Joseph scored six times – with one coming in a shootout and another two being empty netters – to help Team Smallman defeat Team Thomas on Sunday morning at the qplex.
Playing three 10-minute games of four-on-four hockey, Joseph scored on his first shift, carrying the puck in from the blue line and cutting into the top of the crease. It's evident his size and strength are a step above where most players are when they enter the league at 16.
Cole Renaud scored for Team Thomas to send the first 10-minute game into a shootout. Joseph scored a beautiful shootout goal but Team Thomas took the win thanks to Renaud and Olivier Groulx converting on their attempts.
Joseph scored again in the second game – this time on a rebound – to get Team Smallman on the board. Dylan Krayer evened things up, forcing another shootout. Cameron Chartrand and Julien Lacroix scored to give Team Smallman the edge.
Dylan Krayer netted Team Thomas' lone goal. Joseph was used in the shootout again but was stopped by Jase MacPherson.
Matas Janulis gave Team Thomas a 1-0 lead in the third and final game. But Madison Bouchard – on a setup by Joseph – evened things up and then Joseph scored again to make it 2-1 for Team Smallman. The first overall pick then scored two empty netters to make the third game a 4-1 final, which also gave Team Smallman the intrasquad victory.
All three goaltenders who were in attendance – MacPherson, Rafael Courchesne and Sam Pitcher – were used in the game.
Sunday morning's event concluded the three-day development camp. The Sea Dogs are the only QMJHL team holding such a camp this year.
The players and team now have several weeks to prepare for main training camp, which will presumably open the third weekend of August. Saint John's first pre-season game is Aug. 19 against the Moncton Wildcats in Dieppe.
