SYDNEY, NS - It was a painful night for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs never trailed until 17:32 of the third period when Mathias Laferriere scored what proved to be the game-winner in a 5-3 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles win on Wednesday night at Centre 200.

Much of the contest was fairly even with Saint John opening the scoring and leading for a lot of the game. Just when it looked like the Sea Dogs were on their way to earning, at the very least, a crucial point - a point that could have put them into the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's final playoff spot - Laferriere beat a stunned Mikhail Denisov to put Cape Breton in front.

The Sea Dogs remain one point back of the Shawinigan Cataractes, who currently hold the league's final playoff spot. Saint John has two games remaining: Friday in Halifax and Saturday in Moncton. It would be a minor miracle if the Dogs got a point on Friday, which means Saturday is basically the team's only shot - and that's assuming Shawinigan losses.

Filip Prikryl scored twice for Saint John while Maxim Cajkovic added a solo marker. Denisov was very good in net, making 34 stops in the loss.

Along with Laferriere, Mitchell Balmas, Gabriel Proulx, Leon Gawanke and Wilson Forest scored. Kevin Mandolese made 22 stops in the win.

Game Day 66: at Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs begin their final stretch of the 2018-19 season tonight at Centre 200.

The Sea Dogs, who remain one point back of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's final playoff spot, take on the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles this evening at 7 p.m. The team has two more games remaining - both on the road - following this match.

The Screaming Eagles, meanwhile, are still in the race for home ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs with three games remaining in their schedule. They sit three points back of the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference.

FINAL: Saint John 2, Cape Breton 7

SYDNEY, NS - It was another ugly night for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs were outshot 54-16 in a 7-2 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Friday at Centre 200. Saint John has now lost nine straight games overall and 12 straight on the road.

Goaltender Tommy DaSilva, making his first appearance since Dec. 7, managed to keep it close through two periods with the Dogs trailing just 3-2 despite being outshot 38-9. Like Thursday, the Eagles blew it open in the third period, scoring four times en route to a blowout win.

Brooklyn Kalmikov scored twice for Cape Breton while singles came from Adam McCormick, Ryan Francis, Nathan Larose, Olivier Bourret and Shaun Miller. William Grimard only had to make 14 saves to earn the win.

Josh Lawrence and Nicholas Deakin-Poot scored for Saint John. DaSilva made 47 stops in the loss.

Making matters worse for the Sea Dogs is the fact that they continue to be hit by the injury bug. The team played three players short on Friday, dressing just 15 skaters. Saint John is literally limping towards the finish line.

Game Day 61: at Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to put last night's loss behind them this evening.

The Sea Dogs were hammered 10-3 by the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last night at Centre 200. Former Saint John forward Isiah Campbell led the way with four goals and two assists while ex-Dogs d-man Nathan Larose added a solo marker.

The two teams meet again tonight at 7 p.m.

SYDNEY, NS - Isiah Campbell burned his former team on Thursday night at Centre 200.

The forward set a career high for goals and points in a game, netting an impressive four goals and two assists, to lead the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles to a 10-3 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Campbell had two goals and three assists in four games against his old club last season. In five games this year, the 18-year old has five goals and two helpers.

Shaun Miller scored twice for the Eagles while singles came from Egor Sokolov, Gabriel Proulx, Mitchell Balmas and ex-Dog Nathan Larose. Kevin Mandolese made 17 saves in the win.

Saint John was heavily outshot once again. Shots ended 48-20 in favour of Cape Breton - and were 21-5 in the second period alone. For the most part, Saint John has had the perfect storm of problems lately - they can't score and they can't keep the puck out of their own net. Saint John has allowed six or more goals in six of their past eight games.

Lost in this loss will be Maxim Cajkovic scoring his first career QMJHL hat trick, giving him 20 goals on the season - which places him third amongst QMJHL rookies.

With Mikhail Denisov still out with an injury, Zachary Bouthillier was left in for all 10 goals. He made 38 saves in the loss.

Game Day 60: at Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs play the first of back-to-back games against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles tonight at Centre 200.

The Sea Dogs, who have lost seven straight, are coming off a shootout loss in Charlottetown last Sunday. Cape Breton, meanwhile, is in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 73 points.

This is the first game of a three-in-four for Saint John. Game time tonight is 7 p.m.

Drover to join MHL's Wildcats

SAINT JOHN - In an expected but perhaps not preferred move, the Saint John Sea Dogs will be assigning 16-year-old forward Alex Drover to the Valley Wildcats of the Maritime Hockey League.

Drover was acquired in the Nathan Larose trade with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles a couple weeks ago and has recorded a goal and an assist in six games. Overall this season, the 10th overall pick in last June's QMJHL Entry Draft has four goals and nine assists in 32 games.

Unfortunately for Drover and the Sea Dogs, there is a limit on the number of 16-year-olds a team can carry - and Saint John has been over that limit all season with Josh Lawrence, Brady Burns, William Villeneuve and Jeremie Poirier. Drover, like Dawson Stairs, will play the remainder of the season in the MHL where he'll get plenty of ice time.

According to a Wildcats release, Drover is expected to join the Berwick, NS based junior 'A' club this week.

“We’re very happy to work out a deal with Saint John to acquire Alex’s Maritime league rights and provide him the ice time he needs to develop,” said Wildcats general manager and head coach Nick Greenough in a release. “It’s not every day you’re able to add a first-rounder from the Q and we expect Alex will provide some much-needed scoring punch.”

The Wildcats sit last overall in the MHL with a 5-23-3-0 record and have scored a league low 63 goals.

The Sea Dogs recently assigned defenseman Carson Gallant to the Wildcats as well.

RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 5-1

FINAL: Cape Breton 5, Saint John 1

SAINT JOHN - The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles had little trouble with the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday night at Harbour Station.

Derek Gentile scored twice to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 5-1 win over the Sea Dogs. Egor Sokolov, Ian Smallwood and Shaun Miller also scored. William Grimard made 22 stops in the win.

Aiden MacIntosh scored Saint John's lone goal. Alex D'Orio allowed five goals on 41 shots in the loss.

The Screaming Eagles scored two goals less than three minutes apart midway through the first period to grab a 2-0 advantage. MacIntosh scored late in the frame to get Saint John within one, but two Cape Breton goals late in the second period secured the victory.

This was the second game of a three-in-three for the Sea Dogs, who were coming off a big 6-5 win in Moncton on Thursday night. The team hosts the Rimouski Oceanic on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Game Day 39: vs Screaming Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to keep rolling tonight at Harbour Station when they host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

The Sea Dogs defeated the Moncton Wildcats 6-5 on the road last night, giving the club five wins in their past 10 games. The team has eight wins all season.

Sea Dogs acquire Drover from Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs made a big splash on the opening day of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's trading period.

The Sea Dogs acquired forward Alex Drover from the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in exchange for defenseman Nathan Larose and a 2020 third-round draft pick.

Drover, 16, was the 10th overall pick in June's QMJHL Entry Draft. He's appeared in 26 games with the Screaming Eagles this season, recording three goals and eight assists.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alex to the Sea Dogs,” said Sea Dogs president and general manager Trevor Georgie in a news release. “Alex is a goal scorer with lots of offensive upside and will be a nice compliment to the young core that we already have in place. He is another young player who will develop and grow with our rookie class as we continue to put the pieces together for a future Memorial Cup team.”

Word of the deal began on Saturday night with the Screaming Eagles in town. Neither Larose nor Drover played in the game.

The Sea Dogs continue to stockpile high end 2002-born players with the move. Jeremie Poirier, William Villeneuve, Josh Lawrence and Brady Burns are already regulars while Dawson Stairs has appeared in several games as an affiliate. The Dogs are already over the underage player limit, so it's unclear what exactly is going to happen here.

Drover, a Port-aux-Basques, NL native, played the 2017-18 season with the Halifax McDonald’s of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League where he recorded 27 goals and 30 assists, earning the league’s Rookie of the Year honour.

Larose, 18, was in his second season with the Sea Dogs. In 26 games he had two goals and six assists.

The QMJHL's trading period closes on Jan. 6.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs ended the first half with a one-goal loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Alex D'Orio, making his second straight start after two weeks off, made 32 stops in a 3-2 Sea Dogs loss to the Eagles on Saturday night at Harbour Station. With the QMJHL's trading period opening up on Sunday, this very well could have been the netminder's final start as a Sea Dog.

Saint John struggled to generate offense on Saturday, recording just eight shots through the first 30 minutes of play. D'Orio kept the team in the contest until they were able to get things going a bit in the third.

Cape Breton's Ian Smallwood and Brooklyn Kalmikov both scored in the second period to put the visitors up 2-0. Filip Prikryl scored his second of the season at 2:28 of the third, redirecting a Yohan Plamondon pass through the five-hole of Eagles goaltender William Grimard.

Less than three-minutes later, Mitchell Balmas scored what proved to be the game-winner. Jeremie Poirier scored on a beautiful individual effort at 7:46, sliding in and around the Cape Breton defense in the offensive zone, but that would be as close as the Dogs would get to tying things up.

Grimard made 17 saves in the win.

2018 has not been good for road Dogs

HALIFAX - The Saint John Sea Dogs are experiencing major road woes.

Saint John's 6-2 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Wednesday night was the team's 13th straight road loss. The Sea Dogs are now 0-12-0-1 away from Harbour Station this season.

Saint John ended last season with a 16-game road winless streak. Their last win on the road came on Dec. 15, 2017 - a 4-3 overtime victory in Moncton.

All of this is to say: the Sea Dogs have lost a combined 29 straight road games and have not won a single game away from Harbour Station in the 2018 calendar year. That is quite remarkable (and not great).

A few other notes on this stretch:

• Saint John's streak of 16 straight road losses last season is tied for the 13th longest in league history. The team's franchise record is 17 which was set during the 2006-07 season (which is tied for eighth all-time).
• The league record for consecutive road losses is 25 set by the 1997-98 Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. The 2013-14 Sherbrooke Phoenix have the second longest at 22.
• On the road this season, Saint John has been outscored 80-27 (-53 goal differential). In 2017-18, the Dogs were outscored 152-82 (-70 goal differential).

The Sea Dogs, who have now lost 17 straight games overall, will play their next three games on home ice. Here's a look at the team's remaining road games as the club looks to get an away win before the calendar turns.

Dec. 9 at Moncton
Dec. 28 at Bathurst

The Dec. 28 game in Bathurst will probably be Saint John's best chance (and perhaps last shot) at earning a road victory in 2018.

SYDNEY, NS - Make it 17 straight losses for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs fell 6-2 to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Wednesday night at Centre 200, extending their franchise high losing skid. The team also remains winless on the road, dropping all 13 of the away games they have played this season.

Saint John outshot Cape Breton 12-11 in the first period but found themselves down 3-0. They got back within two goals early in the third, but the hole they had dug themselves into was simply too big.

The Sea Dogs have really struggled in the second half of hockey games the past few weeks, and that stretch continued. After outshooting the Eagles in the first, Saint John was outshot a combined 31-10 through the final 40 minutes.

Adding some pain to to this loss was the fact that former Sea Dogs Isiah Campbell and Ian Smallwood both scored. Shaun Miller, Gabriel Proulx, Adam McCormick and Olivier Bourret had goals for the homeside. Cape Breton backup William Grimard made 20 saves in the win.

Charlie DesRoches and Anthony Boucher scored for Saint John. Alex D'Orio was pulled after allowing six goals on 35 shots. Mikhail Denisov made seven stops in relief.

Game Day 26: at Cape Breton

SYDNEY, NS - The Saint John Sea Dogs have won just two games all season - and tonight they'll be facing one of the teams they have defeated this year.

The Sea Dogs have not won a game since Oct. 9 at Harbour Station when they beat the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-3. Saint John has lost a franchise high 16 straight games since then.

The Sea Dogs and Screaming Eagles will meet this evening at 7 p.m. at Centre 200 as Saint John looks to end their skid once again.

SAINT JOHN - It was a weekend to forget for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

After suffering a 5-0 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday, things went even worse for the team on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-2 to the same Eagles squad at Harbour Station.

Saint John was down just 2-1 after the first, but three goals by the Eagles in the opening 10 minutes of the third guided the visitors to an easy victory. Cape Breton is now 4-0-0-1 in their past five games.

The Eagles had nine different goal scorers on Sunday: Leon Gawanke, Mitchell Balmas, Mathias Laferriere, Felix Lafrance, Egor Sokolov, Gabriel Proulx, Brooklyn Kalmikov, Declan Smith and Alex Drover. Kevin Mandolese, who also started Saturday night's game, made 30 saves in the win.

Saint John goals came from Yohan Plamondon and Charlie DesRoches. Tommy DaSilva had another rough start, allowing nine goals on 33 shots.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles meet again this afternoon at Harbour Station.

The Sea Dogs were in Saturday's game until the third period. The Screaming Eagles scored two quick goals in the final frame and then added two more to take the game 5-0.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs let a close game get away from them on Saturday night at Harbour Station.

The Cape Breton Screaming Eagles scored four times in the third period to edge the Sea Dogs 5-0. It was anybodies game heading into the final period - especially given how both teams were struggling to produce much of anything on the power play - but a couple quick goals set up a dominant final 20 minutes for the Eagles.

The Sea Dogs have had their struggles in third periods this season, now being outscored by a total of 25-9. Last Sunday's performance in Charlottetown was hopefully going to be a sign of the team turning things around - but apparently not.

Egor Sokolov scored twice for Cape Breton while singles came from Wilson Forest, Ryan Francis and Liam Kidney. Kevin Mandolese made 15 saves in the win.

Alex D'Orio made 36 saves in the loss.

The two teams meet again on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs return to action tonight, hosting the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

These two teams met a couple weeks ago at Harbour Station in a game that saw the Sea Dogs end their six-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over the Screaming Eagles.

Yohan Plamondon and Anthony Boucher scored two goals each for Saint John while Maxim Cajkovic also scored. Mitchell Balmas, Brooklyn Kalmikov and Ryan Francis scored for Cape Breton. Alex D'Orio made 36 stops in the win. Kevin Mandolese made seven stops before being pulled early in the second period. William Grimard made 16 stops in relief.

SAINT JOHN - The streak is over.

The Saint John Sea Dogs ended a six-game losing skid on Tuesday night at Harbour Station, defeating the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 5-3. It was the club's second win of the season and first since Sept. 23.

In the victory, the Sea Dogs did a couple things they had not done this season: lead after a first period and score on the power play. Saint John did both in this game: leading after 20 minutes for the first time and scoring their first man advantage goal of the year to break a 0/30 slump.

Saint John adjusted their top line, replacing William Poirier on the wing with Anthony Boucher. The move seemed to work as Boucher scored a pair of goals while playing with linemates Josh Lawrence and Maxim Cajkovic. Saint John's top line has struggled to produce over the past few games, but the adjustment seemed to spark them. Cajkovic also had a goal to go along with six shots.

The suddenly hot Yohan Plamondon scored Saint John's other two goals (one being an empty netter). Plamondon now has points in four straight games and goals in three.

Alex D'Orio had one of his best starts of the season, making 36 stops. All in all, it was a good night for the Sea Dogs - a night the team no doubt hopes to replicate moving forward.

Mitchell Balmas, Brooklyn Kalmikov and Ryan Francis scored for Cape Breton. Kevin Mandolese was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots 21:13 of play. William Grimard made 16 stops in relief.

Game Day 9: vs Screaming Eagles

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to put an end to their losing streak again today.

The Sea Dogs have lost six straight games heading into tonight's 7 p.m. matchup with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at Harbour Station. Their last - and only - victory this season came in their second game of the year.

The Screaming Eagles, meanwhile, have lost back-to-back games heading into this evening's match.
