Mooseheads stun Voltigeurs again

The Halifax Mooseheads have done it again.

After pulling off a 3-2 upset win over the Drummondville Voltigeurs in Game 1 on Friday, Quispamsis native Liam Kilfoil scored the overtime winner to give Halifax another 3-2 win and a 2-0 series lead on Saturday at the Marcel Dionne Centre.
The series now shifts to Halifax for the next three games – if that Game 5 is even needed.

Drummondville had the third best record during the QMJHL's regular season while Halifax finished 16th. The start of this series has been nothing short of stunning.

Halifax took a 2-1 lead on a Braeden MacPhee goal just 54 seconds into the third period and carried that into the final minute. With the goaltender pulled, Saint John native Sam Oliver – the QMJHL's leading goal scorer in the regular season – beat Jacob Steinman upstairs to tie it at 2-2. But that goal underwent a long review before eventually being overturned for goaltender interference.

Then, with 38 seconds remaining, Oliver scored again – this time on a legal play – to send things into overtime.

Kilfoil's winner came at 16:40 of overtime on a power play. Simon-Pier Brunet was called for delay of game at 15:22.

Steinman was named the game's first star with 45 saves. Louis-Felix Charrois – who got the start with Riley Mercer injured in Game 1 – made 24 saves in the loss.

Game 3 is Tuesday night at Scotiabank Centre.

It was another busy night of playoff hockey. Here's a quick recap of Saturday's other action.
  • After not getting the start in Game 1, Rudy Guimond made 33 saves in a 4-0 Wildcats shutout win over the Remparts to take a 2-0 series lead. The game was scoreless after two but Moncton had a big third period, breaking the ice two minutes in and then doubling their lead after a review at 13:00. It hasn't been an easy series for the top-ranked Wildcats, who needed overtime to win Game 1 on Friday. There was some fun stuff at the end of the game.
  • Bathurst is coming home down 2-0 following a 2-0 loss in Chicoutimi. The Sags scored twice just over a minute apart in the third period. The next three games – if all are needed – will be at the KC Irving Regional Centre and could be the final QMJHL games played in Bathurst.
  • Former Sea Dogs captain Eriks Mateiko had a goal and nine shots in Rimouski's 10-0 blowout win over Charlottetown. Jacob Mathieu had three goals and three assists. Rimouski leads the series 2-0.
  • Noah Reinhart had a goal in Val-d'Or's 5-2 loss to Shawinigan. Faceoffs were 41-17 in favour of the Foreurs. Shawinigan leads that series 2-0.
  • Baie-Comeau took a 2-0 series lead over Cape Breton with a 5-2 win.
  • Rouyn-Noranda edged Gatineau 2-1 to take a 2-0 series lead. Gatineau went 0/7 on the power play.
  • Boston University is Frozen Four bound for a third straight year after beating Cornell 3-2 in overtime on Saturday in Toledo. St. John's native Ryan Greene had two assists for BU – including one of Quinn Hutson's OT winner.
  • Western Michigan also secured a Frozen Four spot after defeating UMass 2-1. It'll be the first Frozen Four appearance for the Kalamazoo based Broncos, who also won their first conference championship this year.
  • The schedules have been released for the Maritime Hockey League playoff division finals. Truro will face Pictou County while Edmundston will take on Campbellton.
