CapeBretonEagles.com’s recap. Two third period goals in a
span of 13 seconds was the difference as the Saint John Sea Dogs defeated the
Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 4-2 in front of 4,114 fans on hand at Harbour
Station on Wednesday.
SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Brett Malone
(healthy), Justin Dickinson (left team – personal reasons), Steven Duda
(healthy), and Jeremy Doucet (healthy) on Wednesday night.
SCORING FIRST: The Eagles opened the scoring at 4:22 of
the first as Clark Bishop netted his sixth of the season. Cape Breton fell to
8-9-2-4 when scoring first on the year. Meanwhile, Saint John and Sherbrooke
have scored first in just 20 games this season, a league low.
HIGHMORE: Matthew Highmore, celebrating his 17th
birthday, had quite a game. The rookie forward recorded two goals, an assist,
four shots, and a +3 rating to earn first star honours. He now has four goals
and four assists in 22 games this season. This was his first multi-goal game.
DONAGHEY: Connor Donaghey, celebrating his 19th
birthday, had a goal, two assists, four shots, and a +3 rating. He has put up
some good numbers since joining Saint John, registering three goals and three
assists in 11 games.
BEST LINE: The line of Donaghey, Highmore, and Marcus
Cuomo was definitely Saint John’s best. The trio combined for three goals, five
assists, and nine shots. They were all a +3.
SHOTS: The tables quickly turned on the shot clock in
this game. After out shooting Cape Breton 16-5 in the first, Saint John was out
shot 23-6 in the second frame. Yikes. The second period was not pretty. Shots
were close in the third with the Eagles holding a 13-12 edge.
AFTER TWO: This was just the 18th time this
season that Cape Breton led after two periods of play. They fell to 12-2-1-3 in
those game.
BISHOP: Clark Bishop was in beast mode for Cape Breton.
Along with scoring a goal, he had 11 of the Eagles’ 41 shots. He also had a
team best four hits.
“FIGHT”: Bizarre “fight” between Maxime Villemaire and
Raphael Corriveau at 13:31 of the third. They didn’t even call it a fight as the two were
handed delay of game penalties instead. As described by the Sea Dogs website:
Maxime Villemaire and Raphael Corriveau started to mix it up, but Villemaire dropped the Eagles winger with a single punch. The two were handed delay of game penalties as opposed to fighting majors for the quick bout.
Begins at 2:10 of the highlight package below.
AUGER: Another solid game by Sebastien Auger who made 39
saves for the win. That includes 22 saves in the second period alone. Auger
leads the league in saves with 1,519.
STREAKS: Saint John ended a four game losing streak with
this win. Cape Breton has now lost five straight and are 2-8-0-0 in their last
10 games. They ain’t making the playoffs.
VS EAGLES: Saint John improved to 5-2-0-0 against Cape
Breton this season while the Screaming Eagles fell to 2-4-0-1 against the Sea
Dogs. These teams meet one more time this season on March 10 in Sydney.
STANDINGS: Big overtime win by the Sherbrooke Phoenix
last night in Rimouski. They remain two points back of Saint John for 15th

NOTES: The Screaming Eagles wore their third jersesys… noise
makers were handed out at the door… Oliver Cooper had two great chances in the
first period but could not connect on either… Saint John’s top line of
Villemaire – Anderson – Zilbert was a -2 after two… pretty good Wednesday crowd
of 4,114 attended the game… Cooper had a team high five shots… Ian Saab was a
+2.
