SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs' backend is picking up right where it left off.

After three defensemen - William Villeneuve, Jeremie Poirier and Charlie DesRoches - all finished with 30 or more points a season ago, the three look poised for a repeat performance. On Sunday at TD Station, DesRoches scored twice and added two assists while Poirier recorded two helpers in the 6-3 victory.

DesRoches now leads all QMJHL defenseman in points (six) and goals (four) this pre-season.

Sunday's match was the most evenly played game of Saint John's exhibition schedule so far. It looked as though the Dogs were going to run away with it after grabbing a 3-0 first period lead, but the Mooseheads kept hanging around, led by Zachary L'Heureux.

This was Halifax's first loss of the pre-season. Saint John improved to 2-2.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs did not dress forward Julian Vander Voet; defensemen Nathan Drapeau and Christopher Inniss; and goaltender Creed Jones. Forwards Matthew Gould and Vladislav Kotkov and defenseman Jan Hampl remain unable to join the team's training camp.

MOODY: Overage netminder Daniel Moody played the second half of this game, allowing two goals on 22 shots. Moody, who had been attending Sea Dogs training camp on loan from the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, was officially acquired by the club earlier this week in exchange for a 12th-round draft pick. Moody will presumably remain in Saint John until newly acquired 20-year-old Creed Jones completes his quarantine.

FIGHT: The first period featured quite a fight between Riley Bezeau and prized Moosehead Zachary L'Heureux. Bezeau got the better of L'Heureux, firing quite a few fists into his opponent's face. The officials had a few chances to break the fight up early, but oddly let the two continue.
EARLY SHOTS: One problem that has strangely plagued Saint John's goaltenders this pre-season has been the first few shots they face. The trend continued on Sunday when Moody allowed the second shot fired his way.

PK PROBLEMS: It is the pre-season, so whatever... but it's worth noting Saint John's problems on the penalty kill. After allowing two more man advantage goals today, the Sea Dogs now have the third worst penalty kill in the league with a rating of 66.7%. They've given opposing teams a league high 21 man advantage opportunities and have allowed a league high seven goals on those.

PENALTY SHOT: A rare pre-season penalty shot was awarded in the third period. Dawson Stairs made a great move but was robbed by the glove of Brady James.
CROWD: The TD Station crowd was a bit larger than the last pre-season game held in the building a couple weeks ago.

NOTES: Noah Patenaude didn't face too many dangerous shots, but didn't look too bad. He allowed a goal on 14 shots in the first half of the game... William Villeneuve, Jeremie Poirier and Charles Savoie all wore an 'A' on their jersey... the game was broadcast on the Sea Dogs YouTube channel, which was a first. Bruce Smith and his son, Joe, had the call... for the first time this pre-season, the Sea Dogs didn't reach the 40-shot mark... these two don't meet again until Oct. 17 in Halifax.

REPLAY

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs travel to Sydney to face the Eagles on Friday at 7 p.m.
