RIMOUSKI - The Moncton Wildcats are on the brink of elimination while the Acadie-Bathurst Titan are a win away from the second round.
The Wildcats went down 3-2 in their series with the Rimouski Oceanic last night, losing a close game that ended with a 5-2 score. Samuel Dove-McFalls had a goal and an assist for Rimouski while Chase Stewart had an assist. Game 6 is Sunday in Moncton.
In Bathurst, the Titan defeated the pesky Chicoutimi Sagueneens 4-1 to take a 3-2 series lead. Game 6 is on Sunday in Chicoutimi.
The Charlottetown Islanders will look to take a 3-2 series lead this afternoon at Eastlink Centre. The Isles evened up their series with the Remparts last night with a 4-2 win. Today's match will be the final game of the series played in Charlottetown.
The only other series still going in Sherbrooke/Rouyn-Noranda. The Huskies took a 3-2 series lead last night with a 4-1 home win. Luke Green remains out of the Phoenix lineup.
Elsewhere, Halifax won their series against Baie-Comeau 4-1, Blainville-Boisbriand swept Val-d'Or 4-0, Drummondville eliminated Cape Breton 4-1 and Victoriaville moved on with a 4-1 series win over Gatineau.

Draft lottery details announced
Details have been released on this year's Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft lottery.
The draw, which will feature teams that finished in the bottom five of the league's overall standings (or the teams that hold those picks), will take place on Thursday, April 5 at 8 p.m. AST at TVA studios in Montreal. The event will air on TVA Sports.
Below are the odds each team has:
Of note, the Sea Dogs, who finished last, can not finish lower than third. While the odds are obviously in their favouring in terms of picking first or second, they could fall down to No. 3, which happened to the Moncton Wildcats last year.
Here is some more info, from a league press release:
The Sea Dogs have won every draft lottery they have taken part in previously - however, this will be the first time they take part in the five team process, rather than the two team format.
Saint John has selected first overall five times in team history - an incredible amount given the success the team has had in such a short period.
The 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft takes place on Saturday, June 2 in Shawinigan.

After the team which will select during the first rank of the entry draft is determined, all the balls representing the team involved are removed from the draw. This process is repeated each time a team is drawn. However, if the Saint John Sea Dogs who finished last in the standing are not picked during the first or the second lottery draw, they will automatically be awarded the third draft pick overall. Equally, if according to the process described previously, the team that finished at the last rank is awarded automatically the third draft pick overall, or was selected during the first or the second draw, while the Shawinigan Cataractes who finished next to last have not yet been selected, then they will be automatically awarded the fourth draft pick overall.

Playoff Update: The playoffs are still good
Folks, this isn't your grandfather's first round.
The days of eight lopsided first round series seem to be over (for now at least) as five of this year's are tied up after two games. Even the three series that are 2-0 have had their close moments.
As mentioned on Friday, hopefully this is an early sign of things to come. Even with the Saint John Sea Dogs not involved, who doesn't love some good playoff hockey?
Here's a look at each series after two games.
Armada 2 - Foreurs 0
The Armada had their troubles in Game 1, needing overtime to defeat the No. 16 seed Foreurs. They seemed to figure things out in Game 2, winning 5-1. The series now shifts to Val-d'Or, where there will surely be a good atmosphere.
Titan 1 - Sagueneens 1
The Titan are the heavy favourites in this series, but suffered one of their worst loses in months on Saturday, falling 4-0 to the No. 15 seed Sagueneens on hime ice. Bathurst was good enough, but not great, in Game 1. We've seen the Chicoutimi franchise play the upset role in the past, so the Titan will need to be careful here. This is a 2-2-1-1-1 scheduling format.
Oceanic 1 - Wildcats 1
Another surprising series has been Wildcats/Oceanic, where Rimouski, the No. 3 seed, could easily be down 2-0 right now. After pulling off a big 4-1 upset win in Game 1, Moncton nearly took Game 2 but fell 2-1 in overtime. Alexis Lafreniere, who most guessed would be a Wildcat at this point a year ago, scored the overtime winner. Samuel Dove-McFalls assisted on both Rimouski goals.

Playoff Update: We're off to a good start

The President Cup playoffs are off to an entertaining start.
The playoffs have only been rolling for a couple days but, if those days are an indication of things to come, this could be a fun post-season.
Friday night was highlighted by the Moncton Wildcats upsetting the heavily favoured Rimouski Oceanic in Game 1, winning 4-1. The Oceanic are the No. 3 seed while the Wildcats are No. 14.
Here's a breakdown of Friday's action:

Friday night was highlighted by the Moncton Wildcats upsetting the heavily favoured Rimouski Oceanic in Game 1, winning 4-1. The Oceanic are the No. 3 seed while the Wildcats are No. 14.
Here's a breakdown of Friday's action:
- Alexis Lafreniere was held pointless by the Wildcats in the Oceanic loss. Rimouski captain Samuel Dove-McFalls had one assist. Chase Stewart will likely have to sit out Saturday's Game 2 after being given an aggressor game misconduct in the first period.
- Bathurst went down early but didn't have much trouble after that, recording a 3-1 win over the Chicoutimi Sagueneens to take a 1-0 series lead. Big crowd of 2,815 on hand.
- The Halifax Mooseheads beat the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5-2 in Game 1 of that series. The Drakkar scored first and ended up outshooting Halifax 38-26 - thanks mostly to seven power play opportunities. Alexis Gravel had a good night in net.
- As expected, the Victoriaville Tigres had little trouble with the Gatineau Olympiques, taking Game 1, 7-2. Gatineau only had 17 shots on goal. Vitalii Abramov had a million points to make Olympiques fans suffer a bit more.
- After a Game 1 scare, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada had little trouble with the Val-d'Or Foreurs in Game 2, winning 5-1. Samuel Leblanc had two shots for the Armada. The Armada lead the series 2-0.
- Joe Veleno was held pointless in the Drummondville Voltigeurs' 5-2 Game 1 win over the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Declan Smith had an assist for Cape Breton.
- There was another upset on Friday - but a much minor one - with the No. 10 Sherbrooke Phoenix defeating the No. 7 Rouyn-Noranda Huskies 2-1 in Game 1. The Phoenix have never won a playoff series.
- The Charlottetown/Quebec series begins on Saturday at Videotron Centre.

Seven Sea Dogs alumni win U Sports medals
FREDERICTON - Former Saint John Sea Dogs forward Mark Tremaine and the StFX X-Men suffered another heart breaking loss in the gold medal game of the University Cup.
After falling in the gold medal game to the UNB Varsity Reds in 2016, Tremaine and the X-Men fell once again this year, losing 4-2 to the Alberta Golden Bears.
In his three-year career with the X-Men, Tremaine now has two Atlantic University Sport titles and two U Sports silver medals.
The loss came 24 hours after a thrilling 5-4 overtime win over the rival Varsity Reds in the national semifinal. Tremaine had an assist in that game.
Five former Sea Dogs won bronze medals with the Varsity Reds, who defeated the Saskatchewan Huskies 5-4 in overtime in Sunday morning's third-place game. Mike Thomas, Stephen Anderson, Matt Murphy, Olivier LeBlanc and Oliver Cooper all picked up hardware.
Cooper did not play in the tournament, but the other four all made an impact. LeBlanc perhaps had the biggest impact - in a negative way, unfortunately - as he took a momentum swinging and controversial kneeing major in Saturday's semifinal.
Tremaine, Cuomo, Anderson, Murphy, LeBlanc and Cooper are all eligible to return to their teams/schools in the fall. For Thomas, this was his final year of eligibility, capping off what has been a little over a decade of having a prominent hockey presence in the province.
Thomas will no doubt be featured in the near future in the Sea Dogs' new Hall of Fame.

Sea Dogs have best odds of landing top pick
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will have the best odds of landing the first overall pick in the 2018 QMJHL Entry Draft.
With a loss on Saturday in Cape Breton, the Sea Dogs officially finished last overall in the 18-team Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. Unlike past seasons when the Sea Dogs missed the post-season, there will be an actual lottery rather than a coin flip or 50/50 odds.
Under the new system, which began last year, the 18th place team will have nine chances of winning the first overall pick, 17th place will have six, 16th will have three, 15th will have two and 14th will have one.
Previously, only the bottom two teams had a chance at landing the first pick. Saint John won every time they took part in that format.
The move was made to reduce teams tanking. It certainly worked as the last-place Moncton Wildcats, who tanked, ended up picking third last year while the 16th-place Rimouski Oceanic picked first.
The draft lottery will be held around the first week of April, so the Sea Dogs will know where they are picking soon.
Saint John also owns Gatineau's first round pick in this year's draft, which will be eighth.

Kevin Mandolese had seven saves on nine shots in the first two periods and rookie Ryan Miller added another seven saves on eight shots in the final frame.
Rookie defenceman Brendan Sibley led Saint John with a goal - his first in the QMJHL - and an assist, while Robbie Burt and Cole Reginato also scored for the Sea Dogs. Rookie netminder Tommy DaSilva - a former Screaming Eagle draft choice - had 32 saves in defeat.

Game Day 68: at Cape Breton
SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs close out the 2017-18 season this afternoon in Sydney.
The Sea Dogs will play their final game of the campaign at 4 p.m. at Centre 200 against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. It will be the second meeting between the two in less than 24 hours after the Screaming Eagles edged the Sea Dogs 3-2 last night.
The Sea Dogs must win today to avoid setting the team record for fewest wins in a season. On the flip side, a win today may push the Dogs into 17th overall, which would slightly decrease the odds of landing the first overall pick.

University Cup begins today
FREDERICTON - The University Cup begins today at UNB's Fredericton campus.
Eight teams will be competing for the U Sports national men's hockey championship. Quarterfinal action takes place today and Friday; the semifinals are on Saturday; and the bronze and gold medal games take place on Sunday.
Saturday's semifinals and Sunday's final will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet 360.
Several former Sea Dogs will be taking part in the tournament again this year - and all of them will be in action today. Here's who will be playing:
Today's games feature the No. 4 Brock Badgers taking on the No. 5 StFX X-Men at 1 p.m. The 7 p.m. contest will see the host and No. 1 seeded UNB Varsity Reds take on the No. 8 Concordia Stingers. Friday's quarterfinals will feature the Alberta Golden Bears (2) taking on the Acadia Axemen (7) at 1 p.m. and the McGill Redmen (3) facing the Saskatchewan Huskies (6) at 7 p.m.
UNB is considered the favourite - but not my a whole lot. The Golden Bears are always good, and the X-Men - who are seeded low because they didn't win their conference - are certainly contenders as well.
The Varsity Reds, who feature a ridiculous (in a good way) five former Sea Dogs, will be looking to win their third straight University Cup championship.

Maritimes Division still unsettled
While the bottom of the Maritimes Division has been solidified, the top is still very much up for grabs.
The Saint John Sea Dogs will finish last in the division this season after finishing first the past two. With their loss on Saturday, the Sea Dogs confirmed their position outside the league's playoff picture and will finish either 17th or 18th overall.
This will be the first time since 2014 that the Sea Dogs have missed the playoffs and the fourth time in franchise history.
The top of the Maritimes Division is still uncertain as we enter the final week of the regular season. The Acadie-Bathurst Titan pulled two points ahead of the Halifax Mooseheads for top spot with a huge 3-2 home win on Saturday in front of a national television audience.
Both the Titan and Mooseheads have three games remaining on their schedules. Here's a look at what's left for them:
Halifax definitely has the easier schedule, but the fact that there is still one head-to-head meeting remaining makes things a lot more fun.
The Charlottetown Islanders will finish third in the Maritimes while the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles will finish fourth and the Moncton Wildcats fifth.
The Blainville-Boisbriand Armada will finish first overall in the league and will have home ice advantage throughout the playoffs.

Dixon suspended two games for stick toss
Saint John Sea Dogs head coach Josh Dixon will miss two of his team's final three games.
The QMJHL announced on Sunday that Dixon has been suspended for two games for "inappropriate behaviour." Saint John, eliminated from playoff contention, has three games remaining on their schedule, all of which are road games.
The incident took place late in Saturday's Sea Dogs loss to the Moncton Wildcats. After a controversial penalty was called against Saint John - which essentially ended any chance of the Sea Dogs tying the game - Dixon began yelling at an official, eventually breaking a stick over the boards and tossing it on the ice.

Dixon is very mild mannered, and was even praised by president and general manager Trevor Georgie in a Rogers TV interview on the weekend for being a calm presence on the bench. His actions were certainly surprising - but most Sea Dogs followers seemed to like their coach displaying some visible signs of emotion.
Dixon, in his first year with the club, and the entire Sea Dogs coaching staff will no doubt be evaluated once the season ends this Saturday.
Jeff Cowan will presumably operate the Sea Dogs bench in Dixon's absence.

Sea Dogs nearing team records they probably don't want to set
Things have not gone well for the Saint John Sea Dogs this season.
With six games remaining in their season, the Sea Dogs need a miracle to make the playoffs. It's probably for the best that they don't, improving their chances of landing the first overall pick and avoiding a steamrolling by the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada in the opening round.
Saint John's season has been bad - historically bad. The Sea Dogs need to win two of their six remaining games just to tie the franchise record for fewest wins in a season. They need three to move ahead of the mark.
Historically, the Sea Dogs have always been solid on home ice. That has not been the case this season as the team is nearing the worst home record in franchise history.
Here's a breakdown of Saint John's overall and home records through the years.

The "loser points" the Sea Dogs have earned this year have at least helped the team's point total. Saint John has lost an incredible nine times in overtime, which ties them with the 1985-86 Longueuil Chevaliers and 2015-16 Moncton Wildcats for the second most in league history.
While the Sea Dogs' numbers are bad, they are not overly surprising. This is a team that is essentially in year zero of a rebuild; they traded away their captain; they lost their two top offensive players for a month at the world juniors; and they have been hit by the injury bug more than any other Sea Dogs team in recent memory.
There is really nowhere to go but up from this season.
