Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-3

SAINT JOHN - A unusually hot start wasn't enough for the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday night.

The Sea Dogs blew a 2-0 first period lead in a 5-3 loss to the Halifax Mooseheads at TD Station. The win pushed the Mooseheads five points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the overall standings as the teams battle for the final two playoff spots.

Saint John led 2-0 just 4:50 into the game but couldn't maintain that offensive pace, recording just 10 dangerous shots in the contest. In the third period and trailing 4-3, Saint John had a lengthy five-on-three power play but could not net an equalizer.

Quinn Kennedy, who missed last Thursday's game in Saint John with an illness, scored a hat trick for the Mooseheads while Antoine Fontaine and Shawn Carrier added singles. Jacob Steinman made 19 saves in the win.

Ben Cross scored twice for Saint John while defenseman Matthew MacLean – playing as a forward – added a solo marker. Eric Young made 30 saves in the loss.

These two meet again on Saturday night in Halifax where another two critical points will be on the line.

Sea Dogs to wear wrestling inspired jerseys

It's Wrestling Night at TD Station and the Saint John Sea Dogs will look the part.

The Sea Dogs will be wearing "nWo" inspired black jerseys when they take on the Halifax Mooseheads at 7 p.m. The "nWo" has replaced by "sNb," which is the club's short form name in the QMJHL (not Service New Brunswick).

Game Day 59: vs Mooseheads

SAINT JOHN - Another big weekend is here for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs enter the weekend sitting outside the QMJHL's playoff picture, sitting 17th overall with 40 points. They're just two points back of the 16th-place Gatineau Olympiques and three back of the 15th-place Halifax Mooseheads.

It's those Mooseheads who will be Saint John's opponent this weekend. They'll meet Friday night at 7 p.m. at TD Station and Saturday at Scotiabank Centre.

The Sea Dogs are 3-3-0-0 against the Mooseheads this season – which includes a win just last week. This is a pair of huge games for both rebuilding clubs.

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 6-2 loss in Cape Breton on Sunday. Ben Cross and Mitchell Wagner scored Saint John's lone goals. Eric Young made 39 saves in the loss. The Mooseheads are coming off a 4-3 overtime loss in Bathurst last Friday. Callum Aucoin scored a pair of goals for the Moose while Braeden MacPhee added a single. Nicolas Gillham-Cirka made 38 stops in the loss.

SYDNEY, NS - The road woes continued for the Saint John Sea Dogs on Sunday.

The Sea Dogs once again fell into a 2-0 hole and could never bounce back, falling 6-2 to the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200. The two battled the night before as well where Cape Breton won 6-3.

Ben Cross and Mitchell Wagner scored Saint John's goals. It was a similar storyline to Saturday where the Sea Dogs fell into a hole early, managed to get back into the game but let momentum slip back into Cape Breton's favour.

Eric Young, who also played Saturday night, made 39 saves in the loss.

Saint John has now lost eight straight road games. With six games remaining, the Sea Dogs are two points back of the Gatineau Olympiques for the 16th and final playoff spot.

Cape Breton had goals from six different players: Cole Burbidge, Luke Patterson, Xavier Daigle, Romain Litalien, Brayden Schmitt and Cam Squires. Alexis Cournoyer made 30 saves in the win.

SYDNEY, NS - After ending an 11-game losing streak on Thursday, the Saint John Sea Dogs ran into their old problems on Saturday.

The Sea Dogs fell behind 2-0 in the first period and could never fully dig themselves out of the hole, falling 6-3 to the Cape Breton Eagles at Centre 200.

Saint John trailed 2-1 after the first period thanks to a breakaway goal from Tyler Peddle at 16:57 of the opening frame. But the Eagles scored two more times in the second to grab a 4-1 lead.

The Sea Dogs were able to make a game out of it thanks to goals from Zachary Morin and Olivier Groulx, cutting the deficit to 4-3. Roman Litalien's goal at 2:33 of the third then provided some insurance for Cape Breton.

Litalien and Joseph Henneberry each netted a pair of goals for Cape Breton while Brayden Schmitt and Tomas Lavoie added singles. Jakub Milota made 38 saves in the win.

Eric Young made 40 stops in the loss.

The Sea Dogs have now dropped seven straight road games heading into their rematch with the Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Game Day 57 & 58: at Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - Just eight regular season games remain for the Saint John Sea Dogs – and half of those will be against the Cape Breton Eagles.

The Sea Dogs visit the Eagles for a pair of games this weekend. The two will battle Saturday night at 7 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Cape Breton will visit Saint John March 21-22 to close out the regular season.

Saint John is coming off a 4-2 home win over the Halifax Mooseheads, a victory that ended an 11-game losing streak. The Dogs have lost six straight road games entering this weekend.
