RECAP: Sea Dogs lose 7-2

FINAL: Drummondville 7, Saint John 2
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs were able to keep the score somewhat close but could not defeat Joe Veleno and the powerful Drummondville Voltigeurs on Friday night at Harbour Station.

The Voltigeurs scored three times in both the the second and third periods en route to a 7-2 victory over the Sea Dogs. Saint John's franchise record losing streak has now hit 15 games.

The Sea Dogs managed to keep the score close for until the Volts belw it open in the third. Even though the score was close at times, the Voltigeurs controlled the play for much of the game. The Volts outshot the Dogs 25-7 in the second period alone and 47-25 overall.

Veleno, the former Sea Dogs captain, made his first appearance at Harbour Station since last year's blockbuster trade. The Detroit Red Wings prospect had two goals (he was credited with the second one after the game) but was fairly quiet otherwise.

Cedric Desruisseaux and Xavier Simoneau both scored twice for the Volts while Dawson Mercer added a single. Daniel Moody made 23 saves in the win.

Nathan Larose and Brady Burns scored for Saint John. Mikhail Denisov was pretty good (other than the sixth goal), making 40 saves in his Sea Dogs debut.

The Voltigeurs opened the scoring with 5:20 remaining in the first period. Felix Lauzon crept in towards the goal and fired a perfect pass to Desruisseaux who had a wide open net to give Drummondville a 1-0 advantage.

Larose's first of the season tied the game at 1-1 at 16:44. The defenseman got the puck at the circle and fired a shot past Moody.

1:45 in to the second, Desruisseaux grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and sped past the Saint John defense, firing a shot from the top of the slot past the glove of Denisov to give the Volts a 2-1 advantage.

Drummondville took a 3-1 lead at 8:36 of the second. Simoneau finished off a nice passing play, firing a quick shot past Denisov before the Sea Dogs netminder could slide over.

Saint John got back within one at 12:03. After some sloppy defensive zone play by the Volts led to a turnover, Jeremie Poirier eventually got the puck and pinched in to the circle where he fired a cross ice pass to Burns. The rookie beat an outstretched Moody, making it 3-2.

With 5:36 remaining in the frame, Drummondville scored again. Following some bounces in the crease, the puck came loose to Simoneau at the side of the net who scored to make it 4-2. Then with 2:31 remaining, the Volts scored again but the goal was called back due to an offside.

Veleno scored at 9:54 of the third period to put the Voltigeurs up 5-2. Nicolas Beaudin fired a pass from the slot to Veleno in the circle who beat Denisov with a wrist shot.

The Volts made it 6-2 with a shorthanded goal at 14:00. Denisov was caught way out of his net but managed to make it back in time to have Mercer get a shot through the five-hole of the Dogs netminder. Then at 15:20, Veleno scored his second to make it 7-2.

LINEUP
SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without goaltender Alex D'Orio (healthy); forwards Luke Wilson (healthy), Christian Clark (healthy) and Aiden MacIntosh (healthy); along with defenseman Brendan Sibley (injured).

NOTES: The Volts let Joe Veleno have a solo lap around the ice to start warmup... a Veleno video tribute was played during the first league timeout in the first period... the healthy scratching of Alex D'Orio is definitely going to kickstart some trade rumours - which have been fairly quiet... the Sea Dogs wore their black third jerseys... Dawson Stairs picked up his first career QMJHL point on Nathan Larose's goal... this was the third time this season that Mikhail Denisov has appeared in a game against the Voltigeurs... Drummondville rested their No. 1 goaltender, Olivier Rodrigue, with games against Moncton and Halifax still to come on this three-in-three road trip.

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs host the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
