FINAL: Sea Dogs 6, Screaming Eagles 2
SYDNEY, NS – The Saint John Sea Dogs redeemed themselves at Centre 200 on Friday night.
After suffering a heartbreaking and brutal 2-1 loss in Cape Breton earlier this season, the Sea Dogs erased those bad memories with a 6-2 victory over the Screaming Eagles Friday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.
Zach Phillips and Stanislav Galiev both had two goals while Nathan Beaulieu and Michael Kirkpatrick added singles. Frederic Piche played well in the Sea Dogs crease, making some big saves in the game. He stopped 22 pucks in the win.
Saint John got off to a bit of a slow start, being outshot 11-7. But the Sea Dogs slowly got momentum going in their direction with a fairly dominant second period.
Cape Breton had goals from Spencer Metcalfe and Cory MacIntosh. Goaltender Andrew Hayes was okay, allowing six goals on 30 shots.
FIRST PERIOD
Jonathan Huberdeau had the first good chance in the game but was stopped by Eagles goaltender Andrew Hayes in close. The rebound went to Zach Phillips who had a partial open cage but had the puck tipped wide of the goal.
Cape Breton had a great chance a few minutes. Pier-Antoine Dion fed Taylor MacDougall from behind the net. MacDougall was able to get a couple of solid shots off on the crease area but was denied each time by Sea Dogs ‘tender Frederic Piche.
Steven Anthony had a great chance moments later on a partial break but was stopped by Hayes.
Nathan Beaulieu made it a 1-0 game at 11:49. Beaulieu had the puck at the line and walked down low with it. He fired a wrist shot from along the boards that beat Hayes up high to give Saint John the lead.
Seconds later at 12:19, Stanislav Galiev capitalized on an Eagles turnover in the offensive zone and ripped a shot past Hayes to give the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead.
Guillaume Cloutier was called for hooking at 15:19 but the Sea Dogs would produce a solid penalty kill and keep their two goal lead.
The Eagles got on the board at 18:15. After Piche robbed Alexandre Carrier in front, the puck went back to the line for Spencer Metcalfe. The Eagles tough guy fired a point shot that went by everyone to make it a 2-1 game.
Shots in the opening frame were 11-7
SECOND PERIOD
Stanislav Galiev had a decent chance off a faceoff early on in the second period but ripped the puck off the head of Hayes. A few seconds later, Galiev fed Michael Kirkpatrick who scored at 1:05 to give Saint John their two-goal lead back.
Kirkpatrick then had another good chance latter on. The North Sydney native crossed the line and sent a shot on goal that Hayes was able to stop it. The rebound sat in the crease with Ryan Tesink there to jam it in but he was tied up by an Eagles defenseman and couldn’t get wood on it.
Olivier Jodoin then had a good chance on a partial break but couldn’t get a shot on goal.
Another Cape Breton turnover led to another Saint John goal at 8:15. In the Sea Dogs’ offensive zone, Huberdeau found the disc and found Zach Phillips who beat Hayes shortside to make it a 4-1 game.
Mike Thomas headed to the penalty box at 11:27, but it was the Sea Dogs with the best scoring chance. Saint John had a three-on-one play but couldn’t score, a play the featured Huberdeau had three or four chances in front but couldn’t beat Hayes.
Late in the period, MacDougall was once again robbed by Piche in close.
The Sea Dogs had a late power play but could not connect on it.
Shots in the middle session were 14-2 Saint John.
THIRD PERIOD
At 4:58 on a power play, Huberdeau sent a terrific cross crease feed to Phillips at the other side. The Fredericton native had a wide open cage to make it a 5-1 Sea Dogs lead.
Galiev was called for interference at 6:36. Stephen Woodworth had the best chance down low on the man advantage but could not beat Piche in the Sea Dogs’ crease. Not long after the penalty expired, Dion had a partial break after getting around a Saint John defenseman but was denied by the leg of Piche.
Soon after that, Kirkpatrick found the puck at the blue line and broke in on a breakaway but had it roll off his stick before he could get a good shot off.
Cape Breton made it a three goal game at 11:18. Cory MacIntosh entered the Sea Dogs zone with some speed and cut into the crease. He made a move to his forehand and beat Piche, making it a 5-2 game.
The rough stuff then picked up at 11:39. Gabriel Bourret and MacIntosh dropped the gloves in a short tilt that saw the Eagle land the better of the punches. Three seconds later, a heavyweight tilt involving Mike Thomas and Spencer Metcalfe took place at center ice. Both players got some good shots in before being broken up by the officials.
Logan Shaw had the final decent scoring chance for the Eagles as he hit the post late in the game.
At 17:32, Galiev stood in the corner behind the goal line and fired a shot on net. The shot somehow snuck by the leg of Hayes to give Saint John a 6-2 lead and an ultimate win.
Shots in the third stanza were 11-9 Cape Breton.
Saint John went one-for-two on the power play while Cape Breton went zero-for-three.

Defenseman Simon Despres is away with Team Canada, taking care of business and stuff. Tomas Jurco was also away with Team Slovakia who began the second part of their training camp earlier this week.

This was game No. 34 of the 2010-11 season for the Sea Dogs, meaning the first-half of the year is officially over… the game was broadcast on Eastlink cable in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island… the Eagles wore their black, white, and grey third jerseys… tomorrow will be the last game prior to the 10-day holiday break for both clubs… as expected, Eagles leading scorer Viktor Hertzberg missed the game due to a concussion… with his 15th goal of the season, Stanislav Galiev tied his goal total from his rookie season… Mike Thomas dropped the gloves for only the second time this year… Zach Phillips now leads the team in goals with 25 on the year... According to News 88.9’s Tim Roszell, Stanislav Galiev expects to find out Sunday if he will play for Russia at the World Junior Hockey Championships this year.
