SAINT JOHN - The "real" preseason begins on Wednesday for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
After going 0-3 at last weekend's Rookie Challenge in Moncton, the Sea Dogs, now joined by their returning veteran players, will look for their first exhibition win of the year when they host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan at 7 p.m.
The Sea Dogs kicked off training camp on Tuesday with a couple of scrimmages at Harbour Station.
In the morning game, Team Thomas defeated Team Huberdeau 3-2. Ben Reid scored a pair of goals while Isiah Campbell, Cole Reginato and Radim Salda added singles.
In the afternoon game, a four-goal first period led Team Thomas to a 6-1 win. Reid had a hat trick while singles came from Campbell, Alexandre Lafreniere, Luke Wilson and Nicholas Cardone.
All four goaltenders in camp played equal time.
Campbell led Saint John in scoring at the Rookie Challenge, registering a goal and four points. Reid had two goals while Tristan Mercure and Ian Smallwood each had two assists.
With just 41 players in camp, there should be some regulars playing for Saint John on Wednesday. The camp roster includes the newly acquired William Poirier and Anthony Boucher, both of whom were on the ice Tuesday afternoon at Harbour Station.
Import pick Ostap Safin has not joined the team yet due to his participation in the Five Nations Tournament. Returnee Matt Green was also not on the ice on Tuesday due to injury.
Following Wednesday's game, the Sea Dogs will take on the Titan in Bathurst on Friday. Saint John will then host the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday afternoon at the qplex.
