World juniors begin today

The 2018 World Junior Hockey Championship begins today in Buffalo.

There are two Saint John Sea Dogs taking part in this year's tournament: forward Ostap Safin and defenceman Radim Salda. Both players will be skating for the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic will be playing in Group B with Russia, Sweden, Belarus and Switzerland. Most project the team to finish third in the group behind Sweden and Russia.

Here's a look at the team's schedule, which will be played entirely at Buffalo's Key Bank Center. All games will be broadcast on TSN.

Dec. 26 at 1 p.m. vs Russia
Dec. 28 at 5 p.m. vs Sweden
Dec. 30 at 1 p.m. vs Belarus
Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. vs Switzerland

The world juniors end on Jan. 5, meaning the Sea Dogs will be without their two imports until then - at the latest.

Safin, an Edmonton Oilers prospect, has 13 goals and 19 assists in 33 games with Saint John this season.
Salda is 11th in QMJHL rookie scoring with six goals and 16 assists in 33 games.

The Czechs also feature Halifax Mooseheads star forward Filip Zadina.
