnesota) also go in the first round, as well as Tomas Jurco (35th, Detroit) early in the second round, made for an incredible showing by the Sea Dogs. Ryan Tesink also went in the sixth round to the St. Louis Blues, giving Saint John five drafted players. It doesn’t get much more impressive than that.

He also noted that Jonathan Huberdeau was the highest QMJHL player taken in the draft since Sidney Crosby went first overall to the Pittsburgh Penguins back in 2005.

FHFF A HUGE SUCCESS

SAINT JOHN – Five Hole for Food’s Saint John tour stop was a huge success.

“After our first three cities we’d raised a total of 2,320 lbs of food and Halifax had set the 2011 standard to beat at 795 lbs of food raised,” states the FHFF website. “The challenge every year is for each city to top the city before it and Saint John wasted no time doing so as the day yielded 4,210 lbs of food! The effort from Saint John not only set the new benchmark for 2011, but it topped our previous single city high dating back to last summer when Vancouverites came out to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society with 3,000 lbs of food!”

Mayor Ivan Court, Saint John Sea Dogs president Wayne Long and other members of the Sea Dogs front office took part in some of the road hockey games held yesterday afternoon on Long Wharf.

The food raised was donated to Community Food Basket of Saint John.

After stops in St. John’s, Charlottetown, and Halifax, Five Hole for Food has raised 6,530 lbs of food for local food banks. Their goal is to reach 20,000 lbs by the end of their cross Canada trek.

FIVE HOLE FOR FOOD VISITS SJ TODAY

SAINT JOHN – Five Hole for Food visits the city this afternoon.

The group of hockey enthusiasts make their only New Brunswick appearance from 12-6 pm today at Long Wharf. Bring a can food. Bring a hockey stick. Support the Community Food Basket of Saint John and play some ball hockey. That’s how it works.

This is the fourth stop on their cross Canada tour. So far they have played in St. John’s, Halifax, and Charlottetown. They will head to Montreal after their game in Saint John today.

They began their cross country tour Thursday in St. John’s, played in Halifax Saturday, and will visit Charlottetown Sunday.
