New CHL event coming in 2025-26?

Is a new event coming to the Canadian Hockey League calendar in 2025-26?

During the second intermission of Friday's Memorial Cup opener on TSN, Darren Dreger reported that the CHL is looking to add a third national event, joining the Top Prospects Game (whatever that looks like in the future) and the Memorial Cup.

Dreger discusses the event – and what the NCAA's latest court rulings mean for the CHL – beginning at the 1:04 mark of the video below.

Dreger indicated that it will be some sort of in-season event – but what that event looks like seems to still be in the ideation phase.

It's a bit surprising it's taken the CHL this long to add a third national event with the Canada-Russia Series on hiatus. You'd have to think TSN, the league's television rights holder, would also like a third event.

It was reported in January that next year's Top Prospects Game could have a new format.

I've written about this before, but the CHL has to find a way to get the league's best players (and/or teams) facing each other during the season. Whether that be creating Memorial Cup "qualifiers," creating inter-league play or, at minimum, some kind of national all-star event, something needs to be done to make these matchups happen.

Notebook: Ex-Dogs in town Saturday

HALIFAX - The Saint John Sea Dogs will face a couple of familiar faces for the first time on Saturday.

Forwards Charles Savoie and Carter McCluskey, who the Sea Dogs traded to the Cape Breton Eagles at the deadline, will face their former club for the first time since being dealt. The Sea Dogs and Eagles meet on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at TD Station.

McCluskey has two goals and an assist in eight games with Cape Breton while Savoie has a goal and a helper in seven contests.

The Eagles also feature former Sea Dogs forward Nicholas Girouard who has 11 goals and 11 assists in 22 games.

The Dogs and Eagles have not met since Oct. 16 in Saint John. They'll meet a total of seven times in the second half.

On Sunday, the Sea Dogs host the Halifax Mooseheads at 3 p.m. Saint John posted a 7-1 victory in Halifax on Wednesday.

CHL CANCELS CANADA-RUSSIA GAMES

As expected, the Canadian Hockey League officially announced the cancellation of the 2022 Canada-Russia Series on Wednesday. The league did not, however, take the rumoured/reported step of banning Russian and Belarusian players from the upcoming CHL Import Draft.

Here's the full statement from the CHL:

The Canadian Hockey League strongly condemns the recent actions by Russia involving military force in Ukraine and encourages a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

In addition to supporting the measures announced by the International Ice Hockey Federation and Hockey Canada barring Russia and Belarus from international competition, the Canadian Hockey League today announced the cancellation of the 2022 Canada Russia Series. The date and format for the 2022 CHL Import Draft has yet to be determined and will be announced at a later date.

The Canadian Hockey League is committed to the safety and well-being of all of its current players and is supportive of their continued development regardless of their country of origin.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine is having quite an impact on junior hockey.

COVID cancels Canada-Russia Series again

HALIFAX - COVID-19 has cancelled another Canadian Hockey League event.

The CHL announced Friday that the 2021 Canada-Russia Series has been cancelled due to the pandemic. From the CHL:

The Canadian Hockey League announced today that the 2021 CIBC Canada Russia Series will not be played given the ongoing challenges presented by the global pandemic.

The CHL is committed to the health and safety of its players and fans and remains optimistic about the return of the event during the 2022-23 season.

Details regarding the 2022-23 event will be announced at a later date.

The six-game, cross-country event has not been held since the 2019-20 season. The series is typically used as an evaluation tool for Team Canada's World Junior Hockey Championship roster.

The last CHL hosted event to be held was the 2020 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Hamilton. No details on a potential 2022 Top Prospects Game have been released.

The cancellation is further proof that the 2021-22 CHL season will not be as "normal" as was hoped over the summer. Although things are looking much more promising than a year ago, the fourth wave is no doubt creating concerns that there may be some stops-and-starts in some markets this year.

Notebook: Rogers TV won't air NB Q games

Local Rogers TV stations in the province are not expected to air New Brunswick-based QMJHL games this season.

Broadcaster Gerry Green confirmed the news on Twitter.

Rogers TV was not listed as a broadcast partner in the QMJHL's media guide. The network's included were RDS, TSN, CBC, TVA Sports, Eastlink and Optik TV.

The Saint John Sea Dogs, Moncton Wildcats and Acadie-Bathurst Titan have had around 15-25 games broadcast each season since 2014-15 on Rogers TV.

It does seem that local Rogers TV stations in Ontario will continue to air OHL games. A recent London Knights pre-season game was broadcast on Rogers TV in London.

FRIDAY'S GAME
UNB and Fredericton police have released more details on Friday's campus evacuations, which forced the pre-season game between the Sea Dogs and Moncton Wildcats, scheduled to be played at the Aitken Centre, to be cancelled.

The UNB campuses remained closed until midnight. They are now open and have returned to normal operations. We want to thank the university community for your patience and cooperation during this investigation.

The game will not be rescheduled. The UNB Reds, who are hosting Saint John's pre-season games this year, have announced details on what to do if you had purchased tickets to the game.

QUINN LEAVING SEA DOGS

Jon Quinn, the long-time Sea Dogs in-game announcer and director of marketing and communications, is leaving the team at the end of this week.

"While my time with the team will most likely be defined by all the yelling I did from the stands and the time (well) spent embarrassing unsuspecting fans with the promise of gift cards, that doesn't begin to scratch the surface of the opportunities I was given and the unique experiences I shared with the organization," Quinn wrote in a LinkedIn post on Monday.

"To my office family who make magic happen 34+ times a year, you are the best at what you do," he added. "I will always cherish the time we spent together, the many successes we shared, the bad times and the good."

Quinn has been the team's in-game host and held a variety of other roles since 2014.

Canada Russia Pre-Game Notes (again)

MONCTON - Greetings from downtown Moncton where the second game of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series will take place this evening.

Here are some notes heading into the game:

• If you're reading this, you are likely aware that Russia erased a 3-1 deficit to defeat Team QMJHL in the first game of the series last night in Saint John. Russia improved to 3-0 all-time in games played at TD Station.
• The big story was Moncton's Alexander Khovanov, who continued his hot play into Monday's game, recording two goals and helping set up the other two. 
• It was a big night for Wildcats players on Saint John ice. Along with Khovanov's performance, Jakob Pelletier had two assists and Jordan Spence one.
• Moncton goaltender Olivier Rodrigue will presumably get the start tonight in his home building. Alexis Gravel played the entire game last night.
• It's looking like there will be a good crowd at tonight's game - the first event to be nationally televised from Avenir Centre. Last night's game at TD Station was listed as a sell out, although it looked as though it was slightly under.
• Team QMJHL was swept by the Russians last year and haven't won a game since the fifth match of the 2017 series, played in Charlottetown.
• Moncton last hosted a Canada Russia Game in 2017, which Russia won 2-1. In 2005, Team QMJHL defeated the Russians 6-4.

Game time tonight is once again 8 p.m. The game can be seen on Sportsnet.

Canada Russia Pre-Game Notes

SAINT JOHN - The first game of the 2019 CIBC Canada Russia Series takes place tonight at TD Station.

Here are a few notes prior to the game:

• The QMJHL confirmed late last night that Alexis Lafreniere will miss both games of the series with an injury. The news comes after Lafreniere was tossed from Rimouski's last game for a check to the head.
• With Lafreniere unable to play, Halifax's Benoit-Olivier Groulx has been named Team QMJHL's captain.
• It's been a rough few weeks for the QMJHL's top draft eligible talents. Chicoutimi's Hendrix Lapierre, projected to be a top-10 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft by many, had previously pulled out of the series with an injury.
• Even with Lafreniere and Lapierre out, the Q's lineup still features some strong draft eligible talent, including Saint John's Jeremie Poirier, Halifax's Justin Barron, Drummondville's Dawson Mercer and Shawinigan Mavrik Bourque.
• Halifax's Alexis Gravel will, unsurprisingly, get the start in net. Moncton's Olivier Rodrigue will likely get the start in his home building tomorrow night.
• The Sea Dogs have been promoting this game as part of the club's bid to host the 2022 Memorial Cup (pictured). There were less than 300 tickets remaining for the game at the time of this post.
• Note that game time is 8 p.m. The game can be seen on Sportsnet One.

The series shifts to Moncton tomorrow.

Third time a charm for Team QMJHL?

SAINT JOHN - Team QMJHL will be looking for their first ever win on TD Station ice on Monday night.

Saint John will be hosting the CIBC Canada Russia Series for a third time tomorrow night with puck dropped scheduled for 8 p.m. The Russians have won both of the previous games held at TD Station - and Team QMJHL will look to change that this year.

In 2008, Alex Grant, Yann Sauve, Steven Anthony and future Sea Dog Mike Hoffman fell 4-3 to the Russians. Grant was named Team QMJHL's player of the game. Then in 2010, Zack Phillip, Jonathan Huberdeau, Nathan Beaulieu and future Sea Dogs Eric Gelinas and Charles-Olivier Roussel lost 5-4 to Stanislav Galiev and the Russian squad.

There will be just one Sea Dog on the ice tomorrow - defenseman Jeremie Poirier. Sea Dogs head coach Josh Dixon will act as an assistant coach under Dale Hunter, the head coach of Canada's world junior team this year.

Saint John hosted the opening game of the series in 2010 as well. Game 2 will be held in Moncton - the first CHL event to take place at the Avenir Centre.

Team QMJHL is 17-11-1-3 all-time in the series.

Canada/Russia Series returning to Saint John

SAINT JOHN - A little lost in Thursday's QMJHL Draft Lottery excitement was the news that the CHL's Canada/Russia Series is making a return to Harbour Station.

The Canadian Hockey League announced the six host cities for the 2019 event, which will feature CHL all star teams (made up of Canadian players) going up against a Russian junior team, on Thursday. For the first time since 2013, the series will begin in the QMJHL - which was the normal thing to do back in the day.

Here are the six host cities:

Game 1 – Monday, November 4 at Saint John, NB
Game 2 – Tuesday, November 5 at Moncton, NB
Game 3 – Thursday, November 7 at Kitchener, ON
Game 4 – Monday, November 11 at London, ON
Game 5 – Wednesday, November 13 at Saskatoon, SK
Game 6 – Thursday, November 14 at Prince Albert, SK

Saint John has hosted the event twice in the past. In 2008, the Russians defeated Team QMJHL 4-3 and in 2010 Russia beat the QMJHL 5-4.

Moncton last hosted very recently. In 2017, the Russians beat the QMJHL 2-1 in the final game of the event.

The event is used to scout players for the World Junior Hockey Championship.

Sea Dogs sign, recall Joel Goguen

The Saint John Sea Dogs made another roster move on Thursday, signing and recalling goaltender Joel Goguen.

Goguen, 18, attended Sea Dogs training camp as a free agent. He will now be an affiliate with the team.

The Cocagne, New Brunswick native has appeared in eight games with the MHL's Amherst Ramblers this year, posting a 3-3-1 record with a 2.45 goals against average and a .920 save percentage.

According to a Sea Dogs press release, Goguen "spent most of last season with the Kent Koyotes of the New Brunswick Junior Hockey League (NBJHL)."

The recall indicates that regular Saint John backup goaltender Matt Williams remains injured. The team has been using Stewart Bagnell as a backup for the past few weeks.

Yesterday, the Sea Dogs signed 20-year-old defenceman Brendan O'Reilly.

Saint John is back in action on Friday night in Halifax, facing the Mooseheads at 7 p.m.

Canada Russia Series ends tonight

MONCTON - Joe Veleno and Team QMJHL wrap up the 2017 Canada Russia Series tonight at the Moncton Coliseum.

Veleno had a strong performance on Tuesday night in Charlottetown, helping set up the game winning goal in a 3-1 Team QMJHL victory.

Tuesday's win gave the CHL an edge in the series heading into tonight's finale.

According to the CHL website, "up 9-6 in points, a QMJHL win on Thursday in Moncton would secure a third straight series victory for the Canadian Hockey League."

Some other notes...

• Nice to see a crowd of 3,613 at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown on Tuesday. The attendance number was just shy of s sell out, apparently.
• This is the first time a Canada Russia Series game has been played in Moncton since Nov. 22, 2005. Team QMJHL won that game 6-4.
• Samuel Harvey will start in goal again tonight, according to media reports. He may play himself into a world junior camp invite.

Veleno has strong game for Team QMJHL; new 2018 draft rankings released

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI - Joe Veleno was one of Team QMJHL's standout players in Game 5 of the Canada Russia Series on Tuesday night.

Veleno was praised throughout Sportsnet's broadcast for his strong play with and without the puck. The Saint John Sea Dogs captain finished the game with one assist (which came on Drake Batherson's game-winning goal in the third period), no shots, an even rating and 3/5 in the faceoff circle.

This was the first game of the QMJHL portion of the 2017 Canada Russia Series. The Russians and CHL entered the game tied in points at 6-6. The final game of the series takes place on Thursday in Moncton.

This was Veleno's first career game in the annual series, which is used to determine Canada's world junior team.

Batherson, Shawn Boudrias and Nicolas Guay scored for the QMJHL Samuel Harvey was terrific in net, making 25 stops in the win.

Veleno no doubt wanted to have a strong game after sliding way down Craig Button's latest 2018 draft rankings. The Sea Dogs forward has been projected as a top 10-15 pick by most draft publications, but Button's November rankings at TSN.ca had him ranked 25th.

Future Considerations' Fall rankings have Veleno ranked seventh.

Jeff Marek's November rankings had Veleno at No. 6.

A recent mock draft conducted by The Hockey News had Veleno going eighth overall to the Arizona Coyotes.

Team QMJHL completes sweep of Russia

BAIE-COMEAU - Team QMJHL completed a two-game sweep of Russia last night to wrap up the 2016 edition of the CIBC Canada Russia Series.

Maxime Comtois scored twice while singles came from Gabriel Fontaine and Jean-Christophe Beaudin in the 4-1 victory. Alexandre Fortin added two assists and Even Fitzpatrick made 19 saves in the victory.

Both Thomas Chabot and Mathieu Joseph were held pointless on the night. Joseph seemed to be involved in the play more than in Tuesday's game, and was given quite a bit of ice time in the third period.

Joseph finished the tournament with two shots on goal and no points. While he may not have drastically improved his chances of getting an invite to Canada's world junior camp during the series, he certainly didn't hurt them. And with 19 goals in 19 games with Saint John this year, it's hard to imagine him not getting a camp invite - but far stranger things have happened with Hockey Canada.

Meanwhile, Chabot had one goal and two shots in the two games. He's a lock to make Team Canada and should be given one of larger defensive roles on the team.

Canada's selection camp will take place Dec. 11-14 in Blainville-Boisbriand.

A couple other notes...

• Former Sea Dogs forward Nikita Li finished the series with one goal and 11 shots in the six games.
• This was the first time in three years that Team QMJHL won both of its games against Russia.
• The CHL also announced that a select number of jerseys from the Canada Russia Series will be auctioned off online. Proceeds will go to the Canadian Cancer Society - in honour of Sea Dogs equipment manager David "DK" Kelly.

Chabot scores in QMJHL victory

CHICOUTIMI, Que. - Thomas Chabot scored in Team QMJHL's 4-0 win in Game 5 of the 2016 CIBC Canada Russia Series on Tuesday.

The victory secured a series victory for the CHL even with one game remaining in the annual six-game event.

Chabot scored on a slap shot at 5:22 of the third period, giving Team QMJHL a 3-0 lead at the time.

Julien Gauthier scored twice while Nicolas Roy added a solo marker. Captain Pierre-Luc Dubois had two assists. Callum Booth made 16 saves for the shutout win - the first ever by the QMJHL in Canada Russia Series play.

The other Sea Dog playing in the event, forward Mathieu Joseph, was held pointless with one shot.

Former Sea Dogs forward Nikita Li, playing with the Russian squad, had one shot.

The series comes to a close on Thursday in Baie-Comeau.

Chabot added to Team QMJHL roster

HAMILTON - Saint John Sea Dogs defenceman Thomas Chabot has been added to Team QMJHL’s roster for the 2016 CIBC Canada Russia Series.

The addition comes as no surprise as Chabot, who participated in last year’s World Junior Hockey Championship, is a near lock to make Team Canada. The 19-year-old wasn’t named to the Q all-star squad originally because he was still with the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

Chabot has only played in four games with Saint John since returning from Ottawa but has posted an impressive one goal and seven assists in those matches.

This is the second year Chabot will participate in the series. He recorded one assist in last year’s games.

Forwards Antoine Morand of the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and Alexandre Alain of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada were also added to the roster. The Armada’s Jeremy Roy and Pascal Laberge of the Victoriaville Tigres will both miss the series due to injuries.

Along with Chabot, the Sea Dogs will be represented by forward Mathieu Joseph. The 19-year-old will enter the series as the QMJHL’s leading goal scoring with 19 on the year.

Game 5 of the Canada Russia Series will take place on Tuesday night Chicoutimi while the sixth and final game will be held on Thursday in Baie-Comeau.

News & Notes: Li on Russia roster

There is a familiar name on the Russian team that will compete in the Canada Russia Series.

Nikita Li, who played in one regular season game with Saint John in 2014-15, is on the roster. The Sea Dogs put Li, a second-round pick in the 2015 CHL Import Draft, on waivers where he was claimed by the Victoriaville Tigres.

2014-15 was Li's only season in the QMJHL, recording 10 goals and six assists in 61 regular season games. He added one goal in four playoff games.

According to Elite Prospects, Li has three assists in 17 games with the KHL's Spartak Moscow this season.

The Canada Russia series begins on Monday in Prince George.

Some notes...

• Speaking of the Canada Russia Series, Sportsnet has list of players to watch at the event. No. 1 on the list? Sea Dogs forward Mathieu Joseph.
• The Sea Dogs' Jan. 7 in Halifax will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet. Game time has been adjusted to 4 p.m.
• The Tampa Bay Lightning website has a feature on Mathieu Joseph. 
• How about the Ottawa Senators' handling of Thomas Chabot? The blog Silver Seven looks at that.
• It certainly appeared the Ottawa 67's were destined to host the Memorial Cup in 2018. They have withdrawn their bid though, according to TSN Radio host.
• Sea Dogs prospect Shane Bowers was ranked 20th in the Sportsnet's November NHL Draft rankings. Bowers has six goals and six assists in 11 games with the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks this season.
• Meanwhile, Bowers was ranked 24th in ISS' November rankings.
• The Sea Dogs fell to the "honourable mention" category in the CHL Top 10 this week.
• Saint John takes on the Titan in Bathurst tomorrow night at 7 p.m. They return home on Sunday to take on the Charlottetown Islanders at 3 p.m.

Joseph heading to Canada Russia Series

Saint John Sea Dogs forward Mathieu Joseph will play for the QMJHL all-star team at this year's Canada Russia Series event.

21 Canadians from the QMJHL were named to the team, which will take on a Russian junior squad on Nov. 15 in Chicoutimi and Nov. 17 in Baie-Comeau.

This is the second straight year Joseph has been named to the QMJHL team. He appeared in both games last year, scoring twice.

Joseph is off to a great start with Saint John this season, recording 12 goals and four assists in just 11 games.

The Canada Russia Series is used by Hockey Canada to help determine who gets invited to world junior camp. Thanks to his hot start, Joseph is no doubt on Team Canada's radar.

All six games of the series - which feature all-star teams from the WHL, OHL and QMJHL - will be broadcast nationally on Sportsnet and TVA Sports.

HALIFAX – Team QMJHL split their portion of the CHL Canada Russia Series following a 6-4 win at Scotiabank Centre on Thursday.

Sea Dogs forward Mathieu Joseph, who was named to the team as an injury replacement, scored two goals in the victory. Dogs defenseman Thomas Chabot had an assist while forward Nathan Noel was held off the score sheet.

Joseph was named Team QMJHL's player of the game.

The CHL won five of the six games of the series. Russia’s only win came on Tuesday night in Rouyn-Noranda where they defeated Team QMJHL 3-2.

Sportsnet is sticking around the Maritimes and will broadcast tomorrow’s Islanders-Screaming Eagles game at Centre 200. Meanwhile, the Sea Dogs are in Baie-Comeau to face the Drakkar.

Team QMJHL Faces Russia Tonight

The 2015 CHL Canada Russia shifts to the QMJHL tonight.

After losing 2-1 to Team OHL last night in Windsor, Russia will be looking to get their first win of the six-game series tonight in Rouyn-Noranda. The series wraps up in Halifax on Wednesday.

Russia has had some success in recent years but has struggled this season. They’ve been outscored 16-6 and only one of the first four games has been a one-goal match.

Three members of the Sea Dogs – defenseman Thomas Chabot and forwards Nathan Noel and Mathieu Joseph – are on Team QMJHL’s roster. Noel and Joseph were both late additions to the team. Also, former Dogs d-man Olivier LeBlanc of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles is on the squad.

All-time at this event, the QMJHL is 13-8-3.
