QUEBEC CITY, Que. – The Sherbrooke Phoenix roster began
to take shape this morning as they selected 28 players in the 2012 Expansion Draft.
The Phoenix could take up to two players and a maximum of
one goaltender from each team. The other 17 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
teams submitted lists of 16 players to protect. Those who were
unprotected could be picked by the expansion club.
Sherbrooke selected two Saint John Sea Dogs prospects in
the draft, picking up US prep school defensemen Marc Biega and Ryan Segalla. Both
were late picks of the Sea Dogs in last year’s QMJHL Entry Draft. It’s not a
huge loss for Saint John given that it was unknown if either would ever report.
Biega, a Montreal native who turns 18 today, played at Salisbury School
last season and was team captain. He recorded six goals and 30 assists in 28
games, according to the QMJHL website. He was expected to head to Harvard like his brothers did but apparently did not get in.
Segalla, an 18-year old Massachusetts native, also played
at Salisbury last season, registering six goals and six assists in 28 contests.
With the expansion draft now over, teams can begin
looking forward to Friday’s trade period. Sherbrooke should be quite active
during that as well.
The 2012 QMJHL Entry Draft is on Saturday morning.
