After scoring just three times on 50 shots in Tuesday's loss, the Sea Dogs made up for it in this game, defeating the Acadie-Bathurst Titan 9-4 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season action at a fan-less KC Irving Regional Centre.
Cam MacDonald led the way with a hat trick while Peter Reynolds and Dawson Stairs each scored twice. Leighton Carruthers and Alex Drover also scored. Goaltender Carmine-Anthony Pagliarulo rebounded from a rough start and made 14 saves in the first half of the game. Noah Patenaude allowed one goal on 13 shots in the second half of the match.
Bathurst had goals from Nolan Mozer, Dylan Andrews, Ben Allison and Carter Ansems. Former Sea Dog Tommy DaSilva allowed five goals on 28 shots through 40 minutes of play. Jack Howatt allowed four goals on 14 shots in the third.
Both teams are now 1-1 in pre-season play after the Titan won Tuesday's matchup at TD Station, 6-3.
Mozer scored on the Titan's opening shot of the game, firing a point shot through some traffic and past Pagliarulo. Then just over a minute later at 5:57, Andrews scored on his own rebound to quickly make it 2-0 Bathurst. The Titan had just three shots on goal at that point.
Saint John slowly began to take control of the game - and fully took over when Reynolds scored at 14:02. Charles Savoie stole the puck along the side boards and found a wide open Reynolds in front who beat DaSilva with a one-timer.
The Dogs tied the game at 15:40 when Carruthers was left all alone and beat the Titan 'tender with a quick shot. Then 19:20, Drover sped through the Bathurst defense and roofed the puck past DaSilva to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage through 20 minutes.
Bathurst tied the game at 9:42 of the second. On a power play, Allison ripped the puck top corner glove side past Pagliarulo to make it a 3-3 game. Patendaude swapped in following that goal.
It didn't take long for Saint John to retake the lead. At 10:13, Stairs scored on a backhand shot to make it 4-3. Then at 16:56, Stairs deked around an outstretched DaSilva and got the puck just across the line to give Saint John a two-goal lead through two.
Saint John got off to a great start in the third. Facing Howatt in the Titan goal, MacDonald finished off a nice passing play and scored to make it 6-3 just 25 seconds in. The goal was originally given to Drover.
At 1:33, Reynolds scored his second of the game, beating Howatt five-hole. Then at 3:31, MacDonald scored again to make it 8-3. Later in the period at 14:10, MacDonald completed the third period hat trick.
Ansems scored at 14:56 to round out the scoring.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs did not dress goaltender Daniel Moody; forwards Nicholas Girouard and Liam Leonard; along with defensemen Charlie DesRoches, Christopher Inniss and William Villeneuve.
LETTERS: Josh Lawrence, Julian Vander Voet and Jeremie Poirier each had an 'A' on their sweaters for this game.
DEBUTS: Josh Lawrence, Joshua Roy, Kale McCallum, Brendan Sibley, Jeremie Poirier and Carmine-Anthony Pagliarulo all made their pre-season debuts on Thursday. This was Pagliarulo's first appearance as a Sea Dog.
ROUGH START: Much like Noah Patenaude and Daniel Moody on Tuesday, Sea Dogs goaltender Carmine-Anthony Pagliarulo had a rough start, allowing the first shot he faced and two of the first three. Like Moody on Tuesday, Pagliarulo settled in a bit after facing some more shots. He finished the night with three goals against on 17 shots.
FIRSTS: Rookies Peter Reynolds, Leighton Carruthers and Cam MacDonald both connected for their first per-season goals. Reynolds had a few good chances in Tuesday's game - including a shot that hit the crossbar.
SHOTS: With 42 shots on goal in this game, the Sea Dogs have now recorded 92 total shots in their first two pre-season games. It's only pre-season, but it's encouraging.
NOTES: No fans were permitted into the building for this game... there was either an issue with the KC Irving Regional Centre goal horn following Bathurst's first goal or the person turning it on was real happy to be back at work... solid webcast for a pre-season game... Bathurst's Ben Allison now has three goals in two pre-season games... Riley Bezeau and Cameron MacLean dropped the gloves early in the third period and later on Brendan Sibley and Cole Huckins fought... all of Saint John's goals were scored at even strength... 16-year-old netminder Jack Howatt allowed four goals on 14 shots after giving up just one on 24 shots in Tuesday's game.

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs travel to Dartmouth to face the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday at 4 p.m.
